Using Search

Printer-friendly version

I'm going to use this as a place to discuss search, how to use it and what people want to use it for.

A few things:

  • When you use multiple words in a search, the default is to perform an OR search. Searching for curly perm will turn up both curly and perm and will list first results that have both terms.
  • Searches are case insensitive. Perm, perm and PERM are all the same.
  • Searches are made for roots, so perm, perms, permed and perming are all the same. But permanent is a different word.
  • A plus symbol in front of a word in a search means that word is required so curly +perm will return only results that have some form of perm in them and will prefer ones that have curly, also. +curly +perm results must have both words though not necessarily next to each other.
  • A minus sign means do not include the following word in results so perm -curly would return results that matched perm but would not include ones that also had curly.
  • Quotes around a phrase will search for an exact match, but will still ignore case. "curly perm" will match Curly perm and lots of variations but both words in that order must be present.
  • Comments are regarded by search as part of the post.
  • The sidebars allow you to restrict searches to posts that match various criteria, like type of post, audience rating or authorship. At the top right is a sidebar that allows you to control how the search indexer orders results.

When we upgrade to Drupal 7, this will all change a bit but not drastically.

You can use this thread to ask questions and make comments about search.

Happy searching!

Simple to follow rules

I very rarely have need to use search but when I do it is good to be clear about how it works. The rules above are simple to understand and straightforward.

I just wish Google followed the same standards! It did a long time ago when it was still a search engine and not trying to take over the universe. Nowadays, type in more than one word and you are very lucky if the results resemble anything you asked for. Grrr!

Sidebars

I'm not sure if it's just happening to me ... but the sidebar which permits restricting searches seems to have gone AWOL some time in the last few weeks.

Is the problem server or client side?

Searching by kudos

Is there a way to search or filter by number of kudos? I have been reading here obsessively for almost two years , and am hoping for a way to find more clssics.

No

There's no way to search by number of kudos and that is deliberate. Kudos are intended to encourage the writers, not be a popularity contest.

Sorry.

Erin

= Give everyone the benefit of the doubt because certainty is a fragile thing that can be shattered by one overlooked fact.

Kudos counts

Kudos counts haven't been around all that long. Many of my older stories have no kudos because they were posted before the feature was implemented.

By definition, classics will have been around a lot longer than Kudos have.

How do you find classics, then? Sorry, but that's a much harder question to answer.

Looking for classics

Thank you for the quick response. I understand the point about avoiding misuse of kudos. I will try posting my list of favorites, and asking for additional recommendations. I haven't figured how messages work, other than to authors - to broadcast a message, do I just post it in 'my blog'? What about a making new forum entry, topic 'favorites and classics'?
