I'm fast approaching the point where I'll have to decide how dark my story turns. Should I keep it lighter or explore a potentially much darker element that would affect the whole world's future?

even if not for the same reason. I got inspired by a comment Gerorge Sand put in one of her books: "La mare du Diable". Living in a time that continuously threatened to completely overturn everyones life once again (revolution), she stated that an artist's job was to keep pointing out the possibilities for good, as the rest of the population seemed hell bent on doing the opposite.

I found that point of view very inspiring and try to keep that theme going in my stories, even if I do not deny the existence of the other.

the other hand, there have been great dystopian novels, which, hopefully, enlightened many people!

As Much as I'd Prefer...

...the lighter alternative, I feel that I have to suggest that you go with the one that makes the most logical sense in the story context and the worldline.
