I spent ages this morning trying to get Internet Exploder to download the sites I wanted to visit. For some reason it doesn't like Top Shelf. I was cross anyway, because I should have been doing a bike ride today and had to cry off because I wasn't very well. So after taking another long period to download an alternative - this being my netbook with dongle connection, which claims to work at 7.2Mbs, but is more like 5Kbs - I am now writing this with the good offices of Firefox, amazing what you can do with cheese. Thank you Mozzarella for your assistance.

Pavarotti

You could also Try Opera then you could sing your praises or problems with Pavarotti. If that does not then bicyle your way with Google Chrome.

It is a long road ahead but I will finally become who I should be.

I've had chrome

for a year or two, don't particularly like it.

Chrome and Firefox

Chrome and Firefox are the only two browsers I will use. I detest Internet Exploder with a passion and never really felt comfortable with Opera, though I haven't heard bad things there. The only problem I ever have with Firefox is it can take up a heck of a lot of memory right now, on its latest release. But it is ever so much better than Internet Exploder ever will be.

only allows it as an add on, so I have to access it through Microshit Internet Exploder, still I suppose that's better than nothing.

changing the default browser

At the top of your Firefox window, drill down:

Tools >> Main

at the bottom of the window, there is a box to "always check to see if firefox is the default browser".

Whether you check it or not, click on the "Check Now" button.

You will get a dialog block saying "Firefox is not currently set as your default browser, do you want to make it your default browser?"

Click on "yes"

IE will fade into your memories of the distant past.

It all depends

Over the last six months I've been fooling with multiple browsers; I really can't say any one is the best. I have IE6 (my default and preferred choice), Firefox 2.final (have not gone to FF3 yet), and Chrome on my desk and laptop. My Windows Mobile cellphone uses a version of IE and I have purchased and installed the Opera Mobile browser. (Yes, you have to BUY the Opera Mobile browser.)

Each one has it's good points and bad. I do not care for the newest versions of IE, things that everybody else seem to love I hate, such as tabbed browsing. So I cling to IE6, even though it is becoming less and less usable.

Firefox is a s-l-o-w browser, taking over twice as long to completely load sites such as BC. I generally get annoyed waiting for it to load all the images now appearing on the BC homepage and stab the Stop button. I have barely gotten into the plugins, but one of the few I have downloaded and started to become comfortable with specifically states it is not compatabile with FF3, so I've stayed with the final version of FF2. I have turned off tabbed browsing, preferring a new window for each site.

Chrome is a bit better, loading up sites like BC or My Yahoo faster than FF2, but still slower than IE6. I don't care for the method it uses for handling bookmarks/favorites, preferring to have them stay open rather than disappearing if I move the mouse to the wrong place. Like FF, I have shut off tabbed browsing.

On my cell, there are multiple mini-browsers out there, none truly good. I use either the Windows Mobile version of IE, or sometimes Opera Mobile, depending on what I'm trying to do. Sites like BC challange both, it can be tricky to get stories to display without loosing letters on the left or right side. Sites that claim to be optimised for use with mobile phones do better, but are sometimes so stripped down I don't even bother.

So, to make a long story short, while each browser has it's bright points, each one can also be a big PITA. For now, I'm a heratic (or whatever) and generally stick with IE6.

Flame away!

(FYI, I wrote and posted this using the WM6.1 version of IE.)

To speed up Firefox for BCTS loads

use the addon for it called Ad Block Plus. That is the best thing I have ever seen on a browser - ever! It blocks ads from being on your pages and you can add to the list or take something off the list you accidentally manually added. What that means is you can load the page without the browser hunting all the ad sites all over the internet for new ads to toss onto your page and slow its load down.

Okay, thanks

I'll give it a try.

Ad Blocking has a rather nasty side-effect...

...in the form of reduced revenue to Big Closet, so be sure to send Erin a donation for the lost income if one's conscience starts to bother one.

P.S. You might try clicking on some of the mainstream ads as well, since the pay grade for clicks is higher than mere views.

As an option...

...one can elect to only block some of the ad servers, a compromise between total loss of income and annoyance at advertisers who forget that not all can upgrade their computers every six months to accommodate the latest bandwidth-wasting, processor-hogging, memory-overflowing bells and whistles (that smell remarkably like feces...) that the Dark Lords of Ad06e have poured out (on)to the undeserving lumpen masses. /rant >.< /frustration?...

I also use a script blocker, in addition to adblock.

Safari and Firefox

erin's picture

I use Safari and Firefox to websurf. Safari is faster, Firefox is a bit more standard. Since I'm on a Mac, IE5 is my only choice for MS product and it stinks.

When someone has a problem, I sometimes fire up one of my Windows machines, Vista or XP and see how things look on that. I've also got a machine that runs Linux.

I've been slowly adapting BC for easier browsing with mobile devices, and I do mean slowly. :) Some of the recent changes were for that purpose.

Hugs,
Erin

Worse than stinks, it's dangerous.

Microsoft Notice:

In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and is not providing any further security or performance updates.

Accordingly, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac is no longer available for download from Microsoft. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari.

-----------

The browser is vulnerable to numerous web exploits, so if one wants to use it for testing (a total waste of time, in my opinion), one should avoid accessing html beyond one's own machine or private network.

In addition, it's so far out of step with Web standards that it fails to properly load even Microsoft's own home page, last I looked.

Unfortunately, MSIE is still used by two thirds of the world, so one does have to test, but test with an updated version on a Windows machine.

Memory usage

shiraz's picture

As I'm a linux nerd I don't have much use for IE normally and FF is my favourite but I use Mozilla Seamonkey for BCTS just to keep my TG bookmarks separate from my work and coursework.

Today, of all days, I was helping a good friend with their very slow XP SP3 machine. I was monitoring memory and swapfile usage. Considering that IE is part of the Windows kernel I was surprised to see that IE used more memory than FF.

I don't understand, even yet, again?

I run one of those quad watzits with 6 gib of memry and uses Vista GAH! It uses IE 8. For a long time I used Firefox, but trying to run it on this machine proved to be such a bother that I gived up. I can't figure out why it would be such a problem in GB to download BCTS, though when I was in Thailand, BCTS was blocked. I can not begin to imagine why. I recently updated Norton and added Adaware. For now I am a very happy little bimbo except have been completely unable to find someone to keep me gagged, and propahly spanked.

Oh I did try to comment on one of Fox Newses, stuuuupid stories and the site got very weird when I told the author that he better hope that the poor get some help, or he would be dodging bullets likely. They got very unneigborly after that. HMPH!
