What with everything in my life right now, there's no way I could take time to administer voting on the novel contest in a timely manner, therefore I'm extending the deadline to 11:59 p.m. PST, January 6, 2008 in the hope that things will be calmer and more predictable for me by then. Remember, I'm doing this for my convenience, not yours. :)

The final week of the How Novel Is It? contest has snuck up on us! So you've got just one week to finish your novel and post it to BC before the end of the contest!

I will now entertain the pleadings and arguments of people who aren't going to be ready in time. :)

Okay, you talked me into it! The contest deadline has been extended because I meant to put this notice up two weeks ago! The contest which was scheduled to end on December 2, 2007 has been extended to 11:59 p.m. PST, December 9, 2007. Circumstances may force me to grant a second extension due to problems in my own life but let's try to make this one.

Hugs,
Erin

Darn You Errinnnnn!

John says in his best Captain Kirk.

We will see. I've been making progress recently on Sgnt Joe/Conversion Tables-Zwei but I was discouarged I would get it too late to Holly or Janet or any of the other nice suffering people I use as medical, um literary test animals dang it, reader/proofers.

Maybe.

Krunch is in this catagory, right?

We're all doomed.

PS. What was the minimum word count required, fifty or seventy-five thousand? Or am I way off here?

40,000

Minimum word count was 40,000.

It -- could -- work!

I have 25000 and to even come close to completing and linking the two, well really three related stories will easily push past 40000.

But, but, but!!!

I'm not finished with Heroes of Justice yet! *sob!* It's not my fault *whine!* High Mistress of the Biggest Closet of them please have mercy! *whimper* It's longer than I thought it would be! Part 2's editing have had unexpected difficulties! There was this contest at StarDust! Parts 3 and the ending just need a little more polishing! *sobbing* Please! have Mercy Mighty Erin! *peeks to see if the story is being brought, but cringes at the toe-tapping loud in the dead silence from HER throne!*

Seriously *grins* I did try to have Heroes of Justice ready but fate decided to be unkind. Part 2 is being proofed by the generous Jamie Lou, but while parts 3 and 4 are complete they aren't finished. Three needs more attention on my part before proofing but four needs parts of the ending rewritten. This does not include any rewrites on the earlier parts to better meld with the eventual ending. Realistically I'm guessing maybe a month to get a finished product out. For all of those who has been asking about Heroes of Justice I will finish and post but unfortunately not in time for the contest. *Sigh*
On the other hand I will say it's been one heck of an learning experience. I was planning for 50K words but went wayyyy over that with about 106K words total. So good luck to whoever does finish their grand masterpieces in time!

Being Christina Chase may not qualify

So, Being Christina Chase is a 52 chapter novel. Assuming I keep up my pace, at the rate of posting one chapter a week, the end should arrive sometime in March 2008. That might take it out of the running for this if it's a hard rule that the story has to be complete.

That said, I've posted 226,558 words so far. The devious thing to do would be to break it up into 5.6 "complete" novels, translate them into Esperanto, and demand that people take me seriously.

Hey AK!

Uh, doesn't parts 1 and 2 of the above (especially part 2) kinda negate the demand in part 3? Unless you are Harry Harrison, that is.

Incomplete novels

erin's picture

Incomplete novels are okay for the contest, as long as the completed part fits the length requirement, it's just that they may be somewhat handicapped in the voting.

Okay, I submitted my latest...

...and it is surely over 40,000 words! Giggle, giggle.

It even has an ending! Honest, it's complete! Yes, I know, you're all shocked, stunned, speechless, and who ever would have THUNK IT! Angel completing a multi-part story!

Surprise, I did it, I honestly did it! Giggle, giggle.

Huggles all and good luck in the contest!

I have no idea

I have no idea of how many words of Runway have been posted. There are forty five chapters and all have been written but not edited. Samantha and I are trying to get it posted but if it doesn't get done, well like they say, ho hum. Good luck everyone, Arecee

There'll be a 2008 Novel contest, too.

Novel Deadline Extended

Thanks.

I'm sorry for your reasons for needing to do it, but I appreciate the extra time. There's a slight chance I'll have more than one story finished by then. (I have three works in progress and had trouble deciding which one to try to complete this weekend.)

Ack, foiled again!

I was gonna bail on this and post a teaser as an apology as I am having trouble linking two of the story lines together.

With this much extra time, jesse, there goes any excuse. And Scott posted part two of his epic so -- John goes outside and closes door behind him -- ...

-- ^*&^$@@^()*&^%%&*!!!!!!! --

I feel much better now.

Okay, PC it's you and me ...

John in Wauwatosa

John in Wauwatosa

Me too!

Me too Jennifer! It's too bad events has forced this but as you say I can use the extra time. I almost have Part 2 ready to post. The rest needs more work and perhaps extensive rewrites. The entire thing is nearly 120K words which is three times the required length. On the other hand it's only a fraction of Admiral Krunch's grand project still in the slips at the shipyard.

Erin may all your problems melt away and be replaced by holiday cheer!

How do I post it?

The Create fiction page says that a story with more than 20,000 words should be broken into chapters. I'm guessing that to do this I start by creating the book as a "Title page", and then make each chapter as a "Title page" also, but with the parent set to the book's title page - is that right? Then do I have to go back to the title page for the whole thing and paste in links to the URL's for the chapters, or does it do that automatically?

I'm trying to figure out how much post-production time I need to leave space for before the deadline.

Nope

erin's picture

Don't create the book as a title page and please don't create the chapters as title pages or child pages. A title page is just that, a title page. Usually Sephrena or I create them and link the chapters to them by using an outlining command. Chapters are just done the usual way.

But you don't have to break a long story into smaller parts, you can just go ahead and post it all in one piece. I think the phrase I used was "probably should" which does not mean "must." :) The rationale for breaking the story into smaller parts is to save download time for people on slow connections which is becoming less important all the time.

rename contest

Anyone else think that this contest should be renamed as the Gaby Bond memorial novel contest?

Okay so I missed it

I tried, I really did, but things just have been conspiring to keep me away from the keyboard. I promise I will have the final part of Princess of Trimaria soon, hopefully later today. Right now I gotta eat since I haven't left the computer for hours.

I'm not going to make it.

I've got four chapters left to finish and only two hours, and I'm still 4000 words short of the minimum. I don't think I'm going to make it under the wire. But in all likelihood I'll be posting a novella or short novel tomorrow.

Typo

Thank heaven for typos

Cool. I guess I'll make it after all. I'm at 37,660 words, but I guess I can go to bed now.

Thanks.

Made it

I did get 40K plus words of Heroes of Justice up and posted. Thanks to everyone who helped! Whew! Part 3 is completed and in pre-edit or reading what I just wrote and wondering if it makes any sense whatsoever! Okay I'll admit Catherine Linda has given it the once though. Part 4 needs work fixing those dangling plot threads and ironing out the wrinkles in the ending.
