I learnt something about flatworms the other day and it spawned this idea. Deeper research suggests that what I learnt wasn't entirely true, but then I suspect that the same can be said for pretty much all the other science references here. Hopefully you'll enjoy the story even so... |

Happily Ever After
Happily Ever After
by Maeryn Lamonte
It started with the birth of a long awaited child. Then there was a blessing – or to be more precise three blessings – then a curse, then a spell, then somewhere along the line another birth – well four actually, but one that stood out. What happened next was... well it's easier of you read it for yourselves. I was going to do this in instalments, but then I though why bother. Here it is. All of it. Enjoy (I hope).
Oh yes, in case any of you has a less than pristine mind and a limited grasp of English vocabulary, a muff was a sort of tube of fur used to keep young lady's hands warm long before it was that other thing

I just rediscovered this. I wrote it as part of the Melanie Ezell challenge, but then went a little further than the end point here and got lost. It also didn't quite match the challenge which was 'Strong Of Will, Stout Of Heart' – forced femme with a strong willed victim. This almost fits the bill, but not quite.

Charlie's been invited to a stag party at a casino. He's been given a hundred pounds worth of chips to gamble away as he likes, but he's really not interested.
Then he meets an attractive young woman with startling green eyes. Maybe she'll change his luck, but how much? There's a bit of crude language in this one, but other than that no caution necessary – unless of course you're allergic to controversy. I think I may have found a hornet's nest in this one and poked it with a stick. I'm looking forward to the comments on this one and hoping I don't upset anyone too much. Scratch that earlier comment on the word count. MS Word put the initial value at just over 10,000 and I've since managed to bring the number down to 9,996. |

Silver Lining
|
Silver Lining by Maeryn Lamonte In a world where population, poverty and crime are spiralling out of control, the future looks bleak. Given the choice would you elect to live in the real world as it fell into chaos around you, or would you take the opportunity to live out the remainder of your life in a virtual paradise. Of course there may be some additional benefits to taking the virtual option... |
Toymaker
|
Toymaker by Maeryn Lamonte Caution with this one – Hopefully the picture will give you some clues that it's not entirely wholesome in places. This one's a little bit horror. It's also more science fantasy than science fiction, so please don't get on my case about how impossible it all is. Todd Rains has just arrived on a frontier world, looking for a place he can breath without being told when and where he's allowed to, but there's something a little off with this world. Is it the paradise he's been looking for or has he jumped out of the frying pan into a very hot fire? |

Gregory's Gift by Maeryn Lamonte My brother Greg has had a sadness about him for longer than I can remember, especially at Christmas. He listened for a moment, but there were no sounds from the other side of the wardrobe. The door gave with a quiet click when he pushed on it, allowing him to slip out unnoticed. All sorts of strange thoughts flew around like so many songbirds in the garden of his mind, and he ran off to find his brothers before one of them jumped up and frightened him again. |

Melanie Ezell's big closet ultimate writer's challenge Team player and Mystery Science Closet Any similarity between characters in this story and people, either living or dead, is purely coincidental. Honest. Also apologies to anyone who actually understands what American Football is really about. I have to confess it's all a bit strange and I may have got things wrong here and there. Thanks to those of you who commented on my terminology and content. I've made the easy changes (word swapping), the rest will take a bit longer. Mel – now Melanie – Baron is transitioning, in fact her family just moved to to a small town so she could do so in peace. Only her father is the coach for the football team, and none of the try outs can throw a ball as far or as accurately as Mel. If they're going to have any chance at all in the State League, Mel is going to have to step up. |

Nearnia – The Line Which Was In The Wardrobe Addendum by Maeryn Lamonte It's raining. Lucas is bored. He finds and old wardrobe and steps into it, and we all know that magical places can be found at the back of old wardrobes.

The hospital and courtroom scenes depicted in this chapter are fictional and bear little or no resemblance to real life (as far as I'm aware). Warning: This chapter deals with Richard's time in the mental hospital and may be disturbing to some readers. The chapter has been printed in red and there is a short synopsis at the end to cover the basics and maintain continuity in the story should you prefer not to read the full thing. Barely ten minutes after being locked up, the key turned again and I was led out of the cell and the courthouse, and handed up into the back of an ambulance, where I was made to lie down on the stretcher. A couple of burly male nurses sat in with me, intimidating enough to keep me in my place simply by looking at me, and we drove off for destination unknown. There was no urgency so we shuffled through the lunchtime traffic at the same frustratingly slow pace as everyone else. |

The courtroom scene depicted in this chapter is fictional and bears little or no resemblance to genuine legal proceedings (as far as I'm aware). Sensing something wrong I looked up to see three very grim faces looking at me from over where Mr Talbot was holding a rather official looking piece of paper. “What’s the matter?” I asked. Paul held up the letter in his hand. “This is I’m afraid Richard. It’s an injunction instructing me to deliver you to the county court nearest your home town, where your parents have dictated that you should undergo an assessment to ascertain the state of your mental health. The court appearance is for tomorrow at noon.” |
