BC Is a Silly Place

Big Closet is a silly place.

At times it seems to lack common sense.

In a world where its users are under harsh political attack Big Closet steadfastly refuses to engage. The logic behind that decision is anything but foolish.

Yet this is a silly place. Defying all economic logic – Big Closet continues to try to exist on donations, knowing full well that a large share of its users are indigent. Big Closet knows that BECAUSE a large share of its users are indigent it MUST exist on donations because a fee-based site would not be able to serve them.

Big Closet focuses on its primary directive to be a friendly place to read, write, and discuss Transgender Fiction. Anything that gets in the way of that goal is quickly dispersed. At times the decisions made to stick to that prime directive seem silly. Yet Big Closet realizes the most salient word in its prime directive is “friendly.”

Many of the users of Big Closet have suffered severe trauma in their lives due to their trans lifestyle. Others have been mildly impacted. For some – years and years of abuse have left them bitter and defensive. They will lash out at anyone who is opposed to, or even indifferent about, their trans beliefs.

When people lash out at you, the silliness of this place will cause you to question if coming here is worth it. Lots of people have decided it is not. Some come back. Many do not.

For over a fourth of my 71 years, I’ve checked in at least once a day. And – I’ve asked myself on more than one occasion why in hell I put up with such silliness? Yesterday was one of those days. I made the remark yesterday that at 71, that I’m too old to be in junior high.

After my anger died down, about six hours after the incident occurred, I remembered why I love Big Closet.

Because it’s silly. Because it has a mission that matters to a very few. And, because to those few, its existence is foolishly important.

In order to accomplish its primary goal, Big Closet provides a nurturing place for people who need it. Sometimes – things get extremely grey. Sometimes people pretend to be something they are not. Sometimes people hurt other people and think that’s just the way things are and that people should forget and forgive. That’s damned silly. When I see something that looks like a repeat offense in the making, I’m not about to turn the other cheek.

Yesterday, people readily condemned me as insensitive. Hmmmmm. Outspoken, yes. Silly, yes. Disgusting, NEVER! Insensitive – only the ignorant would think that.

Silly

I really enjoy the balance between serious and silly here. There are a lot of stories that have a lot of really deep meaning, and then there are the Bru stories.

I try to keep my stories uplifting. I love a good happy ending. If you read one of my tales, you can rest assured that I'm not going to write something depressing.

But that doesn't keep my stories from being deep. In Journey to Humanity, Cara struggles with forgiving her father. In Higher and Higher>, Tina has to deal with a lot of issues, including death.

But I also like to write silly stories. Laika and I bounced silliness back and forth in our entries in the GLOO! writing challenge.

I made the remark yesterday that at 71, that I’m too old to be in junior high.

Our Sweet Sixteen girl was born in the fifties, and decided to return to high school. You can do the same in a few decades if you want. Her mother is busy living off the grid, since that has been her dream for a long time.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic about the timeline, and maybe I'm not. There are a number of people in the Science and Futurism group that agree, and a few that are even more optimistic.

Happy

But what is 'indigent'? Not a word I recognise or understand from context.

Silly and wonderful.

It never pays to take life too seriously, after all: you'll miss out on all the fun!

You continue to be one of my favorite people, Angie, because you're both super grounded and entirely too optimistic for your own good. Luckily for us, the results seem to speak for themselves.

*hugs*
