Being a teenager sucks, by definition ... that is the point. Surviving is the whole point - whatever else you face in life, you know it's never going to be as bad as being a teenager, because you are now armed against it, by experience, by practice, and effort, to face whatever assails you. A teenager's trials are not necessarily the most dangerous ones they will face in their lives (at least one certainly hopes not), but what makes them harsh is the simple fact the teen does NOT have the tools to face them properly.
A LGBT teen in modern society is under even more pressure ... in addition to all the weight dropped on every other teen, he/she has to deal with their mindset and body not being in sync. Body-conciousness issues, already crippling, get torqued to the snapping point and beyond, and social pressures to conform conflicting with ones own mental self-image ... the shocking thing isn't that 40%+ will attempt suicide at some point, it's that the number isn't much higher.
Stapling someone into the frame of your own expectations isn't helping them ... condemning without attempting to comprehend is the real killer, here.
