Ignorance

Frank's picture

Knows no geographical boundaries sadly.

Actually

While not boundaries you'd see on a map, ignorance varies on geographic locations even in the most tolerant areas you will have ignorant regions, true, however the reverse is ALSO true

It's Massachusetts too !

It's not just Texas Gwen, A very good friend of mine stated the same thing to me last week.
And he's aware of my 'tolerance' but not true feelings on the matter. I asked if he felt better having an 8 yr old boy enter a men's room
with a pediphile rapist inside? His answer, " That's different". Go figure.

The people who started all this

must be laughing their stupid heads off as it simply polarises people. It also probably means it'll be even longer before I consider visiting the US.

*sigh*

*sigh*

The United States is 3,531,905 square miles. The United Kingdom is 94,058 square miles. Texas alone is 268,820 square miles. The population of the UK in 2015 was 64 million, the US was 320 million. Texas alone is estimated at somewhere close to 26 million people.

Thinking that if someone is abused in Texas will cause someone to be abused in, say, Maine, is just plain silly. I mean, from Houston to El Paso is _twice_ the distance between Edinburgh and London. From Denton, the town where this idiot sheriff is, to Houston, is over 250 miles. (Denton is in a growing, but still very back-woods rural mindset area north of Dallas/Fort Worth )

If you want to visit the US, there are lots of areas to go to other than Texas, and if you wanted to visit Texas, you could stay a two day drive away from that area without a struggle. Getting upset about this would be like saying you weren't going to visit France because terrorists shot up an entertainment facility - and it could happen to YOU.

If you don't want to visit the US? You don't have to make up reasons for it. Just don't go. Don't blame your dislike for the US on small things that happen here or there, such as a redneck being - a redneck. The people on this side of the pond certainly don't care.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

City of Denton is actually pretty progressive.

I live in Plano which is about 30 miles away. The City of Denton is a college town and is actually a pretty progressive place. They passed the first anti-fracking ordinance in the state and they are now fighting the State of Texas over it. They guy spouting off his mouth is not the Sheriff yet, he just thinks he will win because there is no Democrat running against him. He does have a Libertarian opponent who may have just gotten a boost. Texas is now a non-majority state just like Hawaii and California. No one group holds a majority of the population and it will turn blue eventually. Most of the bigger cities are majority Democratic now and the influx of people from other states will speed that up. Plano, where I live, was the first city in the state to pass an anti-discrimination ordinance but we are not the only one. We still have bigots but they are a dying breed. We don't need them to be gone, just to the point where their opinions are a small minority.

Texas was originally Democrat

Texas was originally Democrat. I remember that when I was young, the shift happened to Republican.

Corruption

My understanding is that several democratic state officials were caught with their hands in the cookie jar which lead to the state swinging to the republicans. I'm sure there are other factors such a Nixon's southern strategy to attract southern people angry with democrats about civil rights to the republican party. Today the state republicans are extremely well funded by oil & gas and other entrenched business interests. Combined with voter suppression laws and actions, low urban and suburban voter turn out, and pandering to social/religious conservative groups, the Republicans (not the moderate ones) have a firm hold on the state.

Any moderate

With half a brain will vote democrat this time around, if only to ensure that hateful idiot doesn't become president, some of his "policies" are straight up unconstitutional and the rest are terrifying

And this is different from

And this is different from the last four presidents in WHAT way?

LOL. Right.

And while Hillary would have DIFFERENT illegal policies, they'd still be illegal too! Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter. That's why I'm neither and won't vote for either.

The difference is that Trump

The difference is that Trump's policies are rooted in racism, Bible thumping and he is preying on fear and misplaced pride, there is no reasoning with Trump, he condoned people beating up those who protest and oppose his campaign! Cut throat politics is one thing, but any other person would be appalled (or pretend to be) if their supporters turned violent like that, he doesn't care, Trump is a true extremist, and the last thing this country needs, his "wall" will give money to the cartels and jack up the price of half our food stuffs, other policies that violate freedom of religion, which is protected by the bill of rights, it's a matter (as is always the case) of voting for the lesser of 2 evils, if only to prevent the presidency of the other, with gun control, the only thing that would be effected is the difficulty of purchasing new guns, and even that would be fought very hard by the NRA, so I am not worried there, at least Hillary's policies won't potentially start a war. Who are you less afraid of?

Actually?

Trump. BECAUSE he's so obviously, blatantly, and flagrantly bad. People are less likely to protest against the wrong Hillary does because it's not as obvious, and it's the insidious poison that worries me more. If Trump actually won we might actually see a second revolution, something I'd welcome at this point, our government no longer even attempts to represent us, it's time to make a new one again.

Greater Danger

I'm more afraid of the damage he'd cause in a year (let alone 4), yes 99.9% of politicians are corrupt, yes Hillary would be more subtle about it, but there is a greater danger with Trump, one that isn't just political, if he wins the bigots will have additional reasoning to self justify their actions, after all if the POTUS/recent POTUS supports your actions then they have nationalist (modern definition of Patriot) backing, THAT is what I am most afraid of, the people who think they have the right to tell others how to live their lives more or less getting that right confirmed by the President. The biggest power of the president isn't anything political, it never has been, but the influence on public opinion, both foreign and domestic as it relates to the nation, and in the hands of an extremist, in any country mind you that is FAR more powerful than any law or executive action.

As for representation, it isn't perfect, no system ever is, has been, or will be, we are far too populous (and busy) as a society for direct democracy on every single decision to work, especially when the opinions of the public vary so wildly, do politicians need such big salaries? probably not. Should there be more oversight on three letter agencies and politicians themselves? Definitely. Is it possible to make everyone happy? Only in dreams or with LOTS of drugs. But look at the recent supreme court ruling on Gay Marriage and tell me they aren't trying, and in the end that's all any government ever can do, is try to do what's best for the people. They wont always succeed, and when they do, over time many of the solutions of the past present unforeseen problems in the future, they are only human. There has been and never will be a perfect government but for its faults, the one we have isn't that bad, okay there's corporate lobbyists that mess up a ton of stuff but all in all, we get more representation than most countries.
