Would you believe a dying raccoon?

It's been out there since about 8 p.m. I'm well aware raccoons carry rabies so we're keeping our distance. But what do I do after the thing croaks?

I got a job in the morning I never once thought I'd have. Good night.

call Animal Control or the Humane Society asap

Could be diseased as you fear or was it hit by a car?

Still, the wildlife people are the experts and at worst will put it out of it's misery.

Don't envy you at the moment. Even seeing a wild creature die hurts me. Death is part of life but still ...

If the raccoon is diseased, animal control is the best option. You don't want it lying round, because another animal -- including a dog or (less likely) a cat -- might decide to try eating it.

I agree, animal control.

Animal control would be the people to call. A bat got in my mom's house, She called 911 and that's who they sent.

Or you could just shoot it, the raccoon, that is.

Animal Control

may just refuse to have anything to do with it, since it is not a domesticated animal like a dog or cat. They used to be called dog catchers, but many places have let humane societies take over running them. You may have to call the Dept of Natural Resources or its equal ( Conservation Officers) for anything to be done. The are concerned with rabies etc. Of course, if it was during the day light, they are naturally nocturnal and may have been scared off its hidey hole by another animal, and may just be "out of it" due to the light. I found one in the fork of a tree in my yard once. Threw rocks and sticks at it, yelled at it, did all by climb up there and get it down. Called the C.O.'s out and they just watchjed it for awhile. Once the sun started going down, it seemed to come back to life and after a while, it took off, perfectly fine. Might have popped it with a .22, but it would still have been stuck in the tree, and we were inside city limits and shooting was not allowed. edit.... oops, my first read saw 8 AM, not PM, but the rest still might apply. It was still light enough at 8PM tonight to confuse a coon, around here.

It's gone

I picked up the dead carcass with a shovel this morning and disposed of it.

I'm surprised someone didn't offer up a recipe...

That's basically...

That's basically what I'd have suggested - at least to start... I'd have had a plastic garbage bag ready to receive the carcass as well.. Glad it's dealt with.

I thought about sharing my granny's Coon Stew recipe, but to the best of my knowledge neither granny had such a recipe. LOL
