A couple of months ago I noticed a massive uptick in the number of hits on my stories and couldn't figure out why, since I hadn't written anything for ages. It was only later that I found that I had just been included in the "12 Random Authors" list at the time so I can confirm that it really works.

One strange thing was that while I got literally hundreds of extra hits I didn't get a single additional comment or "thumbs up". I don't know what that signifies. Perhaps people just dip in and decide they don't like the story and move on.

I have just noticed that I am once again on the list of "Random Authors" so will be interested to see if I have the same experience. Do not misunderstand me....I am very pleased to have the exposure, which prevents me from being totally forgotten as an author until such time as I can regain some inspiration and resume meaningfull writing. I just find the responses a little strange.

I wonder if others have had the same experience or have had numerous comments and "thumbs ups".

Random authors is different every single time the site is loaded. Because of caching, sometimes the same page is loaded for thousands of unlogged in visitors. Unlogged in visitors usually don't leave comments because they have to use one of the guest logins to do it.

Use to be.
That's how I discovered some the hidden gems here, and their authors.
Which then led me to more stories by following links.

Random Solo is back

Some internal changes broke the old Random Solo feature but I finally got around to fixing it last night. We've been slowly cleaning things up so the solos meet the same definition as the front page ones. Some of the really old solos are not marked and when I have a bit of time, I'm finding those and marking them so they will show up, too.

For the explanation about the usual participants in the Random Authors phenomenon. Now I understand why there were few or no comments or "thumbs ups". I received about 150 extra hits on my old stories, so the system does work.
