Jem…Chapter 16

Chapter 16

I can believe that way that Summer just sang that and took the bow and the praise along with that little fucking speech she just gave everyone. I look at Raven and she’s just sort of staring at the stage like she’s in shock. I grab Brooklyn’s arm before she takes off at the stage after Summer... and Roxy is looking at me all teary eyes but hurt and freaked with this what do we do look.

I get up in front of them all and wait until I see them breaking down their stuff. “Okay, C’mon.” I haul Raven up to her feet and take her by one hand to the stage and there a few tense minutes of not saying anything and it was really, really nearly a fight. There was a lot of temptation there and I had to keep telling Brooklyn. “No…no. We out play them.” We recheck things and I set up the video stuff and the tip box and watch Rave watching summer with her tongue down the throat of what could be only that guy Muzz.

Dude is so fake it’s almost stupid. Union Jack sleeveless t-shirt and black pvc pants like they’re supposed to be real leather and studded wrist bands and “snake skin boots’ he’s like a walking cliché. Well a walking unshaven cliché that hasn’t heard of the concept of soap. The fact they were using tongues and considering his hygiene odds are he didn’t have a friendship to his toothbrush.

I go over to Raven. “Are you going to be okay?”

She just shrugs, tuning her guitar.

“Look she did it, she’s a bitch of the worst fucking kind and Scunts like her always get what’s coming to them.”

“Maybe…”

“Maybe look at what she has pawing her you can’t tell me that he’s the prize for Christ’s sakes Raven look at him she’s boffing Iggy Pop’s retarded crack head little brother.”

She smiles just a little bit around the edges.

“We can do this, we’re better than Sucks off a Thornbush.”

Another bit of a smile…god part of me loves making her smile. She says softly with a hint of a laugh hidden in there. “Sucks off a Thornbush huh?”

“Yeah, it fits okay some of their songs were good and that last one was written beautifully but we have the original songwriter here…so what do you have that we can play?”

“Nothing…”

“Bullshit, I write too Rayne and when it comes to stuff like this that’s what we do. We write and sing and we play it out so do you have something?”

“Y…yeah…”

“You got music it?”

“Yeah it’s simple though.”

“Write it down, gimme the words…”

“No.”

“No?”

“I...I have to sing it…”

“Okay cool, just give us the notes then.”

She starts to write stuff down by hand and I see Mike come in and a number of faces from the mall including the Hindu fellow that ran the mall, Richard from Home Hardware with what looks like his wife and a few guys from there still in their work shirts and not long after that Ian and Steven with a few friends….holy crap there must be thirty or forty people here…I get waved at and I wave back.

Brooklyn looks at me and so does Raven and Roxy. “What? I said I told a few people.”

They grin and even Raven looks like she’s shaking it off.

Summer is looking at the influx of people and the waves and from them to me and back again and she leans against the pit-stain she’s calling her guy but crosses her arms looking very pissed off.

I look at Raven. “You ready?”

“Yeah but I’m nervous about singing.”

“Don’t be…Rave you’re rock-emo-goth-punk…anyway…you’re in black with all your piercings in and your hair down and in a coffee shop getting ready to play a gig…hell this is home turf right?”

She actually smiles a bit and I smile back and walk backwards giving Roxy the nod.

Roxy stars drumming and Brook has the tambourine and the base tune starts up and I’m playing as I’m walking back from Raven and no intro yet I want them to get a taste first. There’s nothing like the tambourine to get the bodies moving though…I still need to get us a ukulele.

We open with “Soul Sister.” By Train.

It’s a really good tune with the “Hey’s” getting into the crowd and the dancing that we do and I definitely do on the stage and me and Raven singing it together to/at each other I keep her eyes mostly on me but we look to the crowd too. It’s both of us singing at the same time and not a duet but like we’re singing it for each other. It’s already working getting them moving and the people that are kind of friends and stuff like Ian and Steven and their dates and stuff and Richard and his girlfriend are standing so they kind of start dancing.

We go right from that to “Boots of Chinese Plastic.” By The Pretenders.

I step right up and eat the mike and belt out the superfast tune and the girls really, really play there’s some serious guitar there and while that fast licks are going without my vocals I’m dancing my ass off shaking everything and tossing my hair left and right my hair and just cranking out the energy and getting it back as the crowd starts to move.

It’s a short tune and when it’s done I giggle-laugh into the mike and. “Whew! Had to get that out of my system (Big smile) hi I’m Jem…” I get a heckle from what sounds like Summer.

“And the holograms…Lose-R!”

I stay smiling. “Yeah sort like that; sorta not I’m more like what happens when Gene Simmons ends up using Mary-Kay.”

There’s some laughs in the crowd and Raven actually grinds out the opening licks to Kiss’s “God Of Thunder” before waving her off grinning.

“Okay…seriously everyone thanks for having us here tonight and this is the debut act for the re-vamped and renewed Starlight Butterfly!”

I go through and intro the girls. “Well I talked long enough I mean we’re her to play for you all right!”

The crowd yells. “Right!”

“Okay!...one..two..One, two, three four!”

We go right into Joan Jett’s “A.C.-D.C.” More great guitar girly rock with really high energy and I sing this one along with Raven and Brooklyn there’s some dancing and a lot of clapping as we belt out the tunes there’s a few places that we’re singing all three of us together in a row one the main microphone and Roxy is a beast on the drums. This is a great song for drums and we really hammer it out and go fast and straight into another great girl-rock tune.

“Because I’m Awesome!” By the Dollyrots.

Then once the groove is going we trot out “Walk like an Egyptian.” By The Bangles and that get’s most of the girls in the place bopping with me as I hopefully get the dance moves right. We still get the shouted “Oh-wey-oh!” especially when I point the mike out at the crowd and they take up the invitation.

We stop and grab some of the waters I brought for us and take a drink and I walk/pace to cool myself. “Yeah, that was way more like it you guys are awesome! But we’re here at a coffee shop and I’ve always wanted to sing this song at a place like this…you guys good with that?”

They yell. “Yeah!”

I gulp down some water and then I give the girls the nod and Brooklyn switches to an acoustic and I relax into the song and get close to the front of the stage.

“Drove downtown in the rain… (The whole place starts clapping.)”
“nine thirty on a Tuesday night.”
“Just to check out the late-night…” I point the mike to the crowd and they all sing.

“Record shop!” ………..God I love this.

“Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane…”
“But when I’m surrounded I just can’t….stop.”

“It’s a matter of instinct, it’s a matter of conditioning.”
“It’s a matter of fact.”
“You can call me Pavlov’s …dog.”
“Ring a bell and I’ll salivate…How’d you like that?”
“Dr. Landy tell me you just not a pedagogue…”

“’cause right now…”

“I’m lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.”
“Well I’m lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did…”

The song is one of my favourite tunes and a lot of peoples too, there is just something hypnotic to the way it’s played and the lyrics that makes “Brian Wilson” by the Bare-Naked-Ladies almost iconic like a lot of their tunes. This song belongs in a John Cusack movie. There are parts to it that just beg to be sung along with. I’m no Stephen page but instead I try to put this almost Alanis Morissette sound to my voice when I sing it.

There’s a lot of clapping when we finish that and some more water and Raven walks over to me. “Can we switch out now? I need to sing a bit before we’re done. You know one hand?”

“Yeah sure.”

“Okay, I...I’m going to sing that first and then we’ll do the new song?”

“Sounds good Rayne.” Then she gives me this look through the sweat damp hair. “Oh no…It’s Raven.”

She’s either pissed or she’s got her second wind but she just cat walk sways up to take the mike and does this sexy hair flip and talks into it. “Hey, I’m Raven and It’s my turn to sing…just please bear with me it’s been awhile but this song is about my Ex-girlfriend but I’m dedicating it to myself…”

She does that lean forward and back a bit with the rhythm of the song as we’re playing the music for. I can’t help but to smile as Raven starts to sing. “One Hand in My Pocket.” By Alanis Morissette. And as she’s singing the words I can see her standing up to the scunt in that you didn’t break me way.

“I’m broke but I’m happy.”
“I’m poor but I’m kind.”
“I’m big but I’m healthy…”
“Yeah!”

“I’m high but I’m grounded.”
“I’m sane but I’m overwhelmed.”
“I’m lost but I’m hopeful!”
“Baby!”

“What it all comes down too…”
“Is that everything’s going to be..”
“Fine, fine, fine!”

“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket…”
“and the other one’s giving a high-five!”

“I feel drunk but I’m sober.”
“I’m young and I’m underpaid.”
“I’m tired but I’m working…”
“Yeah!”

“I care but I’m restless.”
“I’m here but I’m really gone.”
“I’ve be wrong but I’m not sorry!”
“Baby!”

“What it all comes down to…”
“Is that everything’s gonna be quite alright!”

“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket…”
“and the other one is flicking a cigarette.”

Then she’s dancing like she’s dropped this weight off her shoulders and Brooklyn has a harmonica out and is playing through that part of the song. Raven’s even shaking her head with the music while hanging onto the mike stand then steps right back up again.

“And what it all comes down too…!”
“is that I haven’t got it figured out just yet…”
“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket…”
“and the other one’s just for her…!”

And she gives the middle finger to where summer might be at and I can’t help but to smile at her doing that, at her taking enough of herself back to do that. And yeah…she changed a few of the words but I like this version better. And did you know that the f-u finger was the original for the song Alanis had but the studio made he change it?

“I’m free but I’m focused.”
“I’m green but I’m wise…”
“I’m hard! But I’m friendly…!”
“Baby!” ………………. Okay all the girls in the place just shouted it with her.

“I’m sad but I’m laughing.”
“I’m brave but I’m chickenshit…”
“I’m sick but I’m pretty…Baby!”…….again the girls are yelling it..they’ve been there.

“And what it all boils down too…”
“Is that no one’s got it figured out just yet…”
“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket.”………Brooklyn starts more harmonica.
“and the other one is playing the piano…”

“And what it all comes down too my friends…”
“Yeah…”
“Is that everything’s just…”
“Fine, fine, fine…”……………..The girls in the crowd are joining in with those now too.

“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket….”
“and the other one is hailing a taxi cab!”
The song winds down with us playing and Brooklyn trailing off with the harmonica solo fading us out.

There people that we’re standing who are standing now and Raven steps back and runs a hand through her hair and blows out a big breath of nerves and takes a water from Brooklyn drains a lot of it and then give us the nod and we start to play the notes she wrote down for us and she moves with the mike stand dancing with it.

“This is a song I wrote just two days ago when everything was wrong and everything was hurting and she made it so, right…Angel this songs for you…It’s called Billie Holiday.”

Oh…I get this huge, huge fucking lump in my throat and just her saying something like that just. I’ve never had someone do something like this before. And she gives me this long, long look before closing her eyes and starts to sing.

“I thought I was going to be the hero.”
“When I found you there all alone.”
“So alone…”
“Lonely and cold.”

“But it was you that picked me up when I had fallen.”
“Turned my grey skies into sunshine…and I remember…”
“Oh I remember thinking, blue, blue eyes and that smile…”
“When do Angels wear that much make-up…”

“Oh come here a little closer.”
“Just let me wrap my arms around you.”
“So I can say…so I can say…”
“You’re my Billie Holiday.”

“I took you in but you gave me shelter.”
“You taught me that I wouldn’t be broken forever.”
“You make it better…”
“You made it better…”
“You made me believe in love again…!”

“Oh come here a little closer.”
“Just let me wrap my arms around you.”
“So I can say…so I can say…”
“You’re my Billie Holiday…”

“When I’m with you I feel safe now…”
“Oh so safe now…!”
“No more crying in the shadows…”
“No more cutting, no more shame…”
“No, no, no…!”

“Oh come here a little closer.”
“Just let me wrap my arms around you…”
“So I can say…so I can say…”
“You’re my Billie Holiday…”

“You are my candle.”
“You are my light.”
“You are a love song.”
“You’re my flame…”

“Oh…sweet, sweet Angel…”
“You’re my Billy Holiday…”

I can barely see her through the tears that are completely destroying my make up and I can’t breathe right and my heart…god can feeling this good, wanted…special kill you? I can’t get the smile off of my face though and…

God…!
Oh God…!
No one’s ever, done this for me…!

By the time I can see I’m looking into Raven’s eyes as she’s playing the final song and I’m playing it too and I think we’re both so emotional we play a bit long and Brooklyn steps over to the empty mike and starts singing us out as the last song we planned on.

“That’s it folks, last song of the night.”

I’m still crying and just trying to get a grip and staring over at Raven too as we play out singing along with Brooklyn to close down our show with “Two for the show.” By Trooper.

The lights are dimmed somewhere during Raven’s last song and there’s lighters out, people swaying and holding their S.O’s and the older parts of the crowd are singing along to it.

It’s been bad, it’s been good…Hell I think this is the best night of my life.

This chapteer made the

This chapteer made the cinema in my head work on high power... I could so imagine this. It should be a movie or something. Starlight Butterfly fighting anger and grief with their music.
Especially the song... I could almost hear it.

Thank you for writing this awesome chapter.

did not disappoint

nice chapter, too bad the sound track does not come with it. now we have to see how the ex reacts, the next time they show up to to the second set is really going to piss her off.
great job, thanks

I'm not sure a sound track would work for me.

I like to write what's going on in the performance sometimes and i think that'd get lost a bit in translation for me. But oh you're so right Summer will take a serious shit fit. It should be fun though to write.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

"No one’s ever, done this for me…!"

what a great gift Raven gave her. Nobody has tried to write a song about Dorothy yet, but I'm not dead, so it could happen.

Oh, and great story, too.

I think there's a lot of us that'd want that.

To have a song written about us...Yeah it's cornball and all that but cornball can be good.
And you never know right.

I need to get better at dropping hints

you were SUPPOSED to say "why Dorothy, I'd love to write a song about you."

Is it me or has Summer fled?

Is it me or has Summer fled? This story makes me wish so much for an Angel/Raven pairing, I will have to be patient to see whether the pair will sort themselves out, it's a great story but so fruatrating at the same time.

Looking forward to more, just don't keep us in suspenders...I mean suspense too long (giggle)

Suspenders? Don'tcha mean Garters?

Summer hasn't fled...yet, I'm planning on another sort of POV moment in the next chapter. I'm not sure what'll happen with Angel and Raven, some people don't think them hooking up will happen. Is the fact that Raven is a lesbian too big a gap?

...I'll endeavor to catch up to this as soon as I can, but I did want to tell you how precious your dedication at the top is! I am so appreciative of the love you have for Jonelle, and it really brings me joy when I see it expressed in such a sweet way! May you enjoy every blessing this Christmas and into the New Year as well!

Maybe not a couple

... but definitely Angel is BFF that is for sure. Again, short of GRS, being partners aint gonna happen.

So Summer is a bi skank. Summer is also the reason that lesbians are leery of becoming partners with bi-women. Not to mention bi-women have twice the temptation available to them.

Summer is gonna be pissed to say the least with the public dissing. :). She's the type who wants to be doing the dissing in the first place. She probably couldn't do it properly as she is probably shits at song writing.

Kim

Yeah Kim, Summer is the kind of

girl that gives shanks a bad name. No she's not going to like getting dissed but more that that will be the blow to her ego... How dare Raven get over her. She's Summer and she took that frumpy little...She she be broken up over not having her in her life any more.

Them being together is a sticky issue.
But I am getting ideas.
And Yeah Summer is shits at songwriting.

I don’t need you cause I’m neato and I beat you..

Jemima Tychonaut's picture

THE GIG. Yes, they've played together at the club and at home and Jem's busked but this was what we've been waiting for. Starlight Butterfly vs. The Misfits (okay, I know they aren't actually called the Misfits but the stories called Jem, so humour me!) in THE GIG. Did it disappont? Hell, no. :-) The reason it worked was the reason many band movies don't, in that the songs were linked intricately to the plot and the characters. You can have all the great songs you want but they've got to link back to the band somehow for it to really click.

As for the playlist. Wow. So many good songs in the covers. Soul Sister by Train - I've adored this song since I first heard it. It's so infectiously fun and reason enough to want to learn the ukulele just for the opening. Brilliant for getting the crowd going and has Jem history. Same with Boots of Chinese Plastic and Joan Jett, which between them really help define a sound for the girls. The Dollyrots song I didn't know but on hearing it, I had to add it to my ipod. Amazing song, just gets you going with the guitar and then the first 'uh huh'... :-) And an excellent dig at Summer of course in the lyrics "I don’t need you cause I’m neato and I beat you, Cause I’m awesome'. Bangles and Walk Like An Egyptian is one of those timeless classics and great for drawing the crowd into the music. Barenaked Ladies... well, is there a bad song on the Gordon album? And as for Alanis... I think there is a little to be said for when people say she writes her best when she's heartbroken. I know after my last break-up I retreated into the angry girl side of Alanis's songbook (I snarl 'you oughta know' with real venom *blush*). And then there was the Bailey Summers original song to end before the playout...

*sniffle* Beautiful.

And of course, a lovely dedication to Jonelle. *sniffle* You're a big softy Bailey Summers and a wonderfully engaging writer who can bring ordinary people to life so well.

The guantlet has been thrown down now by Starlight Butterfly. They won this round convincingly, making Summer their warm up act rather than the headliner. Game On. Trouble is, we have four wonderful girls going up against a woman with no morals. I have a horrible feeling it's going to get ugly.

Thank you for a wonderful chapter that surpassed expectations.

"Just once I want my life to be like an 80's movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life."

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

I had thought Raven belting out "You oughta know."

Will be a great cathardic moment the next time they get to sing at "The Cat" I really tried to keep a format that the songs feel like the band and have found that the girls have this girly rock mixed with a real girly power band as well and there's just some tunes that are so good really that they just fit when done right. I've been in a small club back when BNL were still touring.
And I'm so glad that the Billie Holiday turned out okay.
I loved the idea of that song.

Thanks for the super great comments Jemima:)

Practical matters

I'm still stuck in "screw that bitch!" mode, so a few items here. First off and right away, Rayne needs to file a copyright for everything she wrote. ASAP!!! With that in hand they (the band) need to pay an attorney to write a "cease and desist" letter to Summer and her new band. That's for openers.

Second all new material Angel, Rayne, or any of the other band members write needs to be copyrighted right away. They can grant a license to Starlight Butterfly to perform the songs for a nominal sum, I believe it usually goes like "for a dollar in hand and other considerations".

Third, while beating Summer's new band in every head-to-head match, they need to aggressively protect those copyrights, especially against Summer and her band. As good as these girls are, this will pay-off down the road. Many a small-time musician has signed away the rights to their original (but not copy-righted) work and regretted it later. Happened to a friend of mine, but that's another story.

I could go on, but won't. :)

"Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.”

I'm not sure about copyright laws...

But Summer took the songs in their written binder and the cassettes she had used to do her songwriting. Summer might be a skank but Muzz, Muzz had those songs copywritten and they've been playing them while Starlight Butterfly just languished.
Angel is getting started on getting permission for the covers, looking into public domain and copyright laws for the new stuff.
Any advise by PM would be appreciated.

That was some serious butt kicking!

In Raven's song, you could just hear the real feelings she has for Angel-Is he/she sure there couldn't be anything between them? I'm not so convinced.

Well done, and thanks for not making us wait! I really like Jem, and it just gets better and better. Please, could I have some more?!

Brilliant!

Summer, consider yourself toast :D

A great, crowd-pleasing bunch of covers, cumulating in switching lead vocalists for the "I'm doing fine without you" of the Alanis Morissette song, quickly followed up with an original. You sooooo need to do a vignette of Summer's reaction (assuming she stayed until the end and didn't walk off in a huff) :)

Given their songs tend to be ballad-y, I can imagine that in future 'general audience' concerts, sing a few lively covers to get the gig started, then alternate between fast frenetic covers and the slow original ballads. As time goes by, they can probably start doing more specialised concerts focussing more on the original ballads. Eventually they may be able to make a steady secondary source of income from concerts and iTunes sales.

So going with your vignette idea.

I think it just cries out for it in the next chapter. I know there's a lot of balady stuff in their original stuff but I'm going to try to write some rock and girly rock tunes too. You're very much spot on with how things might work with how they might do their music. Angel's looking at using the online stuff to give them a boost. It's really changed how music happens now in a lot of ways.

So good it hurts...

When I got done sniffling, it occurred to me: Secret Agent Man (Johnny Rivers), My Best Friend is Hot (The Dollyrots), Ever Fallen In Love (with someone you shouldnt) (The Buzzcocks) and of course Is She Really Going Out With Him (Joe Jackson).

Mee-ow!

...just sayin'...

Bailey you so rule.

More songs are always good Mischief:)

I'm so glad that you liked the story so far and really will have to look at the songs that you mentioned. "My GF's Hot." is on my list. But "Secret Agent Man" would be a great tune that Brooklyn would like. I'll have to look at the others.
Thanks for the great comments.

The music choices are something else

Gwendolyn's picture

I find the music choices in this story amazing. I have always hated typical song fics. They never seemed to read right to me. This however, like the cartoon that inspired the name, works amazingly well. Loved Raven's song to Angel. Though, the visuals of the song she played to Summer were pretty cool too. ;)

Thanks Gwendolyn:)

I've always thought the songs in the story should fit the location and the mood as well as the characters. I really liked the song choices too but took my time with them. Raven's song was good to write it's giving me some practice to write the stuff that Raven would be writing.
I'm glad that you liked this, thanks for the great comment.

Damn, Bailey!

Another great chapter in one of the three serials of yours that I'm following.

Love what you're doing with the music for them. Being a bit of a Canadian music collector/hound, if you were looking for power songs you might look at Carole Pope/Rough Trade with something like "High School Confidential", there's two or three Guess Who songs I could think of that would fit them like "No Sugar Tonite/New Mother Nature"; if you were thinking ballad like - there's the Hometown Band's "Flyin" or Janis Ian's "Seventeen".

Yes, I admit it, I'm a Canadian Music geek! And yes, I turned on the Wayback machine to come up with those.....mind you I bought the original LP's of all of those when they were first released, too! And yes, I have quite the collection of Canadian stuff.

Keep up the fabulous writing my dear. I have to admit that as well as simply enjoying a great story, having it set in many places I have actually been to is an added bonus that I treasure - in large part because you have captured the essence of a lot of small town Canada, and I feel like I am being transported back to some of those places. And there is something very special about a lot of those people, particularly the small town down easters or the little prairie towns that still dot the landscape.

Keep it up!

Wow thanks Kate:)

I like The Guess Who, and Rough Trade but I agree that there's just something great about our great country. And some of our music is just awesome. I got a few things planned in both ballads and girly rock and just plain rock and roll. Though your comment made me think of a great tune that I'll just have to write in somewhere. I think Angel/Jase would do "Life in a Northern Town." really well.

Here I am, Bailey, reading this only two years late,

but, geez, it's effing brilliant, and I'm sure that once you end it I'll want to come back and read it in it's entirety! It's wonderful chapter by chapter or section by section, but like Robert B. Parker, or W.E.B Griffin, you deserve to be read in one sitting. This is astounding!

Thank you,

Toddy Bear

2 years is never too late Toddy Bear:)

And when it's finally done I'll likely be re-reading it too.

Billie Holiday is a great song Gwen Brenner:)

And a song about such a comparison to be written and sung to a music buff like Angel...Swoon:)

I love this story so much I'm having to force myself o stop every few chapters and take a break

I have to wonder

given these wonderful original lyrics of yours, have you ever thought of getting them published and seeing if someone would record them? I would absolutely love to be able to hear them set to music.
