Okay so I'm fooling around with a story idea, and could use some feedback, Basic idea is a young heroine from a obscure "magical girl" manga which has been repackaged for an English speaking audience finds herself blown out of the pages of her book, into a place between stories, between universes. She now goes from universe to universe, story to story, trying to get "home". To make this idea extra awesome I'd like other authors' permission for her to visit their stories and interact with their characters as part of her journey,

Anybody wanna jump in?

Interesting...

Interesting...

you have a few characters who could be used just from your own universes. You can use any of mine, some chaos in Winnisimmet could be funny and I trust your abilities.

I'm told STFU more times in a day than most people get told in a lifetime

Sounds interesting

It puts me in the mind of Dr. Who as he travels from place to place. You could even make it so that the characters she interacts with forget that they ever met her. That would reduce the impact upon the universes that she visits, other than people asking who put the gaping hole in the side of that building.

I can see her visiting Whateley a few times.

Mundane universe would be my Gaby saga - in several volumes she and her friends/family visit cons so that would sort of fit in quite easily - the first volume is even called The Anime Days!
I think even Nena has had a brush with anime.

As long as it's made clear that it's fan fiction i've got no problem and look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Welcome

Daphne Xu's picture

You're welcome to use any of my stories. If your character goes to BB or interacts with one of BB's canonical characters (Grandmother, Anya), you might send the scene to Elrod (or Ellie Dauber) for approval.

Sounds like it could be fun

Feel free to use any of mine too :)

And I'll be happy to answer questions for things that haven't appeared in a story

We the willing, led by the unsure. Have been doing so much with so little for so long,
We are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Reminds me of...

both Sliders and Otherworld.

Interesting premises as it follows the formula of many shows of where either someone or one are trying to find a way home. The question that follows is what/how will they move between worlds and if its magic based what happens if they land of a place with no or little magic? Or how something such as a heavily based universe with science will help to move the individual OR individuals along.

Problem

Daphne Xu's picture

There of course is potentially a huge difference between "little magic" and "no magic". One could (potentially) arrive in the new Universe with "little magic" if one is traveling by magic. It's impossible to arrive by magic in a Universe with "no magic". Something about the trajectory is going to avoid the non-magic. Unless, that is, there's something akin to Newton's 1st Law in a region where there's still magic. The magic could disappear after establishing the trajectory, and one continues the trajectory in the region with no magic.

Imagine a door or portal -- on one side, the door can exist, but it can't exist on the other side. Or imagine quantum-tunneling from a quantum-mechanics Universe to a non-quantum-mechanics Universe.

I was just reminded of something I wrote about 19 years ago, as a late entry in Malinov's "Virtual Solstice Party": Virtual Solstice Party -- Six Months Late. I found myself in a series of Universes trying to find Dante's Cavern. (Unfortunately, it began with a "Funny Aneurysm" Moment -- shudder.) The rest of the thread continued here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.sex.stories.d/VS... -- very NSFW.

Well

There is the world itself. Even if there is little or no magic there is always the power of the supernatural that could be of use. Think of the Bermuda Triangle or the paranormal aspect of doorways that appear out of nowhere leading to somewhere.

Beware

Daphne Xu's picture

I haven't heard of the doorways, but I suspect they are urban legends. The Bermuda Triangle was a media hoax. For some disappearances attributed to the Bermuda Triangle, the accounts omitted recent storms. Other disappearances were elsewhere -- off the coast of Canada in one case, in Alaska in another case.

Clarke's Law

The first thing you would have to do is define what is "Magic?"

All the best fantasy writers will tell you the most important thing with having "Magic" in a story is to set the rules for your magic system works, (even if this is never explained to the reader). What is the source of the power used? How does your magic user "tap" into this power source? What steps must your magic user preform to channel this power into the desired outcome?

By defining your magic system you in fact, create your own "science" of magic in your story. Once you have done this it is but a small jump in faith to say it falls under the umbrella of "Clarke's Law" (Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic)

We the willing, led by the unsure. Have been doing so much with so little for so long,
We are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Thinking of this...

If a magic user visits another story universe where there is no magic, they might find themselves "repackaged" as a technology user. For example, a thief who uses magic tricks to help themselves might find after a "jump" to a computer-rich world that they have hacking skills.

Or the people in the tech world...

Would wonder how he or she can do whatever it is without the gizmo they use to do the same thing?

"How'd you do that without your Kiddle-hopper?"

"My what?"

"Your Kiddle-hopper, everyone has a Kiddle-hopper."

"I've never heard of a Kiddle thingy."

"Yeah right! What, is your like super secret miniaturized one that's not on the market yet? Is that why you won't tell me?"

We the willing, led by the unsure. Have been doing so much with so little for so long,
We are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

Or perhaps

It could be a small containment unit that might have need to be charged over hours or days before it could be used to open said gateway. A whatchamacallit thingumabob device. A non-descriptive device that gave no cause to be considered but could penetrate the energy needed around it as it drew in either in magic or converted electrical fields for its user.

Remember this doesn't have to be hard-boiled science or magic. Lets not get to bogged down with exclamations.

Darkin looked over the changed screwkinkle and noticed it now had a light strip. Going from red to amber it would later go to green an being able to push the button (which was locked). Having tried to use magic (s)he found they were even prevented from making fire on their fingers. Parts of their assembled gear had changed as well. A silver looking rectangle that opened 1/3 of the way up exposing a small wheel. When spun sparks jumped over an odd smell (after taking a close sniff) producing a flame. Gone was their orb used to create light or heat their food from the other realm.

Cool idea.

So far except my failed guardians (I need to do a rewrite to fix the pacing I screwed up) my ‘worlds’ are pretty mundane and real life...

It’s odd though my muse (the little witch) gave me an idea that’s similar a few weeks ago. Instead of the character coming out of the book, the main character gets sucked into one... Okay so I was watching some old music videos and A Ha’s Take on Me gave me the idea lol.

I know I’m weird. The fact that I’m trans is probably one of the more normal things about me.
