I have been accepted to the course. :)

Good morning,

We are pleased to let you know that you have been accepted onto the Writing 101 course at UBC, which begins on January 10, 2017. Congratulations! If you accept your place on the course PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL BY WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 7th. If you are no longer able to participate, please let us know and we can offer your place to someone on the waitlist.

The first class on January 10th will be a chance to meet fellow students, staff and volunteers, learn more about the Programme and what will happen throughout the course, get used to our classroom while having a short class, receive school materials and supplies, and get familiar with some useful campus locations through a short campus tour.

The evening will begin at 5.30p.m in the new Student Union Building (called “The Nest”), where you will receive a meal card to use at one of the 9 food vendors. We will meet in the large open area on the basement level. There is currently a lot of construction outside the building, so look for the yellow “Humanities 101” direction signs to help guide you. On the attached grid map you can see the Nest in section D4, which is directly opposite the “Trolley bus loop.” If you arrive at UBC on a trolley bus, the trolley bus loop is where you should get off. If you are taking a diesel bus, like the 99 b-line, you will get off at “UBC transit exchange” in section D5 of the map.

As a group we will leave The Nest and walk over to our classroom (Buchanan D room 204), where more information about the Programme will be given, as well as stationary, binders and school materials required for the course. Writing Coordinator Maureen Phillips will give a class on journal writing. To end the evening we will take a short tour of the campus, pointing out some of the key places and facilities that are available to you as UBC students, including where to collect your UBC cards. The next Writing 101 class will take place on Tuesday January 17, in Buchanan D room 204.

To get to UBC by bus, you can take the #4 trolley bus which goes through the Downtown Eastside along Powell St, and all the way to UBC (it takes about 50 minutes); the #14 goes through Downtown; and the 99 B-Line goes along Broadway all the way to UBC – it’s an express bus and only stops at some major intersections (Commercial, Main, Cambie, Granville); as well, the #25, #33, #41, #44, #49 #84, #258 & #480 will all take you to UBC.

We look forward to seeing you, and beginning a wonderful semester on January 10th. Remember, please reply to this email by December 7th to confirm your place.

Very best,
Humanities 101 Community Programme
Dr. Margot Leigh Butler, Academic Director
Paul Woodhouse, Programme Coordinator
Maureen Phillips, Writing Coordinator

Don't

expect to much, it may help you, it may not. Often these courses teach writing as a paint by numbers exercise which of course it isn't (the same applies to how many 'humanities' subjects are taught), they don't always encourage thinking outside of the box. Learn sentence construction, paragraph rules, correct use of punctuation and try not to get too disheartened by the feedback of the teaching staff. The old adage 'those than can do, those that can't teach' is never truer than with the arts.

Good luck!

oh yeah, this course

covers each type of writing over a day.

so the first day on Jan 10 they do a bit on writing a journal.
one day is poetry.
one day is new media ( online stuff )
one day on script writing

total of 12 weeks / days since it is only 1 day a week for 2 hours.

after completing the 101 students become eligible for the 201 course, which lets them focus more on where their interest is.

I'm looking at using this course as a refresher in grammar and sentence structure more than anything else. 12 sessions isn't going to be a huge amount of time.

Stupidity is a capital offense. A summary not indictable.
