Why does everything always happen at the same time? I've had this cold for well over a week now, and it's so bad I can cough in my sleep, often without waking. It's also worked it's way down into my chest, and up into my sinuses...

So the bad weather happens just about now as well, and to top it all I just accidentally trashed one of my servers... twice.

Meh. It looks as though Somewhere Else Entirely will be delayed for a short while, until my brain finds it's way home again. I had written about 4,300 words of the next chapter, and we've gotten to a semi-formal lunch with the Guildsmen I have to really pick my way through... so I won't be tackling that until my head is clear.

There's a clear plan ahead for the next three or so chapters, and then Garia's circumstances will change completely as they begin their journey north. Really, I can't wait until I can begin to write that but there's a certain amount of essential setting up to do before that point is reached, unfortunately.

In the meantime, I have to concentrate on my room full of creaking computers. To whit: over the current month, my region will be changing from Analog TV completely to Digital, which requires two retunings. I have a media server full of TV cards, and I have another card ready for the switchover, which is when we'll be able to get and record HD properly. Guess which server I trashed?

In addition, my Linux supplier (Mandriva) has gone bust and sold out to the Russians, so I have decided to migrate to Debian instead. It's a bit like moving from the UK to the US: the language sounds the same, and most things are familiar, and yet there are things that need a different way of looking at. So, although I don't want to, especially in my current physical circumstances, I have to pay some attention to the boxes in the cupboard. As I said, meh.

Ah, well. Where would we be without a little Real Life? (Don't answer that!)

Dim problem bach. xxx

Take a break, clear your head, we can wait.
Colds come to us all, especially in this damp, cold, humid, saturated, rain cursed island. It's what makes the damned place so green.
Sometimes I wish I was 'somewhere else entirely' then, when I'm savouring the freedom to go as I wish to go, and do as I wish to do in some exotic club in some exotic street, I realise I should count my blessings. At least we are fairly free to be who we are and go as we are; not as some other dictatorial governments decree.

As to your computer problems, I simply keep my computer stuff to a minimum. Somewhere to store my stories, somewhere to surf the net and somewhere to skype my friends.

Looking forward to the next chapter of SEE, but I can wait. Get better soon. Colds are miserable.

Keep warm and look after yourself.

Writing and computer tricks

Usually my problems with writing is a lack of motivation to do so. I have two ongoing stories posted here, one that is posted but is currently going through a rewrite. Then there are others that have absolutely nothing to do with the content of this site... I just can't seem to get my rear end in gear to work on any of them... Having been sick and trying to write often produces the same results...

In regards to your server, I recently switched to CentOS from using a Mac OS 10.6 client installation (Which before that was a Ubuntu 10.04LTS server install.) Usually when I muck up a computer, I end up taking three down at once. I've spent many a night starting over from scratch and reconfiguring a system from install to a production state. I look at events like this as learning experiences.

One of the dumbest things I ever did was to do a reinstall on one of the laptops right before a quarter of school started. I think all said and done, it took me about three weeks to put the system back together in a state that I could actually accomplish anything on that laptop...
