Broken Image LInks to cdn.qnez.net

Printer-friendly version

Forums:

Started writing this on Embracing Justice | BigCloset TopShelf, then realised it was almost certainly an issue for Site Admins, and may also affect other stories images as well, so below is mostly a direct Cut & Paste of what I intended to post, on that stories latest chapter

Almost the entire series is missing the Marshall Badge Picture, only the file name shows up.
The Image is hosted on a site that at first glance, appears to be external to BCTS, that has gone down, as direct linking gives this error with both Pale Moon (A Firefox Based Browser), and Chromium (A Chrome based Browser).
Can't find the server at cdn.qnez.net
The rest of the cdn.qnez.net web address, looks like it's also a BCTS link, but maybe to an old site address, or a backup, no longer used?

This appears like this (Note if site returns pic will appear below)

Strangely, the posts from Educational Justice: Chapter 15 to Interpol Heartburn: Chapter 17, use the direct BCTS Address
https://bigclosetr.us/topshelf/system/files/u9968/142px-US_M...
This shows just fine, being a direct BCTS link

Why it switched back to using the now broken link for later Chapters, only the author/site admin might know, but SNAFU is a good guess.
Switching the image links host site (cdn.qnez.net) to the main BCTS address (bigclosetr.us) will fix the issue.
Easy to do in Notepad++, using Find and Replace, on the html version I downloaded.
I doubt that will work for the entire site, but site admin should have tools to change all image links on the site, with a similar search/replace function.

It's not that simple

Note: I'm an educated user, not associated with BC or any other site. I just read and write stuff here.

The 'cdn' in the URL indicates Content Delivery Network. What BC does, and a great many other sites do, is to contract with special providers when the volume of traffic becomes too large. In BC's case this is an outfit called Cloudflare.

To save overloading the BC servers, a lot of the content is cached on the way through on cdn servers nearer to you, so that the pages don't have to travel the entire network each time you ask for something.

Along the way they will rewrite the URL (yes, that's legal) to point to a local copy of whatever it was your browser asked for. Sometimes this is visible to you, sometimes not.

Very occasionally, when things run out of room or for some other reason, the cache gets flushed and stuff has to be fetched from the BC servers again. Sometimes the indexes that tell Cloudflare where everything is don't keep up. That is likely why you have seen what you have.

By the way: BC is run on servers provided by qnez, which is Joyce Melton's operating company. qnez also provides services for some of the other websites you can visit via the links at the top of the home page.
