This one started as an entry to the Feb 2016 Crush Mini-Competition. The name came from the game (a former, temporary addiction) but the game has nothing to do with the story. As happens on occasions, the story kept growing, and I was only half way through when the competition deadline went whistling past. I persevered though.

I actually thought I hadn’t finished it, so it was a little surprise, when I dug it out earlier today, to find that it was complete, albeit that most of it seemed to have been written on my phone, which meant that parts were all but unreadable, thanks to the Autokorrect Nazis in my former piece of junk. For that, and many other reasons, I will never be tempted to buy a Widows phone again.

Anyway, I’ve spent an enjoyable day reacquainting myself with this little piece, and fixing (I hope) most if not all of the buggerups. I hope you all find it just as enjoyable. Please share your thoughts and feelings at the end. Remember, it takes twenty-six muscles to frown, four to smile, and only one to click on that comment button (then maybe one or two more to add some text). I really love hearing from you. Private messages are good if you want to stay anonymous.

Here’s another, shorter one that’s been waiting for me to get round to finishing it. I’ve always wanted to have a go at one of these. Hope I’ve done the genre justice.
I haven’t done much proofing on this one, so if you spot any glaring mistakes, please PM me and I’ll make the necessary adjustments.

Hopefully this isn’t too soon after the Grenfell Tower disaster to seem disrespectful. I actually started writing it a year ago, and only picked it up to try and finish it a few months back. Then a lot of people died in London and I put it back on the shelf with all the many unfinished stories I seem to have generated recently. I feel I need to get something published again though, and I hate having all these loose ends floating about in my life. I have one story that’s just topped 200,000 words with a couple of chapters to go, which I’m hoping to finish this summer. Haven’t decided what I’m going to do with that yet, but in the meantime, I’d love to hear what you think of this one.

Mind Rider

Mind rider

Where does one person end and another begin? Usually not a difficult question to answer as each mind is confined to the brain it inhabits, but as our ingenuity enables us to overcome the barriers nature would impose on us, so we discover there are unforeseen consequences.

Nietzsche famously said that when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. I'm not sure this is what he meant by it, but it fits. Physics predicts that you can't observe something without changing it, and as you exert an influence on it, so it responds by exerting one on you.

Not in any way a Valentines story, but it's finished, so it might as well go up.

Lara Croft – The True Origin

Lara Croft – The True Origin
by Maeryn Lamonte

There was a point, when I was browsing the Summer 2015 vacation Getaway contest entries a few weeks back, that I came across a link to DarkKitten’s Entertainment Retro-Game contest, and it sparked off an idea. It wasn’t until some time later that I realised that DarkKitten’s contest was for last year. Even so, I liked the idea enough that I decided to finish the story. It would have been cool to be part of last year’s competition, but no matter, here is another offering from the Girl Inside. Hope you enjoy.

This is a piece of fan fiction. It is in no way intended to add or detract from the actual games and stories put across regarding Lara Croft, despite the confusion that already exists on her back story. The characters depicted in the story are purely fictitious, and any resemblance to individuals, either living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

For anyone new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

Lots of stuff happens, largely involving a magic bowl capable of switching people’s minds into each other’s bodies. After a lot of complicated tooing and froing, Laura (white hat) is in Jerry’s body where she belongs, Jerry (also white hat) is in Tony (black hat)’s body, Tony (black hat, remember) is in Danny (off-whitish hat)’s body, and Danny is in Laura’s body (where Jerry wants to be).

All the bowls have been damaged, rendering them useless, Jerry’s been arrested for all the nasty things Tony’s done, Danny’s going nuts because he can’t envisage being a girl for the rest of his life, and Tony is being kept in hospital temporarily under the mental health act.

Laura has been looking for solutions, and, with the help of a couple of old ladies who seem to know more about the bowls than she does, she has managed to find all the pieces of all the broken bowls, including a chip from one which was damaged over a year before – this being turned into a piece of jewellery by Tony’s ex-wife.

The old ladies, Doris and Millie, attempt a piece of magic to put everyone back in their right bodies, and everything seems to go right except for Jerry who’s being assaulted by fellow inmates, and seems to have his consciousness snagged on something in Tony’s brain. He loses consciousness while attempting able to pull himself free.

Despite the cautions, most of this one's fairly tame (apart from the language). It does end rather abruptly though, and in my original version, it gets quite graphic. I've written two versions of the final short section. The tame one comes first, so if you want the full experience, skip to the red paragraphs when the warning comes up. If you're sensitive to unpleasantness, please don't read the red paragraphs at the end.

For anyone new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

So magic bowls and mind swapping. If you need me to go through all the details, you should probably start from the beginning.

At present, Jerry – good guy – is stuck in the body of Tony – bad guy – and has been arrested for stuff he didn’t do. He’s currently in prison and being treated pretty shabbily by his fellow inmates. Danny – okay guy – is stuck in Laura’s body and hating it, as he would much prefer to be in his own very big, very muscular, very male body. Which is currently being inhabited by Tony – bad guy – who’s happy enough to be there as long as he can persuade the hospital to let him go, the rest of the Scooby Gang having succeeded in getting him sectioned. Finally, Laura – good guyette (originally) – is in Jerry’s body (and happily so, as long as she can sort out the mess with Jerry (love interest) and Danny).

All the magic bowls used for mind swapping have been damaged and are apparently somewhere between useless and dangerous. A couple of old ladies, named Doris and Millie, may have an idea on what can be done, but they need all three damaged bowls in order to make it work.

Laura has all three, but unfortunately, having examined them all, Millie has just told Laura, that there isn’t anything she can do.

So here’s the thing. I’ve decided to post on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. I think I, like, already told you that. Yeah? Well, like, if you post enough comments, I’ll like totally probably post the next one sooner.

Have a great day ;)

Don’t forget to visit my website at www.metamorph.org.uk, although to be honest, you won’t find much there that isn’t already here. It’ll just make me feel better.

For anyone new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

Jerry Goodman has discovered he likes being a girl, and the girl he likes being, Laura Townsend, has decided she likes being Jerry. Which is just as well, as the magic bowl which was used to change them into each other has been broken.

Except that Laura found someone who has one just like it.

Worried that Jerry’s being influenced by the female hormones he now possesses, Laura persuades him to switch back, if only for the week the bowl requires them to be each other.

Unfortunately, Tony Ward – the bad guy who stole Laura’s bowl and changed them into each other in the first place – gets wind of the newly discovered bowl, and steals it from its owner, nearly killing her in the process.

He then uses the bowl to switch bodies with Laura, then again to switch Laura’s body with a bouncer named Danny Morton, who he then blackmails into helping him. The two succeed in subduing Jerry and Laura, but when they set a trap for Tony’s three former cronies – now loyal to Jerry and Laura – things go wrong for Tony because they know Danny’s weakness.

Tony (as Danny) is admitted to hospital and held their under the mental health act. Danny (in Laura’s body and pretending to be his own girlfriend !?(what?)) keeps an eye on him while Jerry (in his own body, though he wishes he wasn’t) goes and collects the bowl from where Tony left it, in Danny’s mum’s house.

Laura (in Tony’s body) hides out until midweek, when Jerry manages to persuade her to switch with him. He (now as Tony, remember – come on keep up; it’s not that complicated is it?) then disguises himself as a woman (or at the very least, as a dedicated cross-dresser) in order to sneak into Tony’s hospital room, where Tony (as Danny) manages to smash this bowl – thought to be the last one in existence.

Jerry (as Tony) is arrested by police who have been tailing him, Laura and Danny. Danny (still as Laura) collapses in hysterics (the not funny kind) when he realises he’s now stuck as a woman for good. Laura (as Jerry – so at least one thing’s going right) collects the bits of the bowl before the police ask her to ‘help them with their enquiries’ - not arresting her you understand.

There follows a short trial in which Jerry pleads guilty to Tony’s crimes, despite the efforts of Paul Burrows, engaged by Laura to keep him out of prison. Jerry is led away to his life behind bars, and ends up in three fights within the first twenty four hours.

He gets to enjoy (?) a short period of peace and quiet in solitary, but when he’s released, Bambi (the prison sodomite) decides to take Jerry for a walk on the wild side, all completely without Jerry’s consent.

So anyway, I finally managed to finish the last chapter, and it ended up being three times as long as all the others. So, it seemed sensible to me, to divide it up – especially since there seem to be a couple of halfway decent “tune in next week for the thrilling continuation of…” moments. So if all the chapters suddenly change to reflect there being a total of 12, don’t be alarmed. I’ll continue posting Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings (or thereabouts. I’m travelling at the moment, so not sure what time’s when) until we’re done.

Don’t forget to visit my website at www.metamorph.org.uk, although to be honest, you won’t find much there that isn’t already here. It’ll just make me feel better.

A word of warning. This is where if starts to get nasty. I've tried not to be too graphic about the really unpleasant bits, but if this sort of thing is likely to upset you, please take care about whether or not you read on (at least until the whole story is posted.)

For anyone new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

Jerry Goodman and Laura Townsend have swapped lives – no literally. They didn’t plan on it, but a crook named Tony Ward stole a magic bowl from Laura and was trying to use it to steal Jerry’s wealth when Laura messed things up. In the ensuing confusion Jerry and Laura switched bodies and the bowl was broken.

The two lived happily together for about a year until Laura managed to find another working bowl and switched them back so that Jerry could make a decision about which life he wanted to live, but as the original him, so not influenced by the inherited oestrogen.

Unfortunately, Tony gets wind of this new bowl, and before the two lovers can change back, he steals it and starts using it to mess with people’s lives. He assaults the owner of the bowl, then steals it and uses it to switch places with Laura. He further complicates matters by switching with a large man named Danny, who’s more than a little upset to find himself suddenly living life as a pretty young woman.

Jerry and his friends manage to subdue Tony and recover the bowl. Jerry comes up with a plan to keep Tony (as Danny) subdued and Laura (as Tony) hidden until they can switch back.

Several days into the wait, Jerry swaps with Laura, relieving her of the stress of living as a man she hates. Jerry also comes up with an idea for how they can sneak himself in Tony’s body – wanted by the police – into a busy hospital. It involved a very large dress and a few other odds and ends.

Lifeswap (part 6 of 12)

For anyone new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

Jerry, the friendly and supportive banker (just so we know it’s fiction, right?) has been body swapped into Laura, a pretty but only modestly successful antiques dealer, by a series of events initiated by Tony, a more successful but less honest antiques dealer, using an ancient, magical bowl he stole from Laura in the first place.

Tony’s plans are diverted by Laura’s intervention, so that instead of losing his wealth and livelihood to an unscrupulous individual, Jerry ends up losing his wife (a seriously unpleasant cow who divorces him for apparently having an affair with Laura) and his position at the bank (when the board ask him to step down to avoid the scandal and potential danger to the bank from the divorce).

Jerry and Laura, rather unusually fall in love with one another (as each other which also seems to fit their preferences – also just as well since the bowl was damaged and can't change them back). They set up in business together dealing antiques with Jerry’s money and new-found female intuition for what will sell, and Laura’s equally newly discovered male pragmatism and her already extensive knowledge of the ancient and valuable.

On their first anniversary, Laura takes Jerry out into the countryside where they meet Doris Maxwell, owner of the last working bowl (as far as they know). She changes them back into their original bodies, since Laura’s practical male side believes Jerry can only make a fair decision on how he wants to live if he can do so as his old self. Reluctantly he agrees to this course of action.

Tony, meanwhile, has just been released from prison (where he was sent for fencing stolen goods). He pays Jerry and Laura a visit, works out that they’ve managed to switch back, and, through his preferred violent, criminal approach, gains the location of the newly discovered bowl and steals it from Doris.

Bent on revenge, he breaks into Jerry and Laura’s house and switches bodies with Laura, then, a while later, tricks an impressively built local bouncer named Danny Morton into swapping further.

Tony (as Danny) and Danny (as Laura and temporarily on Tony’s side until he gets his body back) waylay Jerry and Laura in their shop. Tony wants everyone who ruined his life to suffer before he goes on to make himself rich and ruin more lives, so he forces Jerry to call in Tony’s three former cronies – now working for Jerry and Laura and on Tony’s blacklist – to come in so he can use the bowl to bring them a bit of misery. He doesn’t count on their resourcefulness though, and, aware from childhood friendship that Danny has an allergy to nuts, they use this to subdue Tony.

Jerry then comes up with a plan to reclaim Doris’s bowl from where Tony has left it at Danny’s mum’s house, and to put Tony on ice until they can make use of it to put everything back the way it should be.

Lifeswap - part 5 of 12

Lifeswap (part 5 of 12)

by Maeryn Lamonte

Copyright © 2014 Maeryn Lamonte - All Rights Reserved.

For anyone new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

Jerry Goodman and Laura Townsend have been happily living as each other since a dishonest antiques dealer friend of Jerry’s, a man named Tony Ward, used a magic bowl to switch them. Since the bowl was damaged in the incident, they believe they don’t have any option about changing back, until Laura (as Jerry) discovers anther bowl and arranges for the two of them to visit its owner.

Somewhat against Jerry (as Laura)’s better instincts, the two switch back (so that Jerry can make a decision about how he wants to live as his true self). Things are uncomfortable from the moment they do so, but the nature of the magic won’t permit them to undo the change for at least a week. They head home, intending to make the best of things until they can go back to the way they’ve found they prefer.

Tony, recently released from prison, pays Laura and Jerry a visit and picks up enough clues from their behaviour to realise something has changed. He assaults one of the couple’s employees, breaks into their shop, finds the location of the new bowl on their computer and steals it from its owner, brutally assaulting her on the way.

Blissfully ignorant of all this, Jerry and Laura experiment with ways of coping in their new (or rediscovered old) lives and end up having unprotected sex for the second time this story.

Learning of the break-in down at their shop, they go in to work and are interviewed by Inspector Peters, suggesting to him that perhaps Doris Maxwell, owner of the last surviving bowl, might be at risk from Tony Ward. The inspector sends officers to investigate, who arrive in time to save Mrs Maxwell’s life, but not to prevent the theft of the bowl.

Jerry and Laura visit Doris in hospital who asks them what they are prepared to do to stop Tony, and promises to do what she can when they tell her they will do whatever is necessary.

Back at the Goodman residence, the following morning Jerry wakes up to find Laura not in bed – not instantly disturbing given her insomnia. He heads downstairs where a surprise awaits him.

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, think I’ll go and eat worms. Seven comments and four pms. On the other hand, I had some pretty amazing ones on some of my older stories, and one or two on previous chapters of Lifeswap, so this posting is a little soner than it might have been…

Anyway, for those of you who’re new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

A year has passed since this all began. Jerry Goodman (a banker) and Laura Townsend (an antiques dealer) have had their consciousnesses switched by an acquaintance, Tony Ward (another antiques dealer, but a toe-rag who stole the magic bowl which makes this possible from Laura because he broke his own).

The fallout from the switch includes Jerry’s wife, Portia, suing for divorce, meaning that he has to sign all his wealth, shares and properties over to Laura (which is of course him anyway) in order to stop her getting her hands on it. This results in the bank shareholders calling for Jerry’s resignation, which he gives readily enough, leaving its future in the hands of three investors he trusts.

Sixteen comments and pms this time, bringing the delay down to three and a bit days. Come on you lovely people, I know you can do better.

Anyway, for those of you who’re new to Lifeswap, chapter one can be found here. For the rest of you, the story so far:-

Jerry Goodman, a banker, having been invited to a party held by Tony Ward, his antiques dealer, is invited to participate in a party game. What he doesn’t know is that the bowl in which he has just placed his keys is magical. Fortunately for him, Laura Townsend, another antiques dealer and the rightful owner of the bowl, comes along at that stage and adds her keys to the bowl.

The magic of the bowl causes Jerry and Laura’s consciousnesses to be switched, and in the ensuing confusion, the bowl is broken, Laura (now in Jerry’s body) picks Jerry (in Laura’s) up and escapes with him (her?) and the pieces of bowl.

So I prefer not to start publishing serials unless I'm pretty sure I can get them finished in a reasonable time, and life's been getting in the way of my writing quite a bit lately so I've waited till now to put this out there. Since I'm on the tenth and final part, I think it's a fairly safe bet that I'll finish this one before I'm ready to post the last chapter. Oh yeah, on that subject. I live for your comments, especially the thoughtful ones. The more comments I get, the quicker I'll post the next chapter (mwa ha ha ha ha ha - or something).

Additional information - I've put together a website for my stories at metamorph.org.uk. Lifeswap's not up there yet as BCTS is still the first home to my TG writing. It's still a work in progress, so please don't be too harsh with your comments. Also I'm thinking of self-publishing a few of my past stories, maybe on Lulu, unless someone can suggest somewhere better. I want the option for paper copies, not just ebooks. In that regard, I was wondering if anyone would care to proof some of my old stories, plus I wouldn't mind picking the brains of someone who's had some experience with self-publishing. PM me if you'd like to help.

Anyway - Jerry Goodman is a banker, but more of a George Bailey than some of the selfish shits in the world today. An acquaintance of his persuades him to play the sort of party game you only think is fun after you've had a few, and a little magic later, things get rather complicated. A word of caution, I've been a little uncontrolled in my use of language in this, and there is some violence and sexual abuse later in the story, in case that might put you off starting.

There's a bit of crude language in this one, but other than that no caution necessary — unless of course you're allergic to controversy.
