I remember the story

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

It's quite long. It starts out with our heroine being a POW and performing in plays taking the women's roles and then in a mass escape (al la "The Great Escape") he/she is paired with another escapee as his wife. They hop on a train as it's leaving the station (not sure about that part but they end up on the train) and a woman traveling on the train gets shot and our heroine swaps IDs with her and the guy partner jumps off the train while it crosses a river.

The guy disappears and shows up later in the story while our heroine ends up going back to the town the train came from and becoming the girlfriend of a count or perhaps a baron who turns out to be gay. Through a long series of events our heroine ends up back in the states and is refused the chance to become a man again.

Can't remember the title. Perhaps with the added info someone else can.

Hugs
Patricia

Tanya Allan wrote a number of stories set in World Wars I and II that have a number of story elements that you described. None of them precisely match the description of your story. You could go onto Amazon Kindle and see if any the following books are the story you are looking for.

Behind The Enemy
Beginning's End
When Fortune Smiles
Fickle Fortune
Changed Fortune
Fortune's Soldier
Higher Than Eagles
A Wedding and Two Wars

Okay, I have a request people.
His parents are into sports big time. Mother a teacher, father coach. She was cheerleader he was football met in college married had twins both boys and another son. Youngest is NOT into sports. Football playoffs. Family is in basement den total football fanatics, father, mother, twin boys.
Son is upstairs drawing. Family comes up finds him drawing rather than engaged in their passion, sports. Family goes ape, father beats son threatens to punish him even more later. Everyone goes to bed. He gets up, raids his piggy bank, his father's safe and gets a gun. He is well experienced in camping. Packs up, gets his bicycle which is capable of "rail ridding" train tracks. Leaves home.
Family thinks he is sulking, leaves for school thinking he is in his room. Comes home, he's nowhere to be seen. He's must be in his room. Let him sulk. Next day they leave when they come home they think he may be at the mall. Close to midnight they finally realize he isn't home and isn't at the mall which had closed. Police alert but still no one realizes he is riding the rails covering close to eighty miles at night sleeping during the day.

"She" makes it to Florida, saves three kids from drug dealers, gets shot, hospital, APB finally catches up with her.

Now where is the story and who wrote it?????
hugs all

Hypatia Littlewings's picture

One that I have reread several times.

Weird title, however, it does make sense.
