Jem…Chapter 106

Chapter 106

*Before…

There’s a lot I could be mad about really.

And sometimes, sometimes mad’s just not worth it.

I give Carmen a smile. “You don’t have to be part of the band to be one of our friends.”

She looks shocked and stunned….and she’s tearing up.

I start going after Jake. “Well? C’mon…”

She does this really big sniffle and a nod. “Yeah…yeah I’m with you.”

*And now…

We head upstairs and we go past Jake’s office which is like…Well the pub is an old, old converted brick building with a gable roof that was added onto it to give that whole German or European kind of look.

Now I think that it was an old warehouse at one point because Jake’s office is up stairs but it’s like at the very far end of the building and it’s like where you’d see like the foreman’s office complete with the windows to look down over the floor.

I look at Mike and he and Molly are talking and he’s getting some shots of the bar from up here just in case or maybe for something that they have in mind.

I so need to talk to Brooklyn and Mike and Uncle Mitch about Mike doing something maybe schoolwise with audio-video after all this crap is over with and we can start having all of our real lives. He’s just too good at this stuff to not be getting his papers for it and making a career out of it or at least like considering it.

We head to the far end of the landing and there’s one of those small crawl space sets of stairs that’s only one person wide and we all head up together single file and then we’re in the attic of the place.

Jake heads off to find the lights and Rayne wraps her arms around me and pulls me into a hug and presses into my back.

I’m beat…I’m just beat enough after everything that it feels like heaven her holding me like that.

“Mmmm…that feels awesome.”

“Good…you deserve some reward.”

“Reward…?”

“Yeah, I’m honestly not sure that I could have done with Carmen what you’re doing.”

“She can help and she needs help.”

“Angel…trust me, I’m not sure that everyone would be actually trying to be her friend with past history and stuff.”

“I’m just trying to be fair…and trying to live my life hon.”

“And That’s why I love you Angel, you actually do the right thing and not just talk about it.”

I’m blushing pretty intensely as she’s slowly nuzzling my neck in the dark and raising all sorts of yay happy gooseflesh while doing it.

I bite my lower lip a little and shiver when her teeth graze the skin of my neck.

Oh being a good person IS its own reward!

Jake hits the lights and it’s really full up here and it’s dusty in places but on the other hand it’s paradise.

No seriously there are things here from boxes and boxes of stuff like paperwork to old stuff from years back like placemats and the logos from the other generations and then there’s all this stuff in frames and there’s knick knacks and old records and stuff there’s even an old jukebox…that must have barely fix the stairs to get it up here…even old signs.

“Jake…wow, there’s so much stuff here.”

He nods. “It’s really mostly junk though.”

I look at a box flipping the folded ends open and there’s those old aluminum ashtrays but with a logo for the Amsterdam and a foaming beer mug on it. “These when stuff’s up and stuff this stuff is swag for the pub.”

“Swag?”

“It’s vintage, yeah they’re cheap but put them online, put them in the pub-shop?”

“Pub-shop.”

“Yeah, you become a spot to go you can sell your own stuff like other places do.”

“Like the hardrock café.”

I frown. “No, that’s a chain I was thinking more like The Horse-shoe in Toronto.”

“You know about that?”

I give him a look. “A lot of good people and bands played there Jake, but more importantly like that The Amsterdam’s unique. People will buy this stuff.”

Josie’s nodding. “She’s right, I mean she’s usually right whenever she talks like this and stuff but she’s definitely right about this.”

I blush a little and grin and then blush some more when Molly and Carmen are both looking at me with that semi-shocked look. Molly recovers first and she shakes her head but she’s grinning. “There’s a lot of work here Angel.”

“I know, but worth it.”

Rayne kisses me. We’re going to be sooo beat.”

I kiss her back. “I never said life with me’d be easy.”

She kisses me again. “I know but worth it.”

We hold each other just leaning on each other and doing the girlfriend thing and I hear Carmen asking Kimmie.

“She always like that?”

“Lesbian?”

“No, I’m cool with that but like…the stuff she was saying to the bar guy.”

“Oh yeah…def, that’s Angel, completely turning stuff around.”

“I…I’ve just never actually heard a girl talk like that?”

“What? The business stuff or the let’s do this all together make Harpers Point a better place thing?”

“Both…Most girls I now don’t think like that, hell most honestly don’t care much about much more than themselves.”

Brook joined them. “Yeah Adam’s fave kind of victim.”

Carmen nods and sniffles.

Brook actually reaches out and takes her hand and grips it. Not a hand shake but one of those like arm wrestle hand holds that you see like soldiers or bikers or rockers do. “Hey…I got out from my meth head abusive family…you can get out from under his bullshit…you’re strong enough.”

Kim puts her hand on Carmen’s shoulder. “And you’re totes not alone.”

Carmen looks at them and us and I nod and smile as Rayne gives me this really tight squeezey yay hug.

It sort of spreads, we’re all kind of just standing there looking at each other and smiling. I mean we could be just over-tired and stuff but no…no this has that feeling from earlier.

“Rock and Roll and Heart and Soul.” Josie says as she opens another box to look at.

I nod but there’s a lump in my throat.

That just so fits.

We all start doing the same and Jake’s like. “I’m going to separate this stuff too, there is stuff I should toss anyway.”

I nod. “We might as well help while we’re here.”

I look at the others and they nod and we start to work, lots of stuff.

It’s Josie who started it by just humming.

I couldn’t help it with them, this and the mood.

Me… “What would you think if I sang out of tune…Would you stand up and walk out on me?”

Rayne… “Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song…And I'll try not to sing out of key.”

Brooklyn and Kimmie just like we’d done this a hundred times…. “Oh I get by with a little help from my friends!”
“Mm I get high with a little help from my friends…”
“Mm going to try with a little help from my friends!”……..Molly and Josie join in at this line.

Me… “What do I do when my love is away?”

Rayne…“Does it worry you to be alone?”

Me… “How do I feel by the end of the day?”

Rayne… “Are you sad because you're on your own?”

Everyone in the attic… “No I get by with a little help from my friends!”
“Mm I get high with a little help from my friends!”
“Mm going to try with a little help from my friends!”

Me, I can‘t help but sing it loud like I‘m turning up the volume…It‘s turning up in my heart.

“Do you need anybody….?”
“I need somebody to love…”
“Could it be anybody…?”
“I want somebody to love….”

Rayne… “Would you believe in a love at first sight…?”
“Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time.”

Brooklyn… “What do you see when you turn out the light?”

Kimmie… “I can't tell you, but I know it's mine…”

And all of us again… “Oh I get by with a little help from my friends!”
“Mm I get high with a little help from my friends!”
“Oh I'm going to try with a little help from my friends!”

I love this, I really love this kind of stuff. This is why, this is why we sing and play rock and roll.

It‘s Rayne and I this time in stereo… “Do you need anybody!?”
“I just need somebody to love…”
“Could it be anybody…..!?”
“I want somebody to love….”

And all of us again… “Oh I get by with a little help from my friends!”
“Mm going to try with a little help from my friends!”
“Oh I get high with a little help from my friends!”
“Yes I get by with a little help from my friends!”
And it’s Josie who ends it with this sweet soft contralto…. “With a little help from my friends…”

I swear this, this will Keep, Keeping On.

It's really one of those great songs:)

I Love The Beatles, so many great tunes. It lent really well to the scene.

Something most people don't understand...

thliwent's picture

When you're a musician, music is just who you are.

You've just played a full set and are beat...

But you get started on something else and a song comes out. Just because.

I'm glad you've shown that. Makes it all more real.

A New Chapter of Jem

Puts a Smile on my Face!

Thanks,
Larimus

You're really welcome Larimus.

It's a short one, but a good sort of chapter. I felt right when I wrote it.

Jem just

Pulls my heart strings every time, this was an especially the last sentence. "I swear this, this will Keep, Keeping On." It takes me a long time to make friends and Jem has become mine.

Well done Ms. Bailey

One of my favorite songs!!! I like Joe Cocker's version better. It was 1968 and I was living in San Francisco
and it was a favorite to get high on. Lots of good memories!!

Hugs,
Pamela

You got that right

Joe Cocker's version is way superior to the Beatles. It has, excuse the expression, more "balls". Besides, his version has the excellent joining of singers doing the separate lines.

I went outside once. The graphics weren' that great.
