meganekko-coffeekizoku-75-c.png This year, I am doing a Fall themed Back to School Contest to try and include as many authors as possible. Your submissions should be about a character whom is TGLIB (Trans, Gay, Lesbian, Intersexed, or Bi) attending school. This can be elementary school, middle school, high school, or college. The plot should involve a transition of the character from before transition to TGLIB. Other than that, everything else is all yours to create. Length of submission - any size, all entries must be brand new material never published before anywhere. Any number of submissions may be entered, but only one, from any author, may place as a winner.

Contest Prizes are as follows: 1 x $100, 2 x $50, and 4 x $25!!
Prizes are subject to being raised before the end of the contest!

Erin and I will reserve one 2nd place and two 3rd place prizes for our picks from newer authors that did not win from the popular vote. So new authors, rejoice, there are 2 ways to win and no reason not to try our contest out this year!

Do not FORGET to properly label your submission(s) on the ++Fiction page using the contest box and select the label: TopShelf's Fall 2014 Back to School Contest!

Dorothy's cheating, she's

Dorothy's cheating, she's already got her story done.

Funny...

erica jane's picture

You don't look like Jaci. And that's a very Jaci thing to say.

~And so it goes...

Why does it have to start before the character's transition?

I mostly ask because first thing that popped in my mind was a PFH short following one of my already-made characters at the start of their sophomore year (probably Ruby,) but following the rules of the contest would leave that idea disqualified.

Melanie E.

A solution to that problem

A solution to that problem would be to do a prequel and start with that character's first arriving at the School. Like Julian or Sarah for example.

I Don't Think The Rules Are Meant To Be That Strict

I think there's enough slack in this rule for it to be bent slightly. As I understand it, the idea is to explore the issues that arise from the decision to begin transitioning in a school or college setting. It needn't be the protagonist/central character who makes this choice, as long as someone does. You could, for example, have a trans woman's POV as she guides a student through the initial stages, and still remain within the parameters outlined. If this isn't the case, I hope the contest organisers will make that clear.

Ban nothing. Question everything.

Exactly!

It's that easy. The situation just has to proceed from before transition to the transition into school.

That is the harder of the two ways I see doing this: Externally from someone else's point of view. Telling the story from the main character's point of view would be juicier and more prevalent.

Whatever plot material your heart desires to toss in is up to you but that is all that is necessary to enter the contest.

Whateley

This is a dream for you writers to do another Whateley back to school story . I hope someone will
Looking forward to see what stories are written
HUGS EVERYBODY Richie2

Seph, I have a question. I

Seph, I have a question. I was thinking of continuing my Best Friend's Girl as this, I mean he started dressing up in the first series, but I plan to have him/her transition more fully so the story would start with her transforming more into a girl. Just a question, and if it is acceptable than I would do that if not will have to think of another idea.

Thanks, it will be all new, I

Thanks, it will be all new, I am getting ready to start writing it.

I've got a story that I'm working on for this.

erica jane's picture

It's got some real darkness in it. Last night I pitched the story synopsis to a couple of people who were in webchat.

I used a situation that happened to a friend of mine back in high school. I didn't know it was happening to her then, I didn't find out until years later. It just came to mind when I was plotting this story, so I used it.

~And so it goes...

Well...

erica jane's picture

After looking at this a second time, I don't want to finish this story. Too dark, and I started it while I was in a really rotten place emotionally.

If I can get this silly piece I'm working on now done in time, I will try to come up with something for the contest.

~And so it goes...

Valentine sweetie!

You should visit the chat room! And you to could be inspired like Dottie! LOL! Loving Hugs Talia

Already have an idea.

I already have an inspiration and characters and everything to use...

Now just to write it.

Teacher, teacher!

shiinaai's picture

I have few questions:
1) Can it in be a story in several chapters?
2) Will the rights of the story go to bigcloset or will I retain the rights to it?
3) Is crossdressing/crossplaying eligible?

You see, I have a story that may fit the contest, but it's meant for my visual novel. So if there's a conflict of interest, I can't join.

Answer Answer!

1. Yes
2. You will. It is always the author's at all times.
3. As long as the character is Trans, Gay, Lesbian, Intersexed, or Bisexual. That is the qualifier for the character and the story to be in the contest.

I have an outline in the works....

Ragtime Rachel's picture

Unlike the last time I tried to submit to a contest, I plan to have a crystal-clear idea of where the story is going before I even write the thing. If I don't, rest assured what could be a great story is going to get bogged down in the middle.

Don't take me too seriously. I'm just kitten around. :3

Kind of worried now

Just re-read the parameters of the competition, and am wondering if Back to the Grind fills the requirements.

Maeryn Lamonte, the girl inside

Seems OK to Me...

Your submissions should be about a character whom is TGLIB (Trans, Gay, Lesbian, Intersexed, or Bi) attending school.

Jackie's certainly attending school, even if it's not in the capacity we expect.

Eric

Quick question...

Page of Wands's picture

Are transformation-type stories permitted, or does it have to be a more mundane sort of LGBTIQ character?

Too sad, but I won't be able to join this time. TT-TT Too many things to do and my fiverr job is on the upward trend too. Not that I'm complaining. More work is good work.
