A Tapestry of Stars

The first thing that drew my attention when I came into my local Pride center for the first time was a large tapestry with gold stars covering it. Above the tapestry was the the words “We remember” in large glowing letters.

I went over to one of the staff and said, “Wow. That represents all the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people who have lost their lives?”

“Actually, that’s just for the Trans people. We need a book for the others.”

I went over to the tapestry and touched one of the stars, reading the name embossed on it and wept.

He saw my reaction, and said “You’re a girl, arent you.”

“You can tell? I’ve been in the closet so long ….”

He smiled at me, and said, “Lets just say I could see the real you peeking out. Does the fact you’re here today mean you’re considering doing more than peek?”

“I … I think I have to, but I’m scared. I could end up like one of these people.”

“I get that. But maybe, if you aren’t alone, that wont happen.”

“I dont pass, though. I cant see how I could make it work.”

“Maybe one time, you could come in as your real self, and get some objective opinions on what you need.”

“I .. I will have to think about that.” I said, and fled the building.

Weeks went by, and finally with the support of many friends online, I stepped out in a skirt, and drove down to the Pride center.

I came in the door, and the same person was at the table. When he saw me, he gave me a smile and said, “Hello. I’m glad you gave this a shot.”

“Scared to death, but somehow it felt better than I expected at the same time.” I said.

“I’m sure it did. So, what will you do now?”

“Go back home, I guess. Coming in here is one thing, going to a public place? I dont want to end up on your wall.”

“You look okay, if that helps. I dont think anybody would give you a second look.”

“Nice of you to say so.”

“I mean it. Look, its just about my lunch break, and I was going over to the mall downtown for lunch. Come with me. At least then you wont be alone if someone did act negatively.”

I looked at him carefully, and felt sure he was sincere.

“Okay. But what can we do about those people on the wall, even if you’re right?”

“We remember them. But one of the ways we can honor them is by living our lives without fear. You ready to take the plunge?” He stood and offered his arm to me.

I looked at the tapestry, and then said, “You’re.... right.” I took his arm, and we walked out the door.

“Just so you know, dear. I can’t fancy you. I’m into guys only, not pretty girls. But I would be honored to be a friend .” He said as we left.

“I .. did you say I was pretty?”

“Just like a girl, to focus on that.”

“I’m a girl.”

“Duh.”

“You know, I’m going to lunch with a strange man, and I dont even know your name?”

“I’m Mark.”

“Nice to meet you. Call me Sarah.”

“Cool. Means ‘Princess’, so it suits you.”

I blushed a bit, and then said, “Thank you.”

We had a lovely lunch, and no one seemed to think me strange looking, allowing my tension to fade.

“Thank you for this.”

“Glad I could help. Anytime I’m free, we can do the lunch thing.”

“Thank you so much. You didn’t even know me, why were you willing to do this?”

“I knew some of the people who arent on that wall, but should be. They were not killed by others, but died at their own hand because they couldn’t stand hiding but couldn’t figure out how live outside the closet. And I could tell you were at that point.”

“I... I was. Now I have hope.”

“Good. Now I have to get back to work. See you next time?”

“You know it.”

And as the old movie said, that was the start of a beautiful friendship.

Beautiful. It honors both

Gwendolyn's picture

Beautiful. It honors both those who have passed, as well as those who continue on to find their place in the world. But I think there's another message here. There are true friend's out there waiting to meet you if your brave enough to take that first step. I do wish more people in the closet and outside the trans spectrum could see what a great community there is.

true friends, Gwendolyn?

Honoring both those who have passed and those making the journey now was my intent. As for "True friends", I know I have many who have helped me get as far as I have.

I know, my writing style is

Gwendolyn's picture

I know, my writing style is still a bit corny. :-) When I can truly let myself out of boy head space, the way I talk is in the preteen, everything in italics, style. I'm working on how much of it I actually want to tone down. :-P

Pretty nice Dorothy. And

Pretty nice Dorothy. And hopeful too!!

We Remember, we gain, we grow

Thank you Dorothy, for this tale of remembrance and hope... two things that should always go together.
Remembering those whose lives were cut short but whose light will shine forever.

Yes, sadly, some paid the highest price to try and be themselves. And yes, that "first time", its such an experience ...

Now we just have to hope for

Now we just have to hope for a day when no more stars will be added to that tapestry.

thank you, Valentine

Indeed, that is my hope as well.

A Tapestry of Stars

Thanks, Dorothy Colleen.

Are you or your ancestors Irish? You're one of those with the ability to produce a well-turned-out story. I've been near the point where Sarah was, often. Thanks for remembering everybody: those who died because of another person's actions directly, and those who couldn't take the internal or external pain or both anymore and died by their own hand.

Thanks especially for reminding people that it isn't always direct action from bullies and bigots that kills, it can also be what happens when you can no longer go on and can see no other way out.

Thank you for posting the story, and Erin for hosting the site!

KR

thank you, KR

there is a bit of Irish in me. A bit of just about every part of the United Kingdom in me, really. Yes, we can get to the point where we feel like we cannot go on, but, as the video series says it, "It gets better." If you hang around, and are willing to be brave sometimes.

Thank you so much for the comment.

Beautiful...

Very poignant, a fitting tribute to those who for whatever reason, aren't here with us today.

Thank you.

Ohhhhh Dorthy!!

What can I say, lovely story. So glad they decided to use it what an honor! I'm sure I am not the only one with tears in their eyes by the going out to lunch part (made me giggle too though). We all need a friend like that.
See I'm not alone, I am not a freak, unique but not a freak! Hmmm sounds like a Tee Shirt slogan, giggles.

Hugs!!

sounds like a good slogan, although I still prefer my "Team Dorothy" T'shirts

Sounds Familiar. . .

janet_L.'s picture

The first time I told ANYONE I was transsexual was at the Fall Harvest Conference in Kansas City in 2008.

At that point I'd read enough on the internet that I figured I'd need extensive facial feminization surgery (FFS) to pass. Dr. Sherman Leis, who spoke on exactly that subject talked to me and convinced me otherwise.

Now, my year of real life test is drawing to a close and I'm looking forward to my surgery next year (Tentatively next summer, but that might get moved up.)

Some time I should thank Dr. Leis.

- Janet.

Yes, you should thank the Doctor

I'm really glad it turns out I'm okay without FFS as well. Thanks so much for commenting.

I have long believed that the Transgender Day of Remembrance is not so much about death as it is hope. Yes, we honor our dead by remembering them, but we do so in the hope that one day things will be different. Your story is one of hope and courage, a reminder that there is good in the world, we just have to look for it, and nourish it when we find it.
