‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

With apologies to Clement Moore

'Tis the season, and I thought I would re-post this. I am working on some new pieces and continuing a series I started a long time ago, but this struck my funny bone tonight so I thought I would share it.

Cheers.

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY

‘Twas the night before surgery, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
My clothes were all hung in the closet with care,
I was hoping that morning soon would be there.

The girls were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of womanhood danced in their heads.
With me in my nightgown, lain down for a nap,
I’d just settled my mind when I heard a “tap, tap”.

From out in the hall, I heard a light clatter,
I sprang from the bed to join in the chatter.
When I opened the door I saw a small flash,
My surgical sister was flicking an ash.

The moon on the water of the river below
Flickered and twinkled like new fallen snow.
When, what to my wandering eyes should appear,
But a black SUV that began to draw near.

With one person inside, so handsome and French,
My legs went to rubber, I dropped down on the bench.
More rapid than eagles his nurses they came,
And he whistled, then spoke, and called us by name!

"Now Hailey and Katharine, it’s just about time !
Hailey, you’re first we will start about nine
Katharine we will take you up about noon
By five you’ll both be back in your room

As my heart tries to beat through my chest, there I lie,
All jitters and nerves, I gaze up at the sky.
So crisp and so clear, so sapphirine blue,
Soon, very soon, my dream will come true.

And then, in a twinkling, I hear in my room
The clicking and tapping of each little shoe.
As I lift up my head, the nurse comes to me,
It’s time to go up to the prep room, you see

He was dressed all in scrubs, from his head to his toes,
And his clothes were all rumpled, like a regular Joe’s.
A compassionate look he had on his face,
And he looked like a surgeon, at home in this place.

His eyes-how they twinkled! His voice oh so Gallic!
As he described the removal of my something phallic!
His droll little mouth was drawn up in a grin,
As he looked at the nurse and said “Please take her in”.

An indelible marker he held in his hand,
Marking the site with a certain élan.
He had a kind face and such gentle hands,
And then it was time to leave consciousness-land

The gas passer I see, with ears like an elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but picked up his tools,
And soon I was sleepy, my eyes limpid pools.
And laying his finger aside of my neck,
And giving a nod, a final pulse check!

The surgeon is back, to his team gave a call,
And they gathered around in that op’rating hall.
But I heard him say as I went out like a light,
"And now Katharine, we will make it all right!"

I actually had the pleasure of meeting both of the Montreal docs years ago at Aviva's house in New Jersey. It was a Sunday open house get together.

Believe...

Believe it or not, the #1 doc on my list was trained by Dr. M... So, of course, my therapist (who knows the doc) says if he does it, I'll end up speaking with a French accent...

Fun poem.

that I knew how to bump this up.

I think of all my sisters this night and hope that this dream comes true for them too,

Merry Christmas to all, and may we make it ALL right,
