Hi every body,
Just one little question about tags.
What does Contributed by author(s) mean ?
As I'm pretty sure that I contribute to any stories that I would post, and the same goes to all of the writer we got here.

contributed

Hi,

I've been reading that to mean that we, as authours, are giving up our right to copyright and are contributing same to BCTS (or those in charge of it).

As I intend to also place my stories at other locations or up for public sale, I do not select that particular option.

I shall be using the "permission of authour to post" instead. No offense intended.

I have several stories which I'm in the stages of polishing prior to post but will retain all rights to the stories even if I post them. Sorry, but I'm following in the footsteps of a favorite authour of mine who posted here and that's how she did it.

"Contributed by Author" means

LibraryGeek's picture

"Contributed by Author" means that the actual author is the one posting the story. "Permission of Author to post" means that someone else, not the author, is posting the story, but has the OK from the actual author to do so. In both cases copyright is reserved to the actual author. The recent posting of Morpheus' stories is an example of "Permission of Author to post", as someone else is actually posting the stories, with his permission.

I don't think so

'Contributed by Author' means only that it was the author who posted the story to the site. It does not mean in any way that you cede copyright to anyone else or any other body, company or organization.

If you are posting your own work then this is the option you should take. Any other option implies that what you are posting is not your own work, which may also mean that you do or do not have the right to post it.

You can make the copyright ownership clear by pasting a paragraph at the top of your story or chapters.

In The Case Of the new universe,"Reckoning"

Contributed by Authors is meant to indicate that the various authors involved in this universe are allowing me to post the stories, while they are credited with authorship.

I want to make it VERY clear that I am claiming NO authorship of any stories of parts of the Reckoning stories other than those I actually write. EVERY other part is, and will be, credited to the author who wrote it.

Contributed vs. permission to post

Hi everyone, back again...

I checked with Renae (close friend) who has the rights to the stories written by T.D. Aldoennetti.

She told me that when Teddi posted, she selected the “Permission of Author to post” since her attorneys told her that “Contributed” was just that... a contribution. Regardless of what everyone takes it to mean on this site, her attorneys are reading that to mean that all rights to the material have been given over.

“Permission to post” means the material is subject to the Author or copyright holder’s ongoing decision to allow or disallow the material to remain posted.

I don’t intend to argue or try to change anyone’s opinion but I think I’ll stick with the “Permission to post” for my material AND I’ll put a copyright notice in it as well.

Thanks for prodding me into checking with someone who actually had gone through legal checks before she re-posted Teddi’s material.

Perhaps change the wording...

Of the option to "Posted by author(s)" instead, and then the legal arse wipes can be happy.

They, of course, do not speak English, but a seriously wrangled up interpretation thereof known as "legalese".

Lawyers are full of you know what

They didn't see the site, and they are probably not copyright lawyers. It actually takes some very specific language to give up one's copyright and a legal signature or equivalent with all kinds of caveats checked off.

I can change the wording if it makes people uncomfortable but the opinion of a lawyer who did not look at the site and is not a copyright specialist is worth about as much as a piece of used paper.

Hugs,
Erin
