Aaron just wanted to find some proof.

“Aaron this is crazy!”

“You don’t have to come with me, Allie,” I said looking back over my shoulder.

Pointing at the sign mounted on a chain-link fence topped with razor wire, “Can you not read? It says ‘No Trespassing’ and ‘Restricted Area – US Government Property’. I don’t think we’re supposed to go in there.”

“Here’s the spot I found last week,” I said as I got down on my knees and began making a spot of erosion under the fence wider and deeper. “Of course they don’t want anyone in there. They want it to stay a secret.”

“What do you expect to find? I should have stopped you from coming out here.” Allison folded her arms and scowled at me.

I looked up from my digging. “I expect to find proof. And you couldn’t have stopped me. I shouldn’t have let you come with me.”

Fortunately the air was cool this particular Saturday morning despite the ample sunshine. The previous weekend I had just been out for a morning walk through the local woods when I stumbled upon a fenced in compound with a couple warehouse sized buildings, a small office looking building and an airstrip just big enough for a commercial sized jet. I saw the eroded spot under the fence, but there was a high school event I needed to hurry back for.

I finally got the hole big enough to accommodate me and I started to crawl under the fence. “Either stay there and keep a lookout for me, or come with me, but I’m going to check this out.”

“This is crazy.” Allie knelt down by the fence.

“You said that already.”

Wriggling under the fence, Allie muttered, “We are so dead if we’re caught.” I just laughed.

As we walked across the compound’s yard, I looked carefully left and right. “I don’t see anyone around. It’s dead quiet around here.”

Allison looked around nervously. “I hope you’re right. We’re committing a crime, you know.”

I waved my hand in a shushing motion. “But we’ll be exposing a bigger crime.”

Allison laughed without humor. “You need to stop watching those conspiracy videos on YouTube.”

I turned to frown at her. “Don’t mock me, Allie. You’ll see.”

We walked up to the small office building. I jiggled the door handle.

Allison folded her arms. “What did you expect to find here, Sherlock? What’s so suspicious here anyway?”

I just rolled my eyes. “You don’t find it suspicious that there’s a landing strip isolated in the woods that’s large enough to land a big jet? There are no signs labeling this place. Just the keep out signs. Not to mention that this spot is blurred on Google Earth. Seems suspicious to me.”

I pushed on the door again. The building seemed rather old. Strangely none of the buildings seemed particularly new. I leaned on the door and the catch slipped and the door opened. “Yay, we’re in. Look how old these buildings are, Allie. You would have noticed someone doing construction here in the last few years. No, this facility has been here for years.”

Allison kept looking around. “Get what you came for and let’s jet. This place gives me the creeps.”

I opened a filing cabinet and began rifling through the records. One caught my eye and I pulled it out. As I fished in my pocket for my phone, I shouted, “Bingo! Look at this!”

Allison looked over my shoulder as I took a few pictures. “What am I looking at?”

I smirked. “Invoices. Invoices for tons of atrazine. And look at this! Chemicals containing large amounts of phthalates. These are all endocrine-disruptive compounds.”

“Phtha-whats?” Allison frowned at me. “What are you talking about?”

I started getting excited. “Studies have shown these kinds of chemicals have turned male frogs into fully functional female frogs that can become pregnant.”

“Bullshit!” spat Allison.

“It’s true!” I exclaimed. I opened a desk drawer and revealed a set of keys. “I bet these open those warehouse doors! Let’s check.”

“You got your pictures. Let’s get out of here!” pleaded Allison.

I shook my head. “Not until I see what’s in those warehouses.”

After several tries, I found a key that unlocked the first warehouse we went to. “We’re in business.” I pushed open the door and walked into the darkened warehouse, lit only from sunlight streaming through dirt smeared windows.

My eyes went wide at what I saw. Row upon row of large cylinders with pressurized contents. The chemical labels on the cylinders showed a bizarre cocktail of industrial estrogens.

I slapped Allison lightly on the back. “We’ve hit the mother lode!” I started taking pictures with the camera on my phone.

“I don’t get it,” said Allison with a frown. “What are we looking at?”

I pointed at the sky. “You’ve seen those chem-trails criss-crossing the sky, right?”

Allison folded her arms again. “You mean those contrails from the hot exhaust from jet engines?”

I took Allison’s hand. “No. I mean chem-trails. Those chemicals being released in the atmosphere that are feminizing men, lowering sperm counts and turning guys into trannies. Come here and look.”

I led her over to where several large and tall cylinders were standing. There were hoses coming from one end of the cylinders that fed into a strange box.

“See?” I said pointing at the top of one cylinder. “When the plane is in flight, the chemicals flow down through this hose to this device. The chemicals go aerosol here and spread across the atmosphere.”

Allison stared, her eyes wide. “Bullshit.”

“It’s true!” I waved my hand dramatically and whacked it on something solid. Suddenly a nasty, foul-smelling substance came spewing from a nozzle attached to the hoses. It quickly covered my face and mouth and I felt cold and wet all over from contact with it. At first I heard Allison’s screams but they quickly faded away. I slumped to the floor as I lost consciousness.

Everything sounded far away at first. I couldn’t open my eyes. I couldn’t move my arms and legs as they seemed to be fastened to a railing.

“Oh, you’re awake!” exclaimed a female voice from beside me. I managed to crack open an eye, but my vision was still blurry.

A male voice from my other side said, “I knew you were a fighter, honey.” Someone squeezed my bound hand.

Another figure came into view but still blurry. A man I think. He said, “All vitals look good. You should be able to take your little girl home in a few days or so. Just a few more tests to be sure.”

Little girl? Who was he talking about. I assumed I was in a hospital room, but then I wasn’t so sure. My vision finally cleared and I could see everyone around me.

A woman I’d never seen before smiled at me and leaned in close. “Don’t worry. Mommy’s here.”

The man on the other side of the bed, who I had never seen before either, laughed. “She’s never left your side ever since you took that nasty fall.”

The man in the white lab coat smiled at me, then to the man next to my bed. “Mr. Hamilton, your daughter is going to be just fine. Being thirteen helps a lot, but she’s a very strong girl.”

I tried to talk, but my mouth was so dry my tongue wouldn’t work. Daughter? Thirteen? Strong girl? A nasty fall? They couldn’t be talking about me! Last thing I remembered was being at that secret compound with Allison when I was sprayed with… with… oh my God. Sprayed with a massive dose of feminizing chemicals! Like those frogs, it turned me into a girl! But… but… that’s just not possible!

The woman’s eyes twinkled as she said, “The other girls on your cheerleading squad will be happy to hear you’re finally awake. Everyone’s been asking about you.”

Struggling against my wrist straps, I finally managed to croak, “Who the fuck are you? What the hell is this?”

The woman looked shocked. “Honey, I’m your mother. Don’t you remember me, dear?”

The doctor said in soothing tones, “Remember? I said she might have spells of forgetfulness. That was a hard hit to the noggin’.”

Scowling, I shouted, “I didn’t hit my head you asshole! Who are you people? Where am I?” I jerked fiercely at my restraints.

The man next to me said, “Just relax, honey. Everything’s going to be okay.”

The doctor looked at me with a worried expression. “We may have to keep her a few extra days for observation. We don’t want her to hurt herself or someone else.”

I pulled against the restraint again. “You’re damned straight I’m going to hurt someone if I don’t find out what’s going on!”

The doctor again spoke soothingly to the woman beside me. “She’s had a bad head trauma. Give her some time and she’ll be back to being a perfectly normal little girl.”

At that moment there was shouting outside my room’s door. The door slammed open and I saw a girl push several nurses out of her way as she ran towards me. Her eyes went wild with horror as she saw me. Her hand and arm were bleeding from feeding tubes that had been pulled loose.

It was Allison! I tried to sit up but was too firmly tied down.

“Oh my God it’s true! Aaron! We have to get out of here! Before it’s too late! We have to escape this nightmare!” Several orderlies and nurses came up from behind her and grabbed her. A man held her arm as a nurse injected something.

“Aaron! Aaron… ” Her voice faded as she slumped into the arms of the orderlies.

The doctor said, “Easy with her. Get her back to her room quickly.” He turned towards us and smiled that well rehearsed smile and said in a soothing tone. I’m very sorry about that, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton. I don’t know how she managed to get out of her room.”

Mrs. Hamilton looked horrified. “Is she dangerous? What could she want with our daughter?”

The doctor shrugged. “Who knows? She’s very delusional and we’re not sure what’s going on with her. It won’t happen again, I assure you.”

Mr. Hamilton, looking visibly shaken said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen her before so it’s odd she referred to our daughter as ‘Aaron’.” He looked down at me. “How could she know your boyfriend’s name is Aaron?”

What the hell? I’m Aaron! I tried again to speak, but couldn’t.

Mrs. Hamilton asked, “Would you like to see him? Aaron is here. He’s been dying to see you since your fall.” She waved to a nurse.

A young boy entered the room. He couldn’t have been much older than fourteen. He smiled hesitantly when he saw me. “Hi Allison. Do you remember me? Aaron?”

I barely managed to croak, “Just what in the fucking hell is going on? I’m not Allison!”

In his patented soothing voice, the doctor said, “This is perfectly normal. Just keep calling her Allison and she’ll eventually remember who she is.”

Mrs. Hamilton said, “She’s lucky to have Aaron as such a great boyfriend.”

Mr. Hamilton said, “Your mother and I can’t wait to have you back home again, Allison.”

I looked back and forth from the man to the woman. These aren’t my parents, are they? I tried to think of my own mother.

“Mom?” I whispered.

Mrs. Hamilton smiled. “Mommy’s right here my dear Allison. Mommy’s right here.”

I smiled as I drifted back off to sleep.
