It's curtains for me

It’s curtains for me
my little entry in the double dip contest. Its for the "performance" side, if you cant guess by the title ...

Sis, honest to God, I never planned on being a performer, much less the lead in a school musical.

I mean, you know I loved my drama classes, and was part of the drama club, but I always figured I’d be behind the scenes rather than on stage, unless it was as an extra.

I mean, it’s not like I look as handsome as the boy who played the male lead. (Geez, did I really just say that out loud?)

But both my teacher/director Mr. Connor and our best performer Kelly Anderson saw something in me I didn’t.

First it was Mr. Connor who decided I was the best person to be his assistant during the production of the latest musical, “guys and dolls”.

And that job meant I spent a lot of time Kelly, who always got the lead role in any production we put on.

Right up until she broke her ankle two days before we were supposed to open, and she decided I was the perfect person to replace her, despite me being a boy.

I still have no idea how she convinced Mr. Connor, nor how he convinced my parents, but before I knew it it was showtime, and there I was, wearing a dress and preparing to sing and act in front of hundreds of students and their families.

And as you know, sis, it was a big success.

But something happened to me doing this. Dressing as a girl was scary but it also felt ... right, somehow.

And I have no idea what that means.

So that’s why I wanted to talk to you, sis.

What the heck do I do now?

End.

Congrats on being first to enter! You hit all the bases...

A fun take on the challenge!

And certainly a surprise to see so early! For my own time zone the challenge has been open for a grand total of 2 1/2 hours, and you're already out there gathering thumbs up :P

This was good, Dot. You worry too much.

Melanie E.

thanks, Melanie.

it only hit me when I did a word count as part of putting the story here that I realized just how short it was. And as much as I'm probably known for trying to squeeze as much story in the shortest space I can, I thought this might be pushing it ...

hugs!

Nice Flash

"And that job meant I spent a lot of time [with?] Kelly, who always got the lead role in any production we put on." I take it that he was Kelly's understudy.

"It's curtains for me." He's so dead now, having sung and danced as a young lady in front of an audience of thousands. Or is it merely his identity as a guy that's now dead? He performed, and something clicked, right?

At least he got to perform in the dress rehearsal, rather than having to perform without rehearsing.

That was one fine flash.

"flash stories"

hmm, never heard that term before, but a good number of my stories would probably qualify. I'm glad you liked this one!

thank YOU, Willow

I'm so glad you liked it!

As always

I enjoyed it, I just wish I had your imagination!

You boiled down the premise

You boiled down the premise of multiple stories on here by various authors into 300 words that tell the same story and has the same impact that 40-80,000 words of their works have.

Sometimes, less is more. And in your case it's short, sweet, and to to the point. Exceptionally done, Dorothy.

I'm told STFU more times in a day than most people get told in a lifetime

A really neat short story.

A really neat short story. It just goes to show you that a person never knows when their true life will appear and how it will appear. Thanks for this Dorothy.

Excellent

Short sweet and full of content. This could be the opening paragraphs of an on-going story. With your great ability to squeeze so much into so little it will not be boring and it'll be a short read.

thank you, Will

I might come back to this one, if my muse permits.

You might win this

Kind of a switch?

Not many brothers seek advice from their sisters when it's embarrassing. He may not know how he was talked into taking Kelly's place, but neither did he put up a fight, or walk away, to keep from playing the part.

What should sis tell him? Talk to the rents?

A very neat story that stated the problem concisely. Hope sis has an answer.

Others have feelings too.
