Eating: My favorite pastime, or
"Does this make me look fat?"

(this is a Working Girl blog)

I didn't go with the girls in the office for lunch this afternoon. I begged off and made do with my favorite senbei rice crackers and a nice cup of tea in my little office.

No worries, though. Nothing amiss. In fact, when I checked yesterday, I was within my target ideal weight for my height n build (Yayyy!). Which got me thinking now about diet n stuff.

Prior to starting transition, I had to get checked out, and among the things they had to check was my weight. So I had to go through a diet and exercise regimen before being allowed. Anyway, I was able to hit it, and was able to go on. But that's not what I wanted to talk about.

In calculating my ideal weight at that time, my doctor was using a standard weight chart for men. And I got to thinking... One of the things I asked my therapist afterwards was that, if I wanted to check my weight, what weight table should I use? Seems this question was one she hadn't fielded yet, so she answered my question at our next session, after she'd asked my doctor and done some research on it.

What she told me was that the current tables, either the men's or the women's charts, were ok as both tables were within the BMI ranges. So I've decided to use the weight charts for women. Heehee. That was more than four years ago, and I haven't given it further thought, and have been relying on the standard charts for girls. A friend of mine here at BCTS recently asked me what my BMI was, but I couldn't answer her, as I don't even know how to compute for it.

But, anyways, I am now within my ideal weight range. Yayyy! So I gotta watch my weight from now on. Talk about being a cliché girl, huh? At least I've resisted asking people if my clothes make me look fat. So far...

If I ever did that

I'd ask the question regularly!

In fact, when I asked the question, "Does this dress make my butt bigger?" I'd be hoping for a positive answer, haha!

You go girl!

Body Mass Index is one of the more frequently used statistical means of determining how 'ideal' a person's weight is. However, being based purely on height and weight, it cannot differentiate between adipose tissue and muscle tissue...

In metric, mass (kg) / (height (m) ^ 2)
In imperial, mass (lb) x 703 / (height (in) ^2)

The wiki article also includes a chart to give you an at-a-glance guide to which mass / height ratios fall into which category, as defined by various people within the medical establishment. An interesting (and easier to calculate) alternative is the WHR (Waist to Hip Ratio).

Waist circumference / Hip circumference

Apparently figures of around 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men are considered healthy. Wiki also mentions SAD (Sagittal Abdominal Diameter), which translates as the distance from one's back to one's upper abdomen, midway between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the ribs, measured while standing (<10" is apparently healthy, >12" is apparently unhealthy). Don't ask me how you'd go about measuring it - the helpful diagram on the Wiki article shows someone lying on the floor...

Obviously everyone has their own idea of their preferred mass, and these statistical measurements are only a guide (they don't compute exactly how much fat you've got). It's possible for people to have apparently similar diets and quantities of exercise but also have completely different body shapes. It's all a matter of personal preference as to whether you decide you need to gain or lose weight, and if so, if you're going to use these statistical methods as a means of progress measurement.

And on the subject of eating, most manufacturers of processed foods have now decided we need help in determining which foods are healthy and which aren't, so (in the UK at least) have started displaying statistics on the 'naughty stuff' (calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugar, salt) within on the front of the packs. Some go by GDI (what percentage of your recommended maximum daily intake a portion provides), while others have opted for 'traffic light' guidance (which is based more on percentage of naughty substance within the product - so a small 'red' cupcake may contain fewer calories than a 'green' salad). As if that wasn't bad enough, the UK's FSA (Food Standards Agency) has decided that's not enough, and is currently trying to persuade restaurants to dish out traffic light guides to their meals...

There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't...

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

Weight goals.

When I first started this debacle, I was 145-50. But then they put me on all those friggen psych drugs and I eventually swelled to 205. After I got off the drugs, I viewed my ruined body and was roundly discouraged.

In the 3 years since I started trying to lose the weight, this morning, I was down to 180. My goal is to get back down to between 150 and 160. Now, how much do B-C sized breasts weigh? And, how much should I allow for the 1/8th inch thick layer of um girl fat that I now wear?

So, it is a narrow path I walk and who knows where it goes?
