Overly optimistic

I really thought this would be the last part but much as I wanted to wrap up the story I underestimated how much I had left to tell. This time I won't claim Part 21 is the penultimate chapter. I hope it is but . . .

I know how you feel

I have written a number of stories that have turned out longer than expected. The worst was one I thought might stretch to 40 chapters only to end up 102 more than that. Not forgetting the unexpected side story that turned out to be six chapters instead of the planned five.

All I can say is, your story will be as long as it needs to be and will be all the better for being finished properly!

Same here

there I was thinking that 'Poppy and Me' part 2 was going to be 2-3000 words. In the end it turned out to be almost 11,500 words long. Hmmm perhaps I don't need to go on that short course 'Writing Longer Pieces' next weekend.

How many chapters

I don't even try to predict how far one of my stories will go. I just keep going until there is a good place to stop.

I remember teachers telling us that we need to outline everything. And programming teachers told us that we need to create a flow chart.

The programming thing actually makes sense, though I generally put a rough set of comments in, then start filling in the pieces.

Stories? I let the characters decide where it is going to go. It works better that way, and is less frustrating.
