Well, I'm just about to leave for Slave Lake Alberta. They changed my destination, and now I'm going to be there an extra day, so more than likely this will be my last chance to talk to you guys until Friday. Wish me luck, I'm a little nervous.

So I don't know where slave Lake is, but what a horrible name. Who was the person who gave it that name? Eeew

Why is it Called Great Slave?

Why is it Called Great Slave?
The 18th century northern explorer, Samuel Hearne, knew it as “Athupusco.” The aboriginal people who fished in it called themselves the “Etchareottine” – “the people dwelling in the shelter of the Rocky Mountains.” But the fiery Cree, who were contemptuous of the mild-mannered lifestyle of the lake-dwellers, referred to them as “awonak,” or “slaves.” The derisive name, “Slave Lake” found its way into fur trader/cartographer Peter Pond’s 1790 map of the North West. Although a later Pond map, created in 1790, restored the earlier term of “Iotchinine’ (another form of “Etchareottine”), the Slave Lake label became part of common usage. The use of the term “Great” stems from the distinction between the large Slave Lake to the north, and the smaller “Lesser” Slave Lake, located in central Alberta.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Sounds crazy to me.

Sending somebody to The Great Slave Lake half way accross Alberta just to cover 2 shifts sounds f-----g crazy to me. That must be a thousand miles or something.

Good luck kid, watch out for any hungry bears cos they'll not have started hibernating yet and they'll be hungry for just about everything. Including soft, succulent girls. Hope you've got a good rifle and a steady hand.

Bev.

I'd wear something like this so if you get really lost, a polar bear might fancy you and keep you warm.

Hugs.

Bev.

Slave Lake

Is the town, as opposed to Great Slave Lake or Lesser Slave Lake which are actually lakes.

It's about a 3.5 to 4 hour drive from Edmonton (depending on how fast you want to drive), and was the scene of a horrific fire earlier this year that destroyed 1/3 of the town.

Before the fire, a very vital little community.....and they will be recovering from it for a long time to come.

My niece was living and working there until this fall.
