We used to have an author around here that was heavily involved with Movies, and I just can't think of his/her name. I'll work on it.

Anyhow, I have been following the reviews for "50 Shades of Grey", and I think it is doing pretty good in the box office. I think a lot of the screaming about it being lewd was just media hype. I've done all most as much as our protagonists, except I don't have a helicopter or Audi r8, damn.

If you remember noted writer and mythologist, Joseph Campbell, the movie has so far followed his formula very closely. So, we've seen the low point of the plot, or death of a vision, and now the plot will build to a happy ending.

I'm not arguing the merits of the movie. If you don't think you'd like it, don't watch it. For me, being more than slightly twisted, it was a near masterpiece.

I just wish I knew how the movie did in the box office in comparison to other movies? This from a purely technical point of view of course.

Website for Box Office Numbers

Pesonally, I've no expertise at all, Lincoln is the only non-documentary I've seen in a movie theater in around 30 years.

But here's a site devoted to box office receipts. It shows Fifty Shades as grossing $165 million domestically and more than half a billion worldwide since it came out in mid-February. (It's been out 54 days as of April 7.)

It led the nation with $85 million gross in its first weekend, the highest figure during February and second highest (to American Sniper) for an opening weekend January to March.

As major films go, however, the fact that it still hasn't doubled its domestic return since the opening weekend seems to be a little unusual. (There may be an additional factor in the figures here; the film opened during the three-day Presidents Day weekend, extending weekend sales by an extra day.)

From what I understand it's the highest grossing film of 2015 so far although once Age of Ultron comes out in a few weeks it will almost certainly drop to number 2. It's also the highest grossing film ever directed by a female and Universal's most successful R rated film ever.
