A SOLITARY PATH

As I Walk’d By Mysel

by Robert Burns.

As I walk’d by myself, and talk’d by myself,

Myself said unto me:

Look to thyself, take care of thyself, For nobody cares for thee

I answer’d myself, and said to myself,

In the self same repartee:

Look to thyself, or not look to thyself

The self same thing will be!

Behold Good Ang, a sonsie character…

Rhona McCloud's picture

Stood by the wall a 10-speed-racer
To outstrip any wicked chaser
And when she reached the River Clyde
She knew in her own bed she’d bide
The cyber swarm hate running water
They’d rather lumber Auld Nick’s
daughter

Long, long ago ...

... in a distant galaxy called Ayrshire I was wont to stay with a friend's parents in Alloway. His dad would recite Tam o' Shanter at the drop of a hat (even if you caught it before it hit the floor).

Apart from snatches of the longer poems, all I know of Burns is

Kirk and state may join and tell
To do such things I mauna
But kirk and state may gang to hell
And I'll gang tae ma Anna

To a mouse

I' m truly sorry Mans dominion
Has broken Natures social union,
An' justifies that ill opinion
Which makes thee startle,
At me, thy poor, earth bound companion,
An fellow-mortal!

'To a mouse' (1786)

This could also apply to a dormouse.

A long-past Burns night

I went to a Burns dinner with a friend, and it was in the full (male) rig. Closest thing to a skirt I could get away with.

When we came back out, someone had smashed the passenger side window of her car to steal the radio. It was a very, VERY cold trip back!
