size tag
I don't see it as a problem. Most of what I read here are multiple part posts. I cant expect the writer to know ahead of time just how many words it will be.
Lets face it, Unless the story is complete to start with they just don't know the word count. look at the bike story it has gone on for years what is the total word count, even the author do-sent know yet.If it is a single post then yes a good word count will be known. To say that a story is only 1700 or less is deceptive just as saying that a poem of 200 words is 40,000. I would rather see what the poster is estimating the total size is going to be. The administrators cant police that they don't know the final size either. The only tag I would like to see more of is final chapter.
Grins I cant keep more than a couple multi part ones straight in my head

You have it wrong

I interpret word count as the number of words in the post, not the number of words in the whole story - unless it is a solo, when the two are the same thing. As you said, it makes no sense to try and estimate the total number of words in a whole story, even if you have written the whole thing up front.

Every time you post a chapter you have to preview it before you can post it, which is a sensible thing to do in any case. I've caught many a formatting error that wasn't apparent until it was wrapped by the BCTS code.

Each time you preview, and once you post, the number of words is added to the bottom of the post. Makes it easy to go and adjust the length tag.

Alternatively, almost all text editors and word processors have a one- or two-click way to find out how many words you are posting. Simple.

I would like to offer an alternative to that word "wrong"

As far as I know there is no set rule as to how to determine nor use the length tagline when posting a story. As a reader, I agree with the sentiment that Penny Lane has proposed, i.e. that the length of EACH episode that is posted should be the 'tagline' length in the header. - BUT - I would like to put this as a REQUEST to writers. Please let us readers know how long each episode is to help us determine when it would be best to 'kick back' to read your story offerings?

Thank you all.

with love,

Once in a while I bare my soul, more often my soles bear me.

There is a way

Before I start reading any post, I start off by hitting the Page Down key and see how many "pages" it is.

That way I've got a pretty good idea of how long it will take me to read it, regardless of how it's tagged.
