Hope
by Saless

There once was a woman
born under a terrible curse.
She struggled with it mightily
only to be crushed underfoot.
So deep in despair was she thrust
that ending it all seemed her only choice.
But that which killed the cat did save
this poor distraught woman.
And so she did lift herself up
and stride forth once more.
But the weight which once had crushed her flat
did slowly bring her low.
Twisted and tormented
her mind lost its way.
To escape the pain
that stabbed so deep
she did most strange things.
Dire consequences followed
as they so often do.
More pain and fear were thus piled on
an already overburdened mind.
So crushed by these events was she
that once more she sought her death.
But a kind heart and a sharp eye
robbed her of the opportunity.
Stuck, unable to flee
she was forced to endure her pain.
But protected as she was she found
her mind and thoughts clearing.
Horrified at where she'd gone
both in body and in mind,
she vowed never to hide
from the curse and the pain it brought.
And so she went forth again
and tried to find her way.
Living and working but never forgetting
how she'd brought herself so low.
For years she struggled on
with little hope or joy.
But if only she had known the cure
that waited for her curse.
But eventually she did learn
the options that she had.
And so with renewed hope she strode
on a new and wonderful path.
Pain and sorrow still plagued her
but joy and happiness too.
And true hope for the future bloomed
to strengthen the woman's resolve.
But time and pain have a way
of darkening even the brightest dawn.
And so the weight returned
to shoulders well accustomed to it.
But then she found a place
where her curse was known all too well.
And people there who understood
all that she had known and felt.
With her they shared their pains and fears
and hopes and dreams as well.
And in return she shared her own
and felt a second home she had.
Such happiness she felt
in this welcoming place,
that nearly complete she thought
her life would now be.
But one thing she had neglected
for no hope for it had she.
Though friends she had, and family too
who accepted her curse and all.
But somehow all this was not enough
though she tried to make it be.
For alone she still was in this world
and alone she was sure she would die.
Pain that certainty brought to her
and soon it was too much.
Despite all that she had gained
she withdrew into herself.
Now at last she's trying
to leave her self-made cage.
And hopes one day of finding
a soul to match her own.
