What makes you the person you are? If it's just your beliefs, abilities, and memories, can your mind be replaced without destroying you? Is there still a point in doing anything when machines are better at doing everything?

Kaleb Kardashev is determined to create a technological utopia, but President Stone just wants to preserve human dignity. What are they willing to sacrifice to achieve their vision of the future?

What if you could process more information in one second than most people can in a month? For starters, in one minute you would experience more subjective time than other people experience in five years. In fifteen minutes, you’d have thought more thoughts than most people have in a lifetime, just over 81 years’ worth to be precise.

What if I told you that’s just the power of augmenting the human mind? What if instead of augmenting a human mind we used the power of a small star? In one second, that Matrioshka Brain would have more ‘thoughts’ than even an augmented human would have in 75,000 years.

At these absurd limits what isn’t possible?

Sheathed in Silicon

Chapter Two

[Previous] - [Next]

The sky was nickel green even through the sepia, and the atmosphere overhead above seemed to boil. There was no sun to speak of, only the glow of LED's from a million different monoliths that made up the skyline. They dominated everything and were singularly brutal. Little care was given to aesthetics; this was entirely unlike the cities he remembered.
