I overheard some men enjoying this rather rude joke at a party on Saturday, so as part of the language studies that my brother and I are doing, I translated it into my semi-bad Spanish:

And a bilingual English/Hindi one:

What do peas say to each other in the pod? "Mutter, mutter"

I guess it says something about me that I got that first joke without actually knowing any Norwegian/Danish (not sure which that is, but I do know a little Swedish). The second joke is I think that "mutter" is what one of the Hindi words for "mother" sounds like? If so, it's a multi-lingual pun, since "mutter" is also "mother" in German and several other Indo-European languages. :)

Norwegian...

And the Hindi for cheesy peas is mattar paneer, which should explain the Indian joke.

Um, no?

That actually made it more opaque. :)

Mattar

or mutter. Means 'peas'.

Cute

Your vocab is pretty good, it's your grammar that needs a bit of work. :)

I can just about make myself understood in France

I have a smattering of Spanish and German and four words of both Polish and Italian. When in Poland, I conversed mainly in German.

Not a lot of good, really, considering that I'm on holiday in Italy next week.

S.

If you speak French...

erin's picture

...you can actually understand a bit of Italian or Spanish once you get used to listening to it. Doesn't work as well the other way round. But between the languages you know, you should be able to find someone who understands you in Italy. English, French, German and Spanish are the most common foreign languages spoken in Italy, or for that matter, most of the rest of Europe and the Americas and a lot of Asia and Africa.

Don't Forget Romanian

& Romanish (A language in Switzerland closest to ancient Latin). I once heard Romanian spoken when I still knew Spanish and understood what was spoken. There are some advantages to being a New Yorrker.

Would you for me translate on this website?

Sure. :)

P.S. What is that? It doesn't seem to be German, Swedish, Dutch, Danish, Frisian or Afrikaans, so I figure it has to be Yiddish or Swabian. Took me a while to decipher. :) Did I get it right?

Google Translate doesn't' help a lot...

When Little Red Riding Hood was walking through the woods, to carry a basket of good little things your grandmother. Walking alone when a rabbit approached her and said, "I fear for you, Red. There is a wolf in the woods and he could try to hurt you."

"What would be best if he did not try," said Red. "Because I have a Pistoleta in the basket." She showed the rabbit and he agreed it was fine.

Then a blue bird landed on his shoulder and said, "Red, I fear for you, which causes the wolf." But she showed Pistoleta the bird, and again they agree it was a good thing to have.

Red was almost in her grandmother's house when the wolf jumped out of bushes next to her. "Oh, Red," he said, "You're a fine young man with such a great ass, pounding her I think there first."

Red pulled out his gun and pointed. "No, Mr. Wolf, now you'll eat just as the story goes."

Exactly

I see languages as being like a seed bank, each being a little 'genetic' capsule of a way of thinking. I could go into detail, such as the peculiarity of the Welsh imperative 'mood', which is actually a tense, but you get the picture.
