Today's (Sunday May 22, 2011) LuAnn comic strip has an interesting take on bias against boys wearing girls clothing.

Not funny at all....

...and not meant to be. More telling than the odd looks is the 'freak' putdown by the kid walking away. An commentary, not only on what is 'normal' or acceptable but, on what is unacceptable and downright mean. Thanks for posting this, dear friend.

... how I've become accustomed to this sort of thing. Everything about the reactions were what I expected. I read the strip, and said, "Yeah, that's exactly what I would have expected." I guess I looked at it in the context of some of the stories here. I hadn't thought about the fact I wasn't reading BCTS. I wonder what direction the author is going to take this, or is it going to be dropped? Is the author trying to make a point about conformity, or what? This has been one of my favorite strips for quite a while. LuAnn had a crush on Clay Aiken, but that line was dropped when Clay came out. Now the artist may or may not have intentionally crossed the line. I'm surprised the paper in Little Rock printed it. I imagine there will be a huge hue and cry about it from the fundamentalist faction.

I doubt that this will be allowed to go any further as far as the strip is concerned.

LuAnn strips on Sunday are often a single topic, and not an on-going story. The character depicted in girl's clothing, is often the class cut-up/clown. So it is hard to tell what is the intent. However, that type of thing happens often. Perhaps the author of the strip, intends to open debate without taking a stand.
