Blog About:

I've just got home from the Arctic Circle, where Yorkshire is or thereabouts - actually, it's been mostly warm and sunny. We met up with Mads on Friday evening and went out for a carvery, where we remembered absent friends from last year and drank a toast to them.

On Saturday, the three of us went up to Leyburn to watch stage 1. I got burnt sitting on the window sill of the local police station for three hours, but I didn't see anything of the race because tall men stood in front of me. The same happened when we went to watch on the big screen in the market square; but I put up with it because I thought tomorrow, I'll be stood on the road side.

Big mistake. After helping the police to make things as safe as we could, when they then asked me to keep back, being a law abiding citizen I did as I was told, but I still just about see. Five minutes before the race came through, a huge man about six foot four and almost as wide stood right in front of me. I saw nothing nor could I take any photos. Wherever he is I hope someone bigger than him bullies him back, because he got quite aggressive with one chap who told him to move.

Crowd control on Holme Moss looking up towards the summit.

To cap it all, after standing and walking around for about 7 hours, my back was killing me but I struggled up to watch some of the race on the big screen tv they had near the summit of Holme Moss and the heavens opened. The one good thing, the 'Tour maker' jacket was rain proof, the rest of the outfit wasn't.

In the evening Annie and I met up with Mads again for dinner in Sheffield, Mads had fared better than I and had some reasonable photos compared to my none. Still, I had an official umbrella, they forgot to give one to Mads.

My thanks to Annie G and Mads for making it an enjoyable weekend although I didn't sleep very much and seemed to spend long hours standing, and for putting up with my puns and my IBS, which always strikes when I'm stressed.

Well, at least you were there

But I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get to see the race at all. Wondering how your experience will work itself into EAFOAB. maybe Cathy and crew will have a better time.

Great to see the sport coming

Great to see the sport coming home, yes we invented that one too. Pity the organisers couldn't have included the Cleveland Hills, but there's always next year.

The bank that goes up out of Saltburn, you don't manage that in one go unless your mam's been cooking roly poly puddings.

Ban nothing. Question everything.

I was almost tempted ...

... to ride out to the Strines road because I know it's horrible hard but at my state of none-fitness I wouldn't have made it from home even though it's less than 40 miles. Glad you had a great time even though your view was somewhat restricted.

We relied on Eurosport at home and had a great view. I went for a ride today but got home in time for the last 30kms - probably do the same tomorrow as flat stages aren't very interesting until the sprinters teams start winding up the pace to one I only achieve going downhill with a tail wind.

Looking forward to the next 3 weeks and a victory for Contador (I'm on an anybody but Sky thing right now as they haven't included either Wiggins or Swift)

I'm glad you made it Ang; what an event! It seems I struck lucky then, only got wet on the ride round Fountains Abbey Friday, along with loads of other grinning soggy cyclists. Rode out to Pool and watched, then back to H. and stood at the 450M marker for a couple of hours, the huge guy in front LEFT 5 minutes before the riders were due!
Out to Blubberhouses but they weren't letting us through and up the climb :( BUT a guy knew a back road round to the top. He warned it was "a bit lumpy", and he wasn't kidding, one stretch was 20% and Saphira's back wheel was losing traction. Good at the top though and coming down afterwards on the A59. I have about 11 midge bites swelling up on my legs.
Only shame was we didn't get to meet up, nor did I spot you on the telly up on t' Moss - can't imagine why ;)

Oh yes, not wanting to rub it in, but... scored a Skoda hat too!

All the best Ang, JJ

So sorry...

So sorry you had such lousy luck with inconsiderate blokes. Sadly, it seems they're far to common these days.

Best wishes,
Annette
