A different kind of success

As a former athlete (2x national champion as a hwt. wrestler and undefeated internationally in Greco-Roman) I am constantly watching numbers. Athletes love numbers. How quick did I get my first points, what was my average time of pin-fall, how many points did I get on average. That continued over to my writing career; how many sales, how many review, average review score.

Seriously Critiqued

I think I mentioned it here, but I know I definitely mentioned it on Facebook. After all the hubbub of the bad review, I received an email from a pastor in Teaneck New Jersey (oh the imagery that comes to mind) who wanted permission to mention my work The Transsexual and the Cross in a blog. I never have issues with that and thought it was nice that he asked. Well, I assumed it was going to be a paragraph or two. It's a few pages and pretty much is a detailed outline of my book. Here is what I posted on FB about it:

Does Katie Leone write good smut?

I don't know where my stories come from. I really don't. I just sit back and all of a sudden something will hit me. Usually I'm glad it's not a fist or a brick, but it's really passive. Now, I've been writing stories since I was 8 years old. I remember in the 4th grade I would be allowed to stand in front of class and read my creations and I thought that was a hoot. Back then I really wanted to do an alien abduction, but never did (Actually I did but I can't find it).

My cat died

Several months ago I was posting stories about my cat Madeline. She was the one who got paralyzed at the back legs. She made a recovery, almost back to new (except that she wouldn't jump great distances any more and no longer went on the roof).

A month ago we found out she had scabies. No big deal. A little medicine and a bath in sulfer shampoo cleared that right up.

Writing smut

For the most part, I've avoided writing any graphic sexual content. It's not that I don't think that there is a place for it, just not in my writing. Mostly it's been because I write about kids and that's just icky and wrong. In the past if I wrote anything sexual it was to show the true horrors of sexual abuse and was never intended to be for arousal.

Is there interest?

So, before I tackle another major novel I am writing a smaller piece (which will soon get away from me and be a mid sized novel). But, is there any interest in this community to see a mtf/ftm romance. I am currently working on one, but mostly it's so Felix doesn't feel left out of my writing (which he doesn't read anyway, so that goes to show how good of an author I am, I can't get my own BF to read my work).

Saved a ton of money on SRS

I always thought that Sexual Reassignment Surgery would be out of reach for me because of the cost. Thankfully that problem was solved and I was able to get a majority of the surgery done at no cost at all. Thanks to my job, while delivering the papers last night I froze my balls off. Now, I'm half way there.

Brr.

I'll be here all week.

Taking my leave

I know that there are some who are concerned about me and really care. As I often do, I will be taking my leave from the site for a while. Unless something major happens or I will the Nobel Prize for transgender literature, I will have nothing much to offer for a while. I am going to be starting on my next story sometime in the beginning of January. I plan on making Growing Up Jenny into a paperback as well after a major overhaul.

Just to give you a heads up of what is planned for 2014:

Car accident

So on Black Friday I bought myself a Prius. It was silver. Now it's denty. I hit a deer. Bumper no long bumps, hood no longer covers engine, radiator bleeding some weird red liquid. My neck and back hurt. No airbags deployed. Geico needs me to get a police report and I don't know who to contact for the Florida Highway Patrol. Not happy.

For animal lovers: The deer lived, but I hope it gets eaten by a hungry rabbit.

Dickens? Seriously?

I heard this comparison twice in the last two days and by two completely different unattached people talking about two different stories, one not even a member of the transgender community. I've heard this comparison before as well and I wonder if there is credence to it. I figured I would bring it up here and hopefully people will weigh in on the matter.

I have been, on occasion, compared to Charles Dickens.

There, I said it.

What do our stories say about us

Ever since I sat down and decided that I was going to give being a published author a try, I have been very conscientious about the choices that I make and what I put down on paper. I know I am only a self published author using technology to my advantage, but certain questions should be raised.

What is transgender literature saying about the community as a whole?

Are you happy with the message?

How do you feel about terms like Sissy, Tranny, Shemale, Ladyboi, Slut, Bimbo?

Do you think the majority of stories accurately represent your struggles?

gauging interest

I'm taking a straw poll. Would anyone be interested in an audio version of my books. The ones I'm thinking of are God Bless the Child (the whole trilogy), Wrestling Against Myself, and Unreachable. I don't want to start the process if there isn't interest.

Balancing act

There is quite the balancing act going on with my new post: Unreachable. It seems that there are some who are really enjoying the story and I wish I could just throw it all up at once, but it really is too long (180k+ words). Add on top of that that I'm selling it on Amazon and it leaves me in a bit of a lurch. Of course I want to sell books, it helps with the bills, but I also like sharing my creations as well. I also like reviews and comments and kudos in abundance.

Children's book update

It's been a while. A long while. But finally my illustrator is devoting a whole week to doing the drawings on the children's book "But I'm not a boy." There are two pictures already posted but this will be the complete thing. I've had others turn me down because the girly activity the main character wanted to do was too stereotypical. Oh well. Onward and Upward.

Sometiimes it is worth it

So here I am, watching the read totals pile up on Unreachable but the kudos staying put and feeling sorry for myself. I tend to compare myself to others and how they are doing far more often than I should.

So I do what I normally do. I check other numbers: namely sales and reviews. For kicks, I go to goodreads and come across a review that leads to a link that leads to a greater review. All I can say is WOW!!!! Did they give me the royal treatment and I didn't even ask.

I wanted to share the link out of courtesy and maybe those who get ebooks can look at other reviews.

The next step

So I'm sitting here debating whether or not I should post the unreachable on the site. The problem, it's long.... really really really (don't make me write it 100 times) long. It comes in at 185k words. The transgender part doesn't show up until 150k words in. So I'm wondering if I should or would people think it a big waste of time.

End of the line

I just posted the last of God Bless the Child and published Unreachable. That is going to be it for me. It has been a great ride. I had some laughs, shed some tears, but I'm really not cut out to be an author. I don't have what it takes and it has become obvious. There is a certain level of attention to detail to produce a good story, and I don't have that ability. It is more than just not getting reads and comments and kudos and reviews.

New Book Available

I am pleased to announce the release of my new book "Unreachable". It may be my best story yet and considering God Bless the Child and Finding Jenny, I think that is saying something. There isn't the religious overtones like there were in Wrestling Against Myself, so it should appeal to all.

New Novel Update

As some of you may or may not know, I've been working extremely hard on the next great trans novel. It is a good story, about a middle school teacher and a troubled student with a panache for misbehaving. They butt heads in the beginning of the book until the teacher realizes the kid is harboring a secret and his tough guy image is just a facade to keep people from finding out the truth about him.

Going mainstream is hard

When I wrote God Bless the Child way back in 2002 my goal was to write a mainstream story that gave some insight to the plight of a transsexual. The story, which few would doubt is gripping, reads like a Lifetime- made for tv (good pun)- movie (still waiting on the deal).

About the TV experience

Yesterday I got interviewed on Transition TV on the NotStr8 television station (now available on Roku). I will post the link as soon as I get it. After the show goes live, they edit and then post a cleaner version.

Being interviewed was quite interesting. Part of me wonders if I am playing make believe with some of the stuff that's been happening in my life. I feel I backdoored my way into the interview, but I guess I'm okay with that.
