Big Closet Meeting

Author’s note; Thanks to Bill Durr for the editing. Any remaining mistakes are mine. The use of the names of my fellow authors here is done with total love, and I hope they dont mind I did it.

I found myself in Hawaii, and just ahead of me, I could hear people celebrating. I saw a sign on an archway saying, “Big Closet authors welcome,” so I went in.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. I’ve been asked to act as Mistress of Ceremonies here, but I promise I won’t keep you from the celebration long. But I would like to recount how this amazing meeting came about.

It was two years ago that our beloved webmistress Erin had the most amazing luck, and won a Powerball jackpot of more than two hundred million dollars. Now, most people would have just used the money on themselves, but not Erin. After paying off some debts, she decided that at least some of the money should be used to create a gathering of big closet authors, to celebrate our friendships, meet, and make new friends, and for fine dining. And here we all are.”

“Ladies and Gentlemen and those in between, Erin.”

“Thank you so much. I can’t believe how many of our authors took me up on the offer of an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii.”

“Like we were gonna turn that down?” Someone shouted.

The whole group laughed.

“All right. Lets eat!”

The meal consisted of fish and vegetables. Normally, this wouldn’t be my favorite, but seeing the others tucking in gave me the urge to at least try it, and I found it amazing.

Once the meal was over, we were invited to mingle and there was even a dance floor with a band playing, so I decided to meet some of the authors whose work had touched me.

I got a chance to hug Steff the Cyclist, and tell her in person how much her support meant to me, and then I giggled with Extravagance who had loved to tease and flirt with me.

I cheered a kiss between Bailey Summers and his wonderful girlfriend, who blushed, and then gave a kiss on the cheek to Jo Dora Webster as thanks for her wonderful comments.

I gave a wolf-whistle at Beverly Taff, and made a “Bailey’s Angels” pose with Lisa just for giggles.

I handed Taarpa a bag of popcorn and gave a hug to Diana Moongoddess.

I finally met Jaci face to face after all our phone conversations, and met Ruth for the second time as she teased us both for acting like little girls.

I shook the hand of Felix and hugged his fiancee Katie, who looked lovely.

Then I saw something strange.

I saw Drea with her wife Tracy, and as far as I could remember, Tracy was not in favor of Drea showing her feminine side outside of her writing. But there Drea was in a very pretty dress that matched the one Tracy was wearing, and both looked totally happy.

Then it got even stranger.

I got a tap on the shoulder, and turned to see a beautiful woman standing with her arms open, and somehow, I recognised Wren Phoenix.

“But ... you died!” I cried.

“Don’t worry about it, Dorothy. Come on, you’re going to be late for the wedding!”

“Wedding? Whose wedding?”

“Why yours, of course.” She said, and led me to a room where a bridal gown was waiting for me. Soon, I was ready, and stepped out, and she nodded to someone who made a signal, and the band started playing “Here comes the bride”

And waiting for me at the makeshift altar was Kylie.

Vows were exchanged, kisses were given, and congratulations were sent, which meant it took me some time before I could get away alone to try to find out what was going on. I tracked down Wren, and said, “Wren, please. Am I dead?”

“You are on the threshold, Dorothy. You had a heart attack, and right now your life is in the balance, and the choice is yours. You can stay here, and have everything you ever wanted, or you can go back. “

I sat down in a nearby chair and tried to think. I had everything I wanted here, why would she even ask if I wanted to go back?

But did I have everything I wanted?

What was missing?

Then it hit me. “My daughter.”

“You would have to leave her behind to stay here.” Wren said.

And I made my choice.

“Let me go back. My daughter still needs me, and the real versions of the people here need me.”

“You sure? You’d give up all this to go back to that life?”

“I have to.”

“No. You have to stay!” she said, and grabbed my arm.

“Let go of my granddaughter.”

I turned, and saw my grandmother.

“Grandma? What’s really going on?”

“That’s not your friend, hon. Wren is ... elsewhere, waiting for your time to be up to meet you for real. This was a test. And I’m proud to say, you passed.”

“So I can go back to my daughter?”

“For now. Time will come, and you will come to be with me, with Wren, and there are more waiting for you. People whose lives you’ve touched, and of course The One who gave you that life in the first place.”

“I’m glad. You .... called me granddaughter?”

“Of course hon. You gain a certain perspective here. I’ve watched you fight, and finally accept yourself as a woman. I’m so proud of you.”

She gave me a hug, and then started to fade.

“See you soon, granddaughter.”

I woke to found myself in my bed, with no signs of the supposed heart attack the fake Wren said I had.

I sighed, and turned over in my bed.

“See you soon, grandma, and the real Wren, and all those others waiting for me.”

"See you when my work is done here on earth, but I'll always be looking up at all of you."

I'm Not Sure?

littlerocksilver's picture

The last line was a bit of a downer for me. Hopefully, this is just a fantasy.

Portia

One thing you have to remember,

Extravagance's picture

"soon" is not a standardized unit of time measurement. Our Dorothy could live beyond 100, and the decades between then and now could be nothing at all to those for whom time is mostly immaterial.

I was in the dream as a SPIRIT? Good grief. You are what you eat/drink, maybe I've been overdoing the vodka recently... :D

Catfolk Pride.PNG

giggles, Extravagance

You were there as a soul. Which you have, and an awesome one!

Soon, or a definition according to Sapience

Sapience is the Community Manager for Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online and this is from his blog.

Please keep in mind; the measurements below are highly accurate (as are their relationships to each other). However, the descriptions are for entertainment purposes only. Unless you win money, then you owe me 10%.

NOW!
Never gonna happen!

At some point in the future (also; At some point)
We’re in pure Nostradamus territory here. We have a magic 8 ball and even it said, “Ask again later”.

In the future
This isn’t going to happen during any variety of soon you care to use. In fact, it’s pretty far out there. Not as far as ‘at some point’, we’re certainly not suggesting you book vacation time just yet, but, we’re probably talking about something that is possible within the current time line. Assuming, of course, the Mayans got it wrong and we’re still here after all that crazy ‘end of the world’ stuff.

In the near future
This is absolutely, positively, without question, a possibility. In fact, it might even be a real possibility. But as to when, we’ll have to get back to you on that one.

Soonâ„¢
No lie. It’s going to happen. It’s going to happen really freakin’, like, eventually. But it will happen!

“Soon”
It’s official! We have given consideration to a possible date and we now have several possibilities!

Soon
We’ve narrowed the date down to something within the calendar year!

soon
No really, we have a date now! It’s even penciled in on a calendar somewhere!

MoreSoonerish
We have a date, and we’re probably going to tell you what that date is…soon!

Incredisoon
OK! We’re done messin’ around. We have a date, we’ve found the calendar we wrote it on, and we are going to tell you. Like right freakin’ shortly! Seriously!
Tomorrowish-esqueâ„¢
This is going to happen within the next 24 hours. Give or take some random number of hours which may or may not exceed an amount equal to the number of miles between the reader and the International Date Line divided by 163.97241. Unless the person is actually standing on the International Date Line at the time of reading, in which case the world will end in a cataclysmic divide by zero error and none of this will matter anyway. This is all barring any conflicts with ‘The Schedule’, of course.

As soon as possible
Time being the slippery thing it is, this has quite probably already happened. If not, it is very likely to happen while someone is typing up the message telling you when it will happen. Assuming, that it is in fact possible.

Modifiers, adjustments, and other fun stuff.

Capitalization
As a general rule, capitalization will tip you off as to a measurement’s place in time. Capital letters denote a longer period of time than lower case letters. This applies to all uses of capitalization when dealing with time. Thus Soon is longer than soon. Like wise, MoreSoonerish, Moresoonerish, and moresoonerish are all incremetally shorter periods from longest to shortest.

TM and its uses
The notorious â„¢ has very specific meanings. It denotes a longer period of time than the word or phrase would otherwise represent without the addition of the â„¢.

Quotes
The use of quotes, like the use of TM and Capitalization has specific meaning. It is another measure of extending the noted period of time. Though it denotes a shorter extension than either â„¢ or Capitalization.

Combined notation
When you see a combination of modifiers (â„¢, quotes, and capitalization) you must consider the impact of all modifiers on the base measurement. The more modifiers, the larger the expansion of time from the base measurement.

Addendum A: Spooky Stuff

It’s on schedule
This relates exclusively to a highly theoretical method of calculating time commonly referred to as, ‘The Schedule’. The Schedule is part of an emerging understanding of time called Quantum Sapience Time. Schedule Time has the amazing ability to exist, not exist, and potentially exist or not exist all at the same instant. It is only the act of observing The Schedule that forces it into a fixed state in which the normal rules of Sapience Time apply. This is commonly called “entanglement”. Entangling one’s self with The Schedule is a very risky proposition as it can lead to temporal disorientation. Especially as it does not require one to be in any physical proximity to The Schedule. Albert Einstein himself referred to this as “Spooky action at a distance.”

Addendum B: Backward Causality

We told you so
Any attempt to look back upon or view the flow of Sapience Time from a future point will amplify and enhance the predictive and pre-deterministic nature of soon. The effect of this observance is to reveal the perfect accuracy of all predictions within the fabric of the Sapience Time Continuum. In short, the act of releasing content will cause the time line to become self evident and clearly predictive of the exact moment in the future at which the release will happen when viewed from that future.

"Soon" doesnt mean tomorrow

In spiritual terms, "Soon" can be decades or even centuries. As Aslan put it in the Narnia books "I call all times soon".

Hugs, Portia!

DogSig.png

Thanks Dorothy,

Nicely done but like Portia I found the last line a worry but will treat
it as fantasy.

ALISON

Thanks, Alison

dont worry about the "Soon". "Soon can still mean decades from now.

DogSig.png

Made me smile a whole lot tonight:)

Very, very sweet and quite fun too but with a heartfelt message in the ending:)
*Great Big Angel Hugs*
Bailey a Proud Big Brother.

Bailey Summers

thanks, Bailey !

Sweet with a message is what I was going for

DogSig.png

Thanks Dorothy,

When you get to my age 'soon' is tomorrow!!:)

ALISON

As I have several decades on you ,my soon, will be before yours,so I hope to be there waiting for you ..

I'm sure you will be, Papa

look forward to giving you a big hug in person when I get there ....

DogSig.png

I am touched

I read this immediately after uploading 'Cold Feet' for Kindle, and of course one of the central themes there is motherhood. And here is yourself jerking that same chain...

What a blessing!

What a wonderful story, Dorothy. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all with your amazing writing talent. I feel honored to be among the ones who you mentioned by name in the abode of The One. Mind you I'm not planning on being there for real any time soon. But when I do go I look forward to an experience just like you described. Thanks again for taking us along. Well Done.

Jo Dora Webster

Thanks, Jo.

glad you enjoyed it hon.

DogSig.png

meet face to face

And I was a butt ugly woman compared to the blushing beautiful bride Dottie.

nope nope, Jaci

you made a beautiful bridesmaid

DogSig.png

uhm

You mean Best man surely?

nope, maid of honor

in a pretty dress, too

DogSig.png

Yes I know....

That you would be the maid of honor if I ever got married, thats aside from the point.

I see your in error ...again..

I would be your best man since you can't be one. Your a woman..

end of story.

I win

backwards as usual

you're a woman.

end of story

I win!

DogSig.png

I know your..

A woman. why you have to remind me your one at every opportunity is beyond me...

Women!

What?

I constantly admit I'm male.

*shakes head at silliness of Dottie*

*goes back to working on manly work*

You do realize

that is ruth sees this she will probably say something like..

" Your both acting like little girls."

although it actually applies more to you since your so girlie you make me look like the hulk im so manly.

no, ME am Man-Hulk!

Me am manliest one there is!

DogSig.png

Fight nice children....

D. Eden's picture

Next thing we'll hear will be, "She's touching me!"

Are we there yet?

Dallas

D. Eden

Dum Vivimus, Vivamus

Oy!

You're both very beautiful ladies, now stop arguing, I have a headache. :p

Dorothy - Tels--

Children - stop acting your age & grow up a bit!! Am I going to have Tante Drea take you both to task for your juvenile behaviour or will you simmer down and be good girls when you are out in public??

Nice little story Dottie - are you sure you want to marry again? I thought you learned your lesson a few years ago. Look after your daughter so you can organize her wedding & you will shine as the wonderful mother of the bride.

By the way "soon" for me is sooner than it used to be as you well know so, don't rush, but make sure that any great event you wish me to attend is sooner rather than later for me as well as Mary Allison.

Ruth

May the sun always shine on your parade

I'm going to try my best, Ruth

I'd love for you to be there when I got the SRS, but that means I got to get cracking on the weight .....

DogSig.png

I wasn't there because I

I wasn't there because I don't have a soul.
But here's a love song anyway. If and when you find the partner of your dreams, this is what I want you to hear.

http://youtu.be/9IYNGNVAFAc

Ban nothing. Question everything.

Just so good at getting the story right

What a nice short read this morning with breakfast.
Glad you did not go round saying hello to all the writers, that would have taken the shine off the tale until it was so dull the beauty was lost under the egos of every writer looking for their name.
Lauran

I felt bad for leaving people out

the writing level at this site is amazing, and the comments are so supportive, I could have mentioned everybody, but decided to let the few I do mention stand if for all the others. I'm really glad it worked out for you!

DogSig.png

<3

I was probably exploring the bar or buffet. Quite the shindig. Thanks Dot, Jenn.

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair

Yea!!! I get to go to.......

Hawaii! No wait, is it Hawaii or Heaven? Is Hawaii Heaven? Or is it Heaven's Hawaii? I'm so (pop)corn fused now! Oh Dottie, you don't have to go to Heaven or Hawaii to see li'l ol' me, just the Mid-Hudson valley silly! Seriously though, thanks for thinking of li'l ol' me sweetie. Oh and any kind of soon is WAY TO SOON! I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all want to keep you around here for a very long long time. Nice story Dottie, Big Hugs, Taarpa
