Spotted over at Crystal Hall, a link to a very well handled story about Laura Jane Grace. Laura was previously known as Tom Gabel, and remains the founder and lead singer of Against Me! - whose latest album will be called Transgender Dysphoria Blues:

I wasn't sure how Heather would take it. She said something like "That's all you were going to tell me?" She later told me she thought I was going to say I had cheated on her or wanted a divorce–which she said would have been worse for her. She told me at that moment–and kept telling me–that she wasn't going anywhere.

A really happy story to read and I hope their family enjoys much happiness. :-)

how I feel about these stories, I suppose they might help in a small way to educate but I suspect they are more likely to perpetuate the unusualness of people who change gender than make it mainstream.

Sleeveless dress and tattoos! Call me old fashioned but that is gross.

Sure it would be nice to be mainstream

But mainstream always starts with the 'unusual' until it becomes old news. Having been around a long time like you have, I have noticed a steady but forward progress at least for TS post-op women. Laura is famous so she does not have much choice though. The vast majority of us who pass pretty much fly underneath the radar unless we choose to be 'out'. We are too few to be considered commonplace but the steady aggregation of public consciousness over the last three decades, mostly due to these one-of stories be it on the telly or print.

A truly inspiring story!

I'll admit to not being much of a punk fan... But, I wish Laura and Heather all the best! And hope that someday I'll have an inspiring story of my own to tell...

She is a work in progress

Luckily for her she seems attractive right off the bat and other than voice, seems well on her way. I pray their marriage holds up.

As a singer I would be working hard on the voice thing though. It's up to her. It is very hard to alter a singing voice though.

...when things came out a while back (only so far, but still out) Mrs. D was a bit surprised at my reluctance to tell her about my gender issues. Her words? "I love you. I'm not going anywhere." I don't think I've ever cried so hard for something so good as in that one moment.
