Danny waited until he knew his parents had been gone for an hour then he called them on the cell phone. "Mom?"

"Yes, dear, what is it? We're just taking the exit to the I-5 North. Traffic is horrible." Mrs. Sweet sounded harrassed.

Danny could hear his father and sister, Penny, arguing. "I thought we were going to take the coast road!"

His father sounded annoyed. "That would take half again as long. We won't get to Berkely till after dark as it is, since you had to say goodbye to your boyfriend and all that scene."

"Well, he's going to miss me and I'm going to miss him."

"Will you two shut up?" Mom snapped. Then into the phone, "Is everything all right, Danny? You miss us already?"

"Well, yeah, but you and Dad are going to be back Monday, right? Unless you decide to stay at Aunt Steffie's for a few days and see San Francisco?"

"That's right. You're old enough to take care of yourself now and your father and I haven't really had a vacation alone in years." She whispered. "Soon as we get rid of your sister, we're going to party."

Danny laughed. "Well, you guys have fun and I can always FedEx you anything you forgot so you can have a good time. Don't worry about me."

"I'll try not to," his Mom said. "What did you say your name was again?"

Laughing again, Danny said goodbye and promised to be home to get a call or make one, later that evening. As soon as he hung up, he headed down the hall to his sister's room. Penny had packed a lot of her things to take to college with her but there ought to be plenty left in the back of the closet.
