I tried to cut and paste the link to the story here but it did not work. The title goes something like "Gym's transgender policy stirs debate".

This is going to make some of you mad as hell, but this needs to be said. If you are going to start dressing as a woman in public then you need to make some effort. Find the article and listen to it. You can do that much.

Separate changing rooms…

… for those who do not wish to risk to company of those who might not be 'the right sort' of woman?

And another gym...

For those who don't want to be in the same building as those bigots :-)
I don't understand why people there make so much fuss over this and make it such a bjg issue? What is their problem? I once happened to go into ladies toilet. I don't think I could pass without extensive use kf hollywood magic, but that time I was dressed in suit and tie. And was quite drunk. And toilets were not clearly marked.
It happened in wild Russia. You hear and read stories about our laws regarding gay propaganda.
But.
That time. There were no screams. No one said a word to me. One of the girls in there gave me brief strange look. That caused me to study markings on the and around the doors. But that's all. I was embrassed a bit about not recognizing marking for ladies for what they were. But basically - no one cared. At least not cared enough to say something.
So, once again, what is the problem?

Good morning Gwen

I don't see the controversy (if we're talking about the same incident). A person who self-identifies as a woman, used the women's changing room. A genetic woman took exception, contacted local management, who let her know that what had happened was within their policy guidelines. Genetic woman decides to trash talk about the self-identified woman, behind her back, calling her a pervert and pushes the complaint up to Fitness Planet's corporate offices. Again the policy is explained.

Genetic woman keeps trash talking about the other person calling them a pervert and the like, and the local management steps in and revokes her membership for violation of the "no judgement" policy.

Where's the problem?

I agree!

sentiment that some dont do enough to look like a woman. some of us just DONT, but i know a lot of CIS women who dont either. the issue is in the perception of this other member. while the trans woman stated she understood why she thought she looked like a man, name one of us who DOESNT feel we dont pass well? like most women we feel we look worse than we do, its a self image issue most people have (unless you are a narcissist :D ) , so while the trans woman took no offense, at least the way this article reads, it doesnt mean the CIS womans actions were not offensive. complaining to the management several times, and told it was in their policies (her fault for not reading them). but to cause issues with the other members was where she went too far.

now, does anyone here belong to PF? do they have privacy areas for changing? do they have mens, womens and a family area as some gyms do?

The banned woman

Her suggestion?

"Cormier told the paper she feels the gym could provide a third set of changing stalls for transgendered people."

Everyone's blue. Dark blues can ride at the back of the bus.

FOAD.

Well she is not unconditionally passable by a long shot

But she is hardly the worst I've ever seen. The way the complainer described it you would think the T-woman came in with a 5 day growth of facial hair, hairy legs, sat down and started scratching their genitalia. *rolls eyes*.

It is unfortunate that hormones will never change the bone structure of an M->F (though it will to a certain extent for the face of an F->M) or change our voices for us either.

She is great in that she is not standing in the shadows over the whole controversy.

OTOH

I doubt such a complaint would've happened in Russia ^_^.

Seriously though, like it or not we run the spectrum from the nigh impossible to spot (me) to someone who will never pass without a million dollars of plastic surgery ( or event then.) We cannot all look like Laverne Cox or Andreja Pejic.

Yep! Not in Russia.

Quite seriously. I happened once to visit ladies bathroom. I was quite drunk, ladies was not marked clearly. There was one brief strange look at me from one girl. But no screams, no calls for management or police.

That's why, if I were in that situation...

...I don't think I would have bothered using the locker room at all, even to store my purse and nothing more. Even on a good day when nobody reads me, there's always the possibility that someone will. It's not fair, but I'd rather just avoid trouble altogether than risk that sort of reaction.

I had the same experience

When I first came out, I was attending a Gym and their policy then was that I used women's locker rooms. The period is a blur to me, but I remember how supportive the Gym was. If there were complaints, I never heard them. That was 2004-5.
