Greetings avid authors and readers of Bigcloset,

It's been a while since I've blogged, but I'm excited to return and tell you about a new story I've posted on Wattpad.com, a wonderful site full of amazing stories which a friend of mine introduced me to. The free story I've posted is entitled Two Weeks at the Last Firefly Inn, a novella which can be classified as an indie sci-fi story but still remains, at it's heart, a piece of literary fiction. If you're looking for a refreshing change of pace from TG fiction, and if you appreciate the different and unique stories which I've written on Bigcloset over the years, then you'll love this little gem! If I've piqued your interest, here's the pitch and synopsis:

In the not too distant future, thirteen year old Alice Andrews is filled with optimism for the first time in her life because of the very real possibility of winning the annual “Firefly Inn Essay Contest,” which would give her and her family the opportunity to journey to the last place on a steadily warming Earth where the firefly still thrives. (39,000 words)

Perhaps the year 2069 wouldn’t seem so bleak for Alice if she was the second born. Then she wouldn’t have to remember the pain of losing her mother, and she certainly wouldn’t be dismayed by the prospect of her sister Kate being denied the experience of delighting in the childhood ritual of making makeshift lanterns out of fireflies and mason jars. However, the uncertain future seems more bearable when Alice goes from contest finalist to contest winner. Once she and her family arrive at the Firefly Inn in the remote countryside, she learns that giving her sister a gift in the form of what she used to take for granted, and infusing her father with joy for the first time in a long time aren’t the only perks of winning. The swarm of fireflies that set Christmas Tree Oak ablaze, reignite Alice’s sense of wonder. And when Alice meets Scott, the passionate son of nature guide Miss Ashbury, she’s powerless to resist his Aussie charm, and experiences the pangs of first love. Even though their time together by the lake shore and on Honeysuckle Trail is brief, she carries fond memories with her into her college years, which sustain her in a world that turns out to be brighter than she initially expected.
