There have been several stories recently where the Sun has been sympathetic and the Mail vicously hostile. The reason is a simple one: the Sun has, in each case, paid for the 'exclusive' and the Mail hasn't.
That said, you are absolutely right: as soon as you read 'below the line' you meet the reader base of each paper. Now wash your hands.
