Cleanup in Aisle 6…?

Printer-friendly version

Forums:

So…I noticed that there are…a lot of stray, empty threads hanging loose outside of sub-forums. Have they always been strewn about like this (or maybe just since an infrastructure upgrade and content migration,) or did something muck with the database recently…?

(Author's note: Later edited to clarify a couple of points.)

Huh?

Can't figure out what you are asking.

Further Clarification

Basically, are those orphaned forum topics slated for deletion or re-categorization? They've already had every thread and/or message moved out of them, after all, so they're just cluttering the main, top-level forum index up. The way things remain now, one has to scroll though a long list of irrelevant links just to get to an area of the forums that's actually still seeing use. (There are also a handful of threads that are small but not empty, but don't seem like they should be top-level, though they could get tidied up separately.)

"orphaned" forum topics

"orphaned" forum topics have not had replies removed, there never were any.

At the moment, there are no plans to tidy the area up; no one here has that kind of time. Sorry.

Re: "orphaned" forum topics

Ah, right. No problem; I can understand having a backlog of outstanding tasks to take care of.

They are not actually forum topics

The items that end up in the "Forum" list can come from free-format entries that authors can add at the bottom of fresh story posts. That's why some of them look crazy. These are supposed to just refer to the specific post, but because of the way that Drupal works they also get added to an index which ends up polluting that list of forum topics.

Basically, you should just ignore everything that has zero entries in it. Periodically, Piper used to go through and delete all the odd stuff but I'm not sure if that is even possible now; it would effectively be orphaning an entry which indexes back to somebody's post.

Those things are a pain, but until the elves have enough time to do anything about them, we are stuck with them.
