Sometimes I worry about the British...

Someone in this newsmagazine's layout department has a sick sense of humor.

Really?

Ads by facebook?

Maybe they use some piece of software that suggests ad placement and it uses the same engine as facebook which displays some creepy creepy ads. (like hey, your friend is pregnant, have you thought of becoming an ultrasound operative?)

You can't choose your relatives but you can choose your family.

Even scarier than the tagline

It says "ad placement" but wouldn't the advertising space have been sold long before the stories were added to the layout? (Not arguing with your presentation which is 100% correct regardless of which way round things are done)

Not just the British.

and not just women. Men are beaten by women too. The thing is, there is NO reason why one person should beat another physically, save for boxing or other sports like it, and even then, I question it.

As far as men beating women... or children, well those who would do so are lower than dirt and should be publicly humiliated and locked away until they learn to be civilized members of society. Disgusting.

P.S. The ad placement IS unfortunate and obviously done either my automation or an inattentive human... or one with a decidedly bent sense of humor.

One recent case

Recently, a Tory politician laid into one from another party because their website carried advertisements for dating Asian* women. He was rather red-faced when it was pointed out that the website used a system of selecting adverts on the basis of the browsing history of the person opening the page up, so the adverts were drawn from the tastes of the Tory and not chosen by his opponent.

Oopsies. It wouldn't have been so bad for him if he hadn't chosen to make a big splash in the papers about it.

*Asian, in English, is generally used to mean someone from the Indian subcontinent rather than the American meaning of oriental/Chinese/etc.

Browsing history.

There is browsing history & browsing history. I have ended up on pages I did not intend because search gave me wrong results. There are also plenty of pages out there with mixed topics, and don't forget third party cookies or links and pop ups. You can generate an awful lot of browsing history for things you never went looking for. Also have you ever searched something because you did not know what it was?
.

An funny example from a number of years back:

My nephew when he was little use to search for Nintendo game stuff, particularly "Super Mario" & "Zelda" plus others. He would get frustrated because many of the sites would be blocked by the content filters that my sister had activated for his account. He would moan, "Why is Super Mario blocked!".

After many complaints I eventually check out the sites on my own computer. What I found was in addition to maps, music, art and hints for "Mario" & "Zelda" these sites also had pictures supposedly of "Britney Spears Naked" among other, plus "Princess Di Crash photos". Which I then of course started to see adds for both crop up in my browsing.

A couple of years later when he was a bit older and the topic came up. I said to him I never got what Video Games and "Britney Spears Naked" Have to do with each other. He looked at me like I was stupid and said "Teenage boys!"

*shrugs then giggles*

PS. If my nephew should somehow ever come across this(highly unlikely) he will now know it is me.

Absolutely!

I remember doing some research on Martin Luther King a few years ago, and the first set of results I came up with were from a website I hadn't (then) heard of--Stormfront. Filthy people.

Don't go looking for it, it's a neoNazi site.

Domestic violence isn't

Domestic violence isn't funny. And the ad by itself is bordering on the offensive.

But I have to laugh whenever I'm on You Tube and I see links to stuff that I absolutely detest. I can only conclude that my browsing history is so eclectic the software simply can't make head nor tail of me.

Ban nothing. Question everything.

Chuck your cookies.

Seriously.

If you see ads that feel like they are almost stalking you it is because they are.
They are driven by tracking cookies. A good tip is to delete all cookies in your browser regularly. If you have never done it before work out out how to open up the list stored on your computer and be prepared for a shock.

I've lost my cookies on more than one occasion. Does that count?

Did you lose them, or toss

Did you lose them, or toss them? :)

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Not genuine?

I strongly suspect the source of this ad. It could be anyone who has taken an existing ad and done a cut and paste on it as a 'joke' and then emailed it to his friends. Ha-ha. Sad pillock.

And we British lay no claim to a monopoly on male stupidity, so please don't attack all British on the basis of one stupid act.
