Right then! We're down to the last eight sides in the quarterfinals, which will be played this coming Friday/Saturday, or Saturday/Sunday depending on where you are in the world, and your time zone.

Here are the matches:

  • Paraguay v Spain

So, what are your predictions for the semis?

My prediction is:
Semi 1: Brazil v Uruguay

Venus beat Mars 2 to 1 in overtime. Venus secured the victory with the help of Antonia 1X4B, a late addition to the squad. Antonia had been on the Martian team, but in a stunning development, switched sides in the middle of the tournament. "I've always been a Venusian; since I was little. I can remember sitting up late at night, wondering what it would be like to be a Venusian. When I was 146, I actually purchased a Venusian uniform through the CWN (Cosmos Wide Net) and would wear it to bed."

Antonia's family was unavailable for comment, but a source close to the family said that they no longer considered her to be a Martian. Her transfer to the Venusian team was a rocky one. Several of her new teammates questioned her sincerity, and only accepted her after a period of transition, including a RSST (Real Solar System Test). She also required the permission of two league officials. Antonia 1X4B was permitted to participate with prostheses to simulate the fifth and sixth legs of her Venusian teammates. Rodrigo 7Z44a, the leading scorer for the Venusians, is rumored to be engaged to Antonia. When asked to comment, he issued this statement:

"As far as I'm concerned, she's all Venusian."

She was born for all the wrong reasons but grew up for all the right ones.

When Rodrigo 7Z44a

took Antonia home to meet his parents and grandparents, bigoted uncle Lester XXX768 gave them an acidic reception. Rumor has it that he was skunk drunk on some illegal hydroxide swill he'd brought back from his stint in the Uranian ammonia and methane mines. Until he can find work, he's taken up residence in a small room in the garage, next to the flotation charging station. Neighbors wonder if maybe he's been breathing too much secondhand ozone.

Unfazed, Antona and Rodrigo are saving for her eventual corrective and cosmetic surgery at the Inter-Speciary Correction Hospital in New Taipei, Pluto. Her skin dye regimen is almost complete. Said a neighbor, "You'd never know. If someone didn't tell you, you'd think she's been an acid breather all her life."

Here at Real Life Inc.

We know that footy is just a load of balls.

Unfortunately it hasn't stopped the local idiot fringe from celebrating... last week's defeat?

Love the post, 'drea. I was tempted to say "trust you!" but we do anyway.

Um gang? We are/were talking footbal/soccer here, weren't we?

And if any of you are *on* something, where can I get it?

Ah *WORLD* CUP, I get it now. Sounds like the Miss Universe Pageant will be real interesting in a few years.

-- snicker--

Feel so bad for the millions of Americans who rooted for Mexico. These two twenty-something cuties at one of our branch offices were so disappointed. If only I was their age and could comfort them.

I actually am going to buck

I actually am going to buck the status quo and say semis will be Netherlands v. Uruguay and Argentina v. Spain... And then I have Netherlands v. Argentina in the final with Argentina winning it all. Frankly, they have looked the best so far this tournament overall.

Second semi - Germany vs Spain.

Argentina 0, Germany 4 - today's not a good day to be an Argentina fan...
Paraguay 0, Spain 1 - but only after 83 minutes.

Semi 1: Uruguay vs Netherlands

I'm not the slightest bit interested in the games themselves - just the statistics and the media reports of off-pitch antics.

Brazil have been knocked out by the Netherlands, and Ghana lost on a penalty shootout.

Following on from the French players going on strike from a training session and the England squad doing even worse than usual (although I secretly wish Slovenia had a bit more stamina and had given die-hard fans an even bigger kick in the teeth by kicking us out in the group stage), it's certainly a world cup full of surprises...

...and untuned plastic trumpets. Talking of which, anyone noticed Google's latest joke? If you've been on YouTube recently, you may have noticed a button with a football icon tucked away in the player controls. Press it at your peril. Mercifully, it is a toggle switch so you can shut up the virtual vuvuzelas.

The Semis...

OK, you can now tell that I'm fairly useless when it comes to forecasting sporting events.

But, I don't let that stop me!

Semi 1: Netherlands v Uruguay
Semi 2: Germany v Spain

Final Prediction: Netherlands v Germany with the Germans winning.
Third place match: Uruguay v Spain with the Spanish finally showing their class.

Anyone else???

Netherlands 3, Uruguay 2

Uruguay aren't coming back from this point, late in the second half. The first finalist is found.

Uruguay scored a consolation goal in extra time, but the Dutch have made the final.

Position Secure

Well, we know Netherlands

Well, we know Netherlands are in the final, and I agree Germany will be there, because frankly they show up while the Spanish refuse to normally show up at the bad times.

For the Final, I'd say it is going to go to extra time, with Netherlands squeaking it out. But it will definitely be a wonderful game to see on Sunday.

Spain 1, Germany 0

It's somewhat galling when an octopus proves more accurate in picking World Cup Football winners than a human!

So, the finalists are:
Netherlands vs Spain

while the final no one wants to be in for third/fourth will be:
Uruguay vs Germany.

And what is sure to be a great quiz question:

Who was the only unbeaten team at the 2010 FIFA World Football Cup in South Africa?
