How dare they!!!

Why do I instinctively think that this is East Texas and the same people who rule for the Patent Trolls in every lawsuit...

BLARG!

~And so it goes...

Brought to you by the same people

that elected Senator Cruz.

It is highly offensive, but it does highlight one of several complaints I have with the modern American school system.

I really hope...

That Wendy Davis gets elected governor of Texas next year.

She led the filibuster that delayed the bill to severely limit inexpensive access to reproductive health care for women.

Already reversed

Article about reversal

However, while I'm glad the school relented, I want to play Devil's Advocate briefly. I looked through a few articles, and was unable to find anything saying whether Jayden has gone through the legal processes to be recognized as a man. The same language appeared several times, that he identifies as male. Fine, but we now have a legal process to go through, and if he hasn't, the school has reason to say otherwise. Again, I have no personal knowledge on this point, only the lack of any evidence either way - but that could give the school some grounds to stand on.

Again, I'm inferring here, but the fact that they have a yearbook dress code tells me that they've probably had problems with kids abusing that in the past - it's happened elsewhere, after all. Now, I wouldn't have raised any fuss, since he looks perfectly fine, but if both my guesses were correct, I can't get too overly upset with the school either.

Anyway, looks like it blew over pretty quickly. From the dates on the articles, it looks like it took two days, so kudos all around to those organizations that got involved.

Those rules

Those kind of rules regarding yearbook photos have existed for at least 50 years that I know of. The original intent was to present a unified look for all students. The "drape" mentioned was usually something similar to a boa that was draped around the girl's neck so that the clothing was covered. The guys got a little more variety with the choice of a tuxedo or suit.

The city where I graduated high school had two high schools. The older one still required the boa drapes for girls, the newer one allowed the girls to wear blouses although there was still a "decency" rule that had to be met. So I'm more surprised that the school gave in so easily than that the rule was there in the first place.

There most likely is no way to go "through the legal processes to be recognized as a man." Regardless as to whether such a process exists for an adult in Texas, I sincerely doubt that it does for a child. And the hidden assumptions of the school are that there are only two options: male or female and no changing categories. Lots of people here know from personal experience that that is not exactly true.

Of course the school has grounds to stand on, they are legally in loco parentis to a degree. And a dress code for yearbook pictures makes sense. The problem is really having a dress code that is not written to take into account human variety. Jaden did not want to violate the dress code, only to apply the appropriate option inside the dress code.

The school administration needed to be educated and this was the opportunity. From the news about the reversal, it looks as if that is happening.

And yeah, this was resolved so quickly that it really looks like people were looking to resolve it. Twenty years ago, this might have ended in murder and no kidding about that because it has happened and is still happening today. Jaden is very brave.

Hugs,
Erin

Who is being hurt by a picture in a yearbook?

Hope Eternal Reigns's picture

How does the type of clothing ANY person wears, of their own free will, for a yearbook picture, harm ANYONE? AND Who the heck looks at yearbooks all that often? I know I don't, but then my school years were not ones that I remember fondly. I say: Get your head out of your A$$E$ fundies, and start working against things that ACTUALLY HURT PEOPLE.

End of rant. Sorry to anyone offended by this comment.

Yearbooks

Thankfully I'm of an age when we didn't have these things. If we did have them I would have refused to have my ugly mug in it even though I am happy to be on the other side of the camera.

I was so bullied at schoold there was no way I would want to be reminded of it ever again. I would also not want my picture to be in it so that the bullies could gloat over their conquests in years to come. School was a time for forget as quickly as possible.
This story of mine http://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/fiction/25119/revenge-is-so-ve...
has a lot of me in it. I left school at 15 and returned 6 years later with an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

When I lived in NH I could never understand the fascination with these things.
I would not be surprised that the School District will soon be on the wrong end of lawsuits from parents who 'don't want that thing in my child's yearbook' such is my low opinion of people and the law in East Texas.

It's Texas...

Where they still debate whether they belong to the rest of the United State. We have court cases ongoing here that are unbelievable. It is a forgone conclusion that Texas will loose, but you gotta keep the American Taliban (Right Wing Religious) happy. Doesn't matter who rights they stomp on.
