Chapter Eight

Far, far away, at the edge of known space, an EarthForce expedition makes the incredible, unbelievable discovery that could rock modern Federation life to its foundations: apparently, the Earthers' magical Phase-Wave technology wasn't infinite nor universal, which puts into question a lot of the assumptions that Federation science had made about what the universe was, and how it works.

Also, beyond the boundary of Phase-Wave, the same expedition finds a weird new planetary system, which included three planets which were in what Earthers called the "Goldilocks zone" of the system - the area of space around a star that had just the right conditions for life to flourish. There were two problems with these planets: the three went around their star in the same precise orbit. And they were all frozen. And they shouldn't have been frozen.

And then, on the one they called Terra Dracones, they find an ancient structure under the ice that contained Earther and Elyran statues.

Prologue

Hi. My name is Sam Spaulding, police Lieutenant with Brooklyn 99... I mean the 99th precinct of the New York city police. Or was, anyway. I was happy with my life. Well, happy-ish, anyway.

So. Bobbie was still at work. It was August 26 already - just a few minutes after midnight. Back home in the States, it would be just past noon of August 25. Great. Just enough time.

Bobbie had hurried to wrap her once-a-month Sunday morning videoconference with the company's higher-ups scheduled for the last Sunday of the month (so no employees would be around), but since Bobbie was on the other side of the world, that meant it was Monday evening for her, and since they usually extended these meetings to just before noon, for them that is, then...

Normally, she wouldn't have minded, and her wife of over six years was understanding and knew these once-a-month meetings get extended all the time, but this was a special Monday for Bobbie - it was her tenth-year anniversary as a member in her favorite site, BigCloset Topshelf, and she wanted to post something on the site to commemorate this "momentous" occasion (she giggled at her use of the word), but she hadn't written it yet. That was why she was antsy, and was waiting impatiently for the meeting to end, so she could start writing it.

And It Hardly Even Feels Like Ten Years

 
Exactly, and I do mean exactly,ten years ago, on a Tuesday afternoon, at 2:33PM, I posted my very first story here in the BigCloset (or what I've taken to calling "BCTS"): I posted the first part of a little story I called "Danny." And it is exactly ten years from that time.

Yes, indeed - it's my tenth-year anniversary here in BCTS.

I just posted a new chapter for one of my stories - a relatively long one this time. And though I know it's past 11PM out there, I hope it's not too late.

I've been in the office since 8am, and have been waiting to meet with some contractors. I've been waiting for three hours now, and they're still not here. Anyway, while I waited, I started writing instead of sitting here and stewing. If they don't get here in 20 minutes, I'm gonna be calling their boss. This doesn't bode well for them being hired for the project.

So Danny got convinced to actually go for the meeting with the fashion house in Minneapolis-St. Paul as Robin, with Sally accompanying him. Robin also finally became a real paper person, complete with a Social Security number, a taxpayer's ID, a passport, a birth certificate, a school transcript and everything that Robin would need. The only downside was that he would need to start paying income tax. That and having the family name "Tibbles." (Seriously? Tibbles?)

And when they came back home, "Robin" let everyone know that "she" and Sally were now official models for Blumenfeld House. Whoa!

Morgan, Jerry and the others got part-time jobs to run the station's new website, and they posted the station's new posters on the site. Bootleg copies of their posters started to crop up all over school and in town. This causes a big stir and the band and the station got more fans. And, as the new website went from strength to strength, everyone got lot of email. One of these was for Robin - an offer for her to some modeling for a fashion house. Whuuut?

So the posters turned out great, and Danny signed each of the first run's copies personally before being distributed to the station's Official Partner companies. But he worried about what was happening to Janet. After another talk with Dr. Roberts, he tried to stay away from his friends for fear of them being hurt by Janet again. Tracey convinced him to at least tell them why he was keeping away.

Tracey comes up with a new gimmick to keep growing the station, which necessitated making up advertising posters. Naturally, the gang gets recruited as Tracey's models. But on the final day of the poster shoots, Janet showed up again and hit Tracey and Jerry with her car this time.

So, the famous Katie Hargraves gave the gang a bunch of Rockrgrrl and PIMA vouchers, and everyone thought of going to the nearest branch to use them, but the nearest ones were over three hours away. So they thought of making road trip of it. But since it was late already, they decided to have a sleepover first, and get an early start the following Sunday. (BTW, be warned: this is one of those rare chapters with very explicit sexual content.)

Chapter Seven

The conference had started, and, everyone got to know everyone else. There were representatives from the Arachnians, the Dixx, and, of course, the Elyrans. Humanity's newest friends, the bear cub-like Telcontari, had also sent representatives, as well as the Daemons, the ones that look like lions with their long, thick manes, but what was not expected were the people of Star-453 sending representatives. These particular aliens were considered the most technologically advanced race in the Federation - all their citizens were completely cyberneticized at birth, and all that everyone sees are their roboticized outer shells. If people didn't know any better, they'd probably assume these were actually sentient robots.

And, of course, there were the Humans.

The conference was all about the discovery that the Earthers made - that, apparently, Phase-Wave wasn't as never-ending as they thought, that there was an actual border to it. And, at the border where Phase-Wave ended and the unknown part of the galaxy started, the Fifth Fleet's Explorer-Class DSC Earthship II, and their most advanced Type-One ship, DSC Mikasa, discovered a new planetary system.

The new system was weird, to say the least, but what was discovered on one of its planets held the promise of new knowledge and something that was indeed world-shaking.
