Nevermind

It seems Almost every story is broken, even ones passed that. But oddly enough random stories are not broken.

It's a thing

All the newer stories go into a state of quantum flux occasionally, their text appearing mysteriously in another universe or something. But they always come back. When it happens I go to my BOOKMARK list for an older story...

Flux???

"That was the day I invented time-travel. I remember it vividly. I was standing on the edge of my toilet hanging a clock, the porcelain was wet, I slipped, hit my head on the sink, and when I came to I had a revelation! A vision! A picture in my head! A picture of this! This is what makes time travel possible: the flux capacitor! It's taken me nearly thirty years and my entire family fortune to realize the vision of that day."

Doctor Brown

My father, who grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, liked Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray. I tried it once when visiting New York (it's not generally found in California) , and I must admit the attraction eluded me. I suppose nostalgia was the major point.

Broken stories

I reported this problem to Erin earlier today as If and when it happens she may need to be told. The core of her reply after fixing it was as follows:-

" What seems to happen is that we have three front ends and at times one of them gets out of sync, the cache fills with nonsense and people who are connecting with that front end see problems. It takes only a minute to fix but we don't always see it quickly."

Nonsense?

The cache fills with nonsense?

Those are our stories, dear. Of course they're nonsense!

Fixed at the moment

It also appears to be tied to how much traffic we are getting from bots trying to harvest the site which mostly happens on the weekends.

The Bots

Any way to sting them?

yup

but only if the site can't be indexed by search engines.

personally, I think it is better to get results on a search engine than not.

Stupidity is a capital offense. A summary not indictable.

Probably more accurately, it

Probably more accurately, it's bots that crawl the site and don't obey robots.txt files. (This is for non techs, BTW) That file can be used to tell bots to not index picture directories, indexing result sections, and don't do it more than once a day. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of bots out there, of various countries, that don't care.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

I agree.

The bad bots don't follow the rules. I've learned the hard (and painful) way that one can't demand anything, no matter how forcefully, and get it -- without some kind of enforcement. I mean, of course, either doing something that gets what we want, or doing something that hurts those who don't do it.

On ASS*, for example, the occasional newbie or naïf would angrily reply to a spam with something like a curse and "spammer" -- not realizing that they're avoiding any replies to their spamming.

So my question is, can we hurt them?

Heh. I was just reminded of a story I began nearly 20 years ago, called, "A Spammer's Plight". Unfortunately, I never got to finishing it. The story would (sort-of) fit on this site.
