This showed up on my wife's Facebook page. She asked my opinion of it and I looked it over and thought, "What would the gang at BCTS think?"

Transgender in Women's Bathroom (Social Experiment)

Let me know if you feel this was a fair experiment or does this guy have an agenda and is he trying to appear sympathetic while joining the anti trans bathroom argument?

I cannot say

Without violating rule #1 what I think of him,,,

I think he was personification of "a guy in a dress" I don't believe he had a real "trans" friend and would imagine if he did, that friend would have set him straight and not let this "experiment" happen.

Grrr

It seemed more like a lark than an experiment to me. Looks like he put all of 5 minutes preparation into this presentation. He didn't do anything that could lead anyone to believe he was anywhere on the transgender spectrum! It could have been total ignorance but based on what I saw and heard it was more like total arrogance - but either way I saw it as along the lines of being at best a farce and at worst definitively anti-trans.

Truly a sophomoric or frat-boy escapade to make fun of people while pretending to show support. Evidently he didn't have the courage to take the effort to create a true representation, I wonder why he didn't enlist his "trans friend" to assist him with this experiment.

Homonyms, synonyms, heterographs, contractions, slang, colloquialisms, clichés, spoonerisms, and plain old misspellings are the bane of writers, but the art and magic of the story is in the telling not in the spelling.

First of all, I disagree with

First of all, I disagree with both his trans friend and doctor friend. Gender and sex are not the same thing. DNA defines your birth sex, what is between your legs. DNA, not the XX/XY/etc., may define your gender, we don't know enough to answer that, but that is what is in your head.

As for the guy, I look more feminine and passable everyday, than he did. A good experiment might be to have his trans friend use the bathroom, or any other TG.

The guy wouldn't know trans if it jumped up and bit him

Has nothing to do with any type of clinical research I have ever read or worked with. What did he prove? He's a jerk? He knows so little about trans it makes him an authority? I've been studying trans far longer than he's been alive and the only definitive about trans is each one is a unique individual. Just like every single person society calls normal.

Which is the most disgusting part of trans. Society tries to peg them all as definitive and fit inside a definite rules box. Damn I hate people who want to classify trans like they were printed off an assembly line. No other class of people has to put up with this except trans. No other class of people has to perform a dog and pony show inside a circus to get approval to add or remove pieces to sculpt their body to fit their mind.

Percentage wise, as 1% of the population, we lose a larger percentage to suicide and murder than any other class of people. Whether that still holds true or not I'm not sure but it was over thirty years back. With idiots like that guy in the video pulling stunts like he did, how many more people now hate what they perceive as a predator calling himself trans? Karma would be him having to live the rest of his life as trans.

Perfect example of the south end of a north bound donkey!

I'm going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt...

...and assume that his unpassability was precisely the point he was trying to make. There are transwomen who are masculine-looking and have deep voices. He doesn't say outright that such people shouldn't be in the restroom of the gender with which they identify, but he does show that cis women are uncomfortable with an unpassable transwoman being among them, not those who can blend in easily.

That's why, at least in the early years of my transition, I was very reluctant to use the women's restroom, because I knew the other women would immediately become hostile because of my appearance. As far as they were concerned, I was still a guy--and therefore a threat.

Of course, the more masculine-looking transwomen have as much right as any women to be in the restroom in which they're most comfortable, but it's always going to be much harder for them to gain acceptance.

At least he shaved his beard.

At least he shaved his beard. That was pretty bad. If he tried that in Provincetown, Mass. he'd still have trouble.
I don't think he had a trans friend who helped with the way he was dressed. He looked like a man in a dress.

What he needs is...

Hypatia Littlewings's picture

... to have a woman, trans or other wise help him to appear as woman, since his own effort is not at all serious enough. Or at least he needs to approach the attempt as if he is actually trying not to be noticed. His attempt is to deliberately stick out and see if others notice. I suppose that, that is at least partially the point, to be noticeable, but he has the level all wrong. Obviously he does not want to be a perfect "Hollywood magic" level of transformed into a woman, or there is no experiment, he needs to look like he is seriously trying though, yet still be noticeable enough to be picked out as possible trans. This does become a very strange fine line to deliberate tread.

Among other things, That wig is horrid, It practically screams "costume". It is not on right, and it is not his color which makes his non-fem eyebrows, and the wigs bad fit stand out worse. A trans-woman might not pass, but, she wont "not pass" in this sloppy manner. (Except maybe an inexperienced, rather young kid with no money, and "borrowed" stuff.) I think he might actually pass better with freaky colored cosplay wig, it would distract from the other issues.

Notice that it is labeled, "Social Experiment - Prank - Pranks - Political Experiment - Politics", he is approaching it as a prank.

He made no attempt to appear as a genuine woman. Lousy wig, no make-up, minimal feminine dress, no voice modification (not pitch, but feminine phrasing). Of course he scared the women using the restroom and all he did was reinforce all the prejudices which led to these stupid laws in the first place.

I just saw this video this morning,

Teresa L.'s picture

posted on a city group for where i live. someone using it as "proof" that women would be uncomfortable. several issues here.

1. we do NOT know how much of this is staged.
2. i doubt the call he made was a real trans (unless it was one of the drag queens who do the mocking women type of drag) the claim it was "ok" to keep their voice is a completely personal choice, or lack of if they cant do anything for it. i am lucky enough my voice isnt so deep, i even get confused with a woman when i am NOT trying to change it, lol. before i transitioned that is.
3. his lack of makeup shows it wasnt a real trans. especially for a recently started transition, we usually tend to do makeup, not great without help (i can attest to that unfortunately, but i am much better now), i havent seen anyone go out with "5 oclock shadow" usually caked on foundation, concealer etc is used, not just plain, heck he didnt even put on lippy, what was he thinking!!!
4. choice of color hair, etc was not great, but for someone just starting, and having minimal to no help (even though supposedly he did) i can see it, otherwise, no.
5. as others have state, i too would be uncomfortable with him in the restroom, either one, his actions were just too creepy, walk, etc nothing about him said woman other than the clothes, his stance at his "reveal" just made me cringe and shudder.

and i think there are other things, but basically, i know cis woman who are more masculine than probably 90% of the trans i have met, seen pics of, maybe higher. part of the problem is the stereotypical view of a woman.

This is getting so far out of hand - This election is a total outrageous bullshit at its highest ever - Right now I don't there is anyone I really want to vote for. Now Cruz's statement is so far out of left field its a total joke. Now this partition against Target's policy is nothing but a racist bullshit by churches of the radical right and not a one of them know anything about what there doing but causing a bunch of problems in the transgendered world that could lead to a bunch of suicides on there hands and I hope Not!

There's always the Green Party...

Dr. Jill Stein is presently still far and away leading in our primary. We haven't had our national convention yet, which is where the actual winner who will be our candidate in the general election will be decided. And yes, in the interest of full disclosure I am an active member of this political party, so please by all means take this comment with a heavy grain of salt and do your own research into our positions and actions. I'll also be perfectly honest and admit our chances of winning are almost none... but if you didn't really want to vote for anyone from the two parties anyways, why not vote for someone you actually do believe in, even if their chance of winning is extremely low?

Of course, as another alternative, though I think they no longer have enough states to have even the remote chance the Greens do, is the Libertarian Party.

I'm not going to engage in a political argument here, just calling attention to the existence of an alternative you may not have even realized existed. The national debates are organized by the Democrats and Republicans, alternatives are kept from participating through what ought to be highly illegal means, they certainly aren't ethical.

As to the original topic, I completely agree with everyone else who has commented here. This dude made no attempt to seriously pass as a woman, trans or otherwise. I find the claim of a "trans friend" dubious at best.

Abigail Drew.

I have to agree with the

I have to agree with the majority here, he made no attempt to 'pass' as a woman but rather appeared as a man in a dress. I couldn't tell from that video whether he has an agenda or is just ignorant, but I don't think this video really helps get justice for the trans people of the world.

Too much fail for a single video...

1. I agree that he had done nothing to try to present as female. At all. 5$ wig just helps to enforce that it is some kind of prank.
2. Obviously bathroom dialogues were recorded in a studio as any bathroom provides a very specific echo that is virtually impossible to remove from the recording. And compact microphones that are available to general public and that are small enough to be concealed on a person provide such a crappy sound... So... That sound was recorded not in any of the bathrooms and not onto a compact mike/recorder.
3. Once again, even I look more like a woman with 3 day beard and in my jeans and T.
4. I refuse to believe that a sane TG person approved of that experiment... I can't persuade myself that there were actual TG people involved in that video.
5. In the time between woman's entry into the bathroom and "experimenter's" entry any real woman would have being safely locked in the cubicle and would have being unavailable to engage "experimenter" in the dialogue about his gender.

Very strange experiment...

But...
1. He violated commandment #1 of bathroom usage: "thou shalt not go into bathroom if you have nothing to do there".
2. Sadly, dialogs were staged and recorded separately, probably in a nice soundbooth in some studio. Just compare sound quality between in-bathroom dialogue and preparation scenes. Bathrooms are also notorious for their ceramic tile interriors which produce very specific echo. There are some echo suppressing algorithms but they are not this good to filter all of the tile echo with single microphone.
3. I can't say for US or UK, but here in Russia women are much more interested in bathroom cleanliness than in who else is in there. I've seen enough examples when male janitor goes into women's bathroom and is basically ignored: he provides clean environment which is much more important than any hangups about proper genders to be in the bathroom. And female janitor in man's bathroom is so ordinary that men continue to use urinals while female janitor cleans floor around their feet...

And once again. It needs to be passed as a law everywhere: If while using a public bathroom you are interested in scrutinizing and analyzing your fellow bathroom goers you should be banned from the use of the public bathrooms.
