Somehow I have entered the Twilight Zone

Dia duit y'all,

So I believe I have entered some weird alternate reality where Rod Serling will suddenly start speaking in the background.

I'll give you a short history of the particular situation. My guardian so I have just been told has been sick a while and currently placed into a home by her daughters. All news to me, I recently got an email telling me I should visit her.

I don't really talk to her as I have been living up in DC working as a contractor for some time. I love Virginia and it paid well and I was many states away from 'those people'.

Recently, my company's contract was not picked up (it worked for the DoD for over twenty years, but you don't have to guess what happened) So instead I ended up moving back to where I used to live for a number of reasons. New job with the government and I have a number of good friends down here. I mentioned that I was now in the area.

Ok even with our history, I was given food, clothes and a place to stay. True her second husband threw me out of the house as soon as I turned 18 but that wasn't a big deal, and later I happily danced on his grave.

So I stop for a visit and I will say, she looked horrible. I didn't take any joy in it. She looked 100 years old and unfortunately can't remember much. She doesn't even know the names of her two husbands but what the heck, she remembered me? She cant remember what she had for lunch, me she knows. Suddenly, this woman excitedly introduces me to everyone on the floor and exclaimed what a wonderful child I was for visiting.

She showed them pictures, I didn't even know she had and acted well, just so not like herself. The woman who never showed me affection gave me hug. It was really really weird. At the end of the visit, she and all her new friends made sure I was welcome back anytime.

Just so weird.

One last thing, really the best part. Her oldest daughter, who I despise, is on the board of the home/hospital and pulled a bunch of strings to get her mother into a bed. I was told that she comes and visits however, my guardian doesn't remember her name and asked me if I could get her to stop visiting because she was annoying to be around.

Ok Rod you can some out anytime now.

I guess you some how made a more lasting positive impression.
Try to take joy in that you do seem too light up what time she has left.

Memory works in strange ways

You never know what happens when other memories get pared away, corrupted etc.

I’ve met fairly young folks (say early 60s) with brains that are definitely showing signs of deterioration and older folks in their 80s still sharp as a tack. I work in engineering and problem solving is great for keeping it sharp plus I know neither of my parents had premature dementia.

Luck of the genetic draw plus lifestyle choices can make a huge difference.

Edit: Now that you are not a contractor does this mean you have time to write?

Saw some of this

With my grandmother sadly, luckily she only lasted a month in that place. I sooooo never want to end up in one probably one of my biggest fears.
